TakeTwo: we need a DS strategy and a Wii strategy

MarioColbert

CAGiversary!
If you are sitting there thinking "man, I sure hope that TakeTwo had not contacted Rockstar Games and 2K hoping to get a proper Wii Strategy" this post is going to bring you the worst news in a while.

From Take-Two F2Q07 Earnings Transcript:
To be perfectly frank, I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to realize what’s going on with Wii and DS. I will tell you that very quickly we turned to both 2K and to Rockstar and said guys, we need a DS strategy and a Wii strategy and we are working on it. As we get into the next quarter and into budget season for 2008, everybody in this company is completely focused on it.

Having said that, development cycles are long. Sports aren’t as good as games develop for specific platforms but we are looking at all of them across the board for Wii and DS. I will tell you that carnival games that we’ve announced for the Wii have gotten a lot of attention in the marketplace, as well as with our first-party partners. So we are pretty excited about that.

We have some -- some have been announced, some Wii titles have been announced and we are working to put more out on the Wii and DS.

Oh, SNAP.

You are going to start seeing this with a TON of companies who didn't think the Wii would be worth it.

It happened with the DS, it took a year or so to start getting the good games the good announcements, it'll happen with the Wii.

Why would you not want Rockstar to make games for the Wii? I gon't get it.

He's saying to all the anti-Wii people "your panties are already in a twist, prepare for me to unleash a torrent of piss on them and your face."

He's just not saying it in as cool of a way as I am.
So this means we'll probably get a port of all the PS2/PSP GTA games, right?
GTA: San Andreas Stories

I took the title to mean that TakeTwo was going to be making strategy games for the Wii and DS

Oh well, shouldn't have read it so quickly. Great news anyways.

By the way, where the hell are the RTS games. They are a perfect fit.

...we need a DS strategy and a Wii strategy...
Why is it that the first thing I thought of when I saw the title was "I need an old priest and a young priest"?

The power of Christ compels you!

That's my view on it as well. Wish I had learned from the DS and had waited a year to year and half to pick up my Wii though.

I don't because honestly we are at the point where I don't think we will see Wii's in stores until Spring/Summer of 2008.

This shortage is not ending anytime soon and then it will be Christmas season and they will be gone again.

Meh, I could have waited unil spring/summer 2008 for the handful of games that will be released before then that interest me.

But Metroid is too close for me to bother selling it now.

How about hack and slash / dungeon crawler games as well? Something like Baulder's gate would also be a perfect fit.

I think it'll be sort of a rise and fall thing. The companies are now on the rise, thinking, "Oh man, we made a mistake not developing on the Wii! Quick, make some games!"

And then, after the back lash from their crappy games (see: Ubisoft) they'll back down and either try and make better games or just give up and go elsewhere.

Exactly, too many developers underestimated how well the Wii was going to sell. Now that they are taking notice, perhaps we'll see some decent games at E3 after all.

By the way, Zack & Wiki looks fucking awesome.

Who didn't underestimate how well the Wii was going to sell? It's not like anyone realistically saw this coming.

People who understood that it WAS going to parallel the DS situation. Maybe not to this extent, however.

Dr Mario Kart already answered that question, the success of the DS should of been reason enough for developers to put in support for the Wii.

Yes, you can argue that "handhelds and consoles are different" but I really don't buy that, they compliment each other. No one is a handheld only gamer, at least I haven't met anyone that is yet.

Well, who knew there was a market for games beyond us...er, gamers?

Now to make a GTA that Grandma will want to play...

Damn, dude. Damn...

Ubi Soft seemed to predict this pretty accurately which is why they've got two of the five best selling games for the system.

Developing games for =/= predicting huge success for. Also weren't most of the games movie licenses? Which are on every other console?

Nope.

Rayman Raving Rabbids
Red Steel
Driver
Blazing Angels
Monster 4x4
GT Pro Series
Far Cry
Splinter Cell: Double Agent
Prince of Persia
Open Season
Surf's Up
TMNT

Out of their entire Wii lineup they have 3 licenses, only one of which was a launch title.

Yep, not mostly licensed games. But I agree they weren't predicting the success.

They're just a company that knows at launch you have hardcore early adopters that have a new toy they want to buy games for, and they have no qualms rushing out a bunch of crap to take advantage of the suckers.

maybe, but there was a quote from their president basically saying they hedged their bets on the Wii being a success. This was around launch time. Did they rush out crap? Sure, most of it, but I'll give them credit where credit is due, they were the only third party company that had faith in the Wii prior to its success.

As for Take-Two, they need a Wii strategy that doesn't include AO games.

I thought Take Two had a DS/Wii strategy, and it was to put out shit like MLB 2K7 or Top Spin 2 hoping people would associate the brand with a non-sucky game.

I do think Ubi Soft was predicting the Wii to be a success simply because of how many of those games were launch or launch window. They had seven of those games out long before the Wii was such a run away success.
