Taking the PS3 plunge.......but a little bit worried.....

vhgong

CAGiversary!
Ok.....i am on the verge of buying a PS3 and have few concerns which i need some opinion on.

1) Is the HDMI handshaking issue resolved in anyway?

2) Is overheating as issue?

3) Is controller issue(loosing signal) as bad as people described it to be?

Opinions?

1) no idea i use hdmi to dvi

2) system has bever frozen or became too hot. it does get hot

3) after beating resistence and playing other games for hours my sixaxis lost its signal twice

1) I have not had that issue at all. I just needed to configure my settings so the sound comes out through optical and not HDMI.

2) I have never had it lock or freeze up. This really is a well built machine.

3) Has never happened to me.

I've never had the HDMI issue, the only overheats I've ever heard of have been display models in those enclosed cases running 24/7, and my controller has only very rarely lost signal.

As has been said, it's a very well-built piece of equipment.

1) No issues with HDMI, like prior post I have the audio set through optical.
2) No issues with overheating. Left it on overnight on accident once and it was warm in the morning but nothing like my 360 after a good Gears session.
3) Only had one time in which the controller lost connection. It was frustrating...but not really frequent.

1) when I'm playing ps2 games on ps3, sometimes there's a hiccup issue during the loading screens. There's no issue w/ ps3 games. I really think it might be my

2) overheating hasn't been an issue

3) I've desynced about once or twice... but its pretty rare.. I've played oblivion for serveral long hours and I haven't had an issue.

1) No issue at all so far, seems to work well with my samsung LCD

2) I'll admit, it does get hot (can feel the heat) but it hasn't frozen/crashed once, and i had a grueling 8-12 hour play session of ffxii on saturday

3) Hasn't happened to me once

1) don't know

2) nope-- it gets hot but it's very well ventilated.

3) It does happen once every few sessions to me, but it doesn't bother me.

1) My HDMI works fine. I set up two different ways....went HDMI to TV, then optical out from TV to receiver. That seemed to work SOMETIMES. I just ran an optical cable direct from the PS3 to the receiver.

2) I keep mine ventilated, but I've probably only played 10 hours on my PS3 (watched a efw Blu-Ray also)

3) Never happened to me with controller or Blu-Ray remote.

This is exactly how I have mine setup. I haven't run into any problems with this configuration.

Guess I'll answer too.

1) No issues with HDMI. I think it's only with Westinghouse LCDs that there MIGHT be an issue if you have old TV firmware.

2) Have had my PS3 on 4 DAYS straight and it only gets warm. She's a beauty!

3) Happens a couple times during LONG play sessions. So it's annoying, but rarely happens, and only for a few seconds then it reconnects.

1. Never had any issues with HDMI

2. My console has never overheated.

3. Controller has not lost signal so far even during long play sessions.

1. Never had issues with HDMI
2. Console does get hot, but has never over heated.
3. Never happened to me at all, and I beat Resistance, probably put 10+ hours into Oblivion and some time playing flow, tekken and Motorstorm.

1. used component, but don't have issue with HDMI to DVI
2. it's hot, but not that bad, i wish i can play 8-10 hours straight, *sigh* those days are over for me...
3. Never happened to me... Connecting the remote is a no brainer and worked great. Love the controllers, no more wires and i can skip texts while doing quick errands in other rooms (multi-tasking, don't work well, but not the hardware/software's fault).

I'm just following the 1 2 3 thing...

1) No problems with HDMI at all. I use optical out to my receiver (why go to the t.v. then to the receiver? Seems like an extra cable you don't need.)
2) I've left it folding for a couple of weeks and it never got any hotter than any of my other computers. When it was enclosed in my entertainment center, it did get hot, but once I moved out next to my t.v., it's been fine
3) I *think* I lost a connection once during an online Resistance game. Other than that, I haven't had any problems.

[quote name='vhgong']Ok.....you've convinced me......now i go get one.....should i get the protection plan? >

I bought the plan at first, but once I realized Sony's warranty was already 1 year I went back to EB & got a refund on their warranty. Figured that $60 would be better spent on a game or something else useful. ;)

You might want to wait on the PS3
* There are rumors that a 80gb version might be coming out soon
* Your use may vary but I for example only use it about 2 minutes a week (and that time is spent cleaning the dust off of it)

Great game system if you like only having one good game. lol
I got nothing to play on it everyday since beating Resistance.
I cant wait till some great RPGs come this way. I got a PS2 years ago because of the RPGs and thats something I hope PS3 comes on strong with.

Has the game upscaling issue been resolved yet? Can I play Resistance and other 720p games in 1080i or will the PS3 downscale it to 480p? This is the ONLY thing holding me back from buying a PS3 (and the current lack of games but they are obviously coming eventually).

Also, many credit cards extend a manufacturer's warranty for another year so check your benefits.

Keep in mind that all consumer groups, magazines, etc., find extended plans to be a complete waste of money. Take it for what it's worth...

Oblivion is a great game. I've played about 20 hours and I'm like 2% finished with the game. Yes, I'm slow but it's such a beautiful game there's no reason to rush through it.

There are some great looking games on the horizon and if you don't already have a PS2, the PS3 is probably a good bet. If you've got a PS2, wait and play those games until a game comes out that you really want. Chances are, the system will be cheaper then.

not that you really need another echoed answer, but guess i'll add one more record to the book

1. use component through vga box to my monitor, so can't comment

2. only warm to hot, locked up maybe twice, but probably more due to software glitch than heating

3. happened maybe 3-4 times in 4 months of ownership, nothing to cry to mommy about

I am basically going to be using it as a Blu Ray player for now, so the pathetic number of games on it don't really bother me, its only a matter of time. Planet Earth is the main reason i am taking the plunge.

1. There are no HDMI issues for me, and I have used the same PS3 [mine] on three different HDTV [one crt tube, one rear projection, one plasma] and on all sets, the only "issue" is when you are loading a PSOne/PSTwo game, it might go blank for half a second, but this doesn't happen all the time, it's just shifting resolutions

2. Overheating an issue? Not at all, the PS3 blows a lot of hot air out the vent and seems like its hot, but if you actually feel the console its cool, and the fans are relatively quiet most the time, meaning the temperature sensor inside is saying everything is okay. I've had my PS3 on for two three blu-rays or and an hour of web browsing, and it's all good

3. No, it's not as bad as people describe it to be. Keep your controller well charged and it shouldn't happen often, keep it in range, and it shouldn't happen, when it does happen, all you need to do is press the PS button for half a second and it should reactivate quickly. In some games, it automatically pauses if your controller goes out

Don't be afraid, I can't make up my mind between my 360 or my PS3, mostly because I have about a dozen 360 games and only one PS3 game, but just the ability to play PSOne, PSTwo, downloads, web browsing, blu ray, and all the nice little features make it worth it.

The older games will not scale.

Some of the newer ones will, and anything coming out from here on out should as well.

Right, only if the games have "progressive scan mode" which you can activate via some game menu.

What? No no, he's talking about PS3 games that are 720p only.

Just as a side note, I believe all ps2 games played on the ps3 naturally scale to 480p

I run my ps3 through a vga box to my monitor to play in HD 720p (my monitor doesn't support 1080i/p), and the vga box only supports progressive scan modes, so 480i is very messed up. I tested this with the system's display test by unchecking all of the progressive modes and left only the 480i mode, and it is definitely messed up. However, since the ps2 games I put in all work, I can only assume that the system itself is upscaling all games to play at 480p without the need for the press+hold this and that at bootup or activating any options within the games that have them..

Zone of the enders 1 is the oldest game I have and it works as well, so I'm not sure what an "old" game is. ZoE should be pretty danged old.

Either way though, ps2 games look like crap on my monitor since it's basically like looking at a 640x480 resolution picture and stretching it to fit the screen which is 1600x1200 native.

Just bought a PS3 with Oblivion.......that should last me for a while till something decent comes along....i hope. Thanks for the advice guys. :)
