US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has urged military commanders to speed up their inquiry into claims that their troops burned Taleban corpses.



He said the longer it took to verify the allegations, the more harm it would do to the country's image abroad.

The probe was launched after soldiers were filmed allegedly desecrating two bodies and then taunting locals.

Mr Rumsfeld recalled the anger caused by past claims that Korans were defiled by guards at the Guantanamo Bay prison.

'Harmful'

"The reality is that charges of that type are harmful," said the defence secretary, who was in Vilnius, Lithuania, for a Nato meeting.
"It's particularly disappointing when they're true. That needs to be determined, but one hates to see the adverse effect of it, if it is true.



"We also recognise the damage that can be done by the allegations alone, if they're not true."

But he said the alleged actions were not representative of the overwhelming majority of US servicemen and the positive contributions they have made.

Correspondents said the reaction in Afghanistan was muted so far but there were concerns the claims could spark off violent anti-US protests.

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai said he was shocked by the report and called for a thorough inquiry.

The footage, captured by Australian TV channel SBS, purports to show the corpses of two Taleban fighters laid out facing Mecca and then being set alight.

The act of burning corpses is considered a sacrilege by Islam.

The soldiers initially said they were burning the bodies for hygiene reasons, the programme reports.

Later footage shows two US soldiers reading from a notebook messages which they said had already been broadcast to villagers.

"Attention Taleban you are cowardly dogs," the message reads. "You allowed your fighters to be laid down facing West and burnt.

"You are too scared to retrieve their bodies. This just proves you are the lady boys we always believed you to be."
There were widespread demonstrations in May throughout the Muslim world following reports that US forces had desecrated the Koran at the Guantanamo Bay military camp.

Well, that's one more high ground we lost. We used to say that at least we didn't desecrate corpses, can't say that anymore. Well at least we can say we don't decapitate prisoners, that is until videos of that are released.
 
well, this certainly is a battle of perspective. I don't find burning a corpse (especially if it's for hygeine reasons) to be particularly offensive or desecrating (is there an adjective version of desecrate?). At this point, I think this just people bitching just to bitch (sort of like the Chinese and Korean protests of Koizumi visiting the War Shrine).

They intentionally desecrated bodies and used corpses as a weapon. The article you posted doesn't change that.

And I don't think you understand why the chinese and koreans are so upset. Imagine if germany never really acknowledged and apologized for their atrocities, and when they did it was half hearted. And then, on top of that, a german prime minister visiting a war shrine that housed himmler, mengelef and other war criminals. That's the issue. Not because Koizumi is honouring the japanese killed in war, it's because he's honouring them at a temple housing war criminals.

They intentionally burned the corpses. Whether burning them is a desecration is entirely a matter of perspective. The article I posted at least said that they burned them because they were stinking (rotting).

However, I continually have less and less sympathy for Muslims as the cry foul on everything non Muslims do that they deem unholy, desecration or sacrilege.

I would say burning bodies for hygiene reasons is okay, but if this part is true, then it wasn't just for hygiene reasons. Kind of sick really.

The article you posted then said they were used essentially used as a weapon against militants. While there was a reason for burning, they burned them in a sacriligeous way, and they were conscious of promoting that fact.

But seriously, come on. If they burn our dead christian soldiers, in a particularly sacriligeous way (I can't think of an equivalent, since christians don't have very strict burial procedures), you don't think people are going to get upset? There was a big outcry when they burned americans and paraded them around. And we are supposedly on an entirely different moral plane. This isn't a case of revealing attire, this is the desecration of corpses. That is a universaly denounced, and illegal, practice. That is not some oversensitive "everything needs to be my way" reaction.

Trust me when I say you don't want to be around dead bodies that have been in the open air 48 hours. They're better off cremated. If a psychological warfare aspect can be attached to the sanitation and health benefits of such action, so be it.

Well, the psychological warfare part isn't beneficial here. It's not like the taleban are that popular there, but when you do things like this you weaken relations with the locals and others who hear the story. It's a very short sighted tactic that will only make things worse in the long run.

Though I know it's a bit old, but rumsfeld basically echoed the same opinion I have here, at least on the effect it can have, and that's what made me post it now. At the same time, it doesn't appear like everyone else here has heard about it.

How would you feel if white christian American bodies were treated this way by the Muslim insurgency?

You're dealing with the most racist, bigoted, illogical people on the Earth. If you're not a devout Muslim they wish to kill you and who knows how and what they'll do with your body afterwards.

as PAD already said, they have already done this. But, they went beyond a simple cremation. They mutilated them, draged them around attached to a truck and hung them up. I don't even care if they were christian. Burning them is one thing, but the kinds of crap they do is merely a spectacle meant to please them (and judging by the crowd I saw in the video clips, it seemed quite palateable to them).

We turned the corpses into a weapon to use against militants, both sides have desecrated bodies. That was a point I made in the original post. You also forget that whole event with the burned u.s. soldier was found to be organized, it wasn't a regular crowd of ordinary people.

The US soldiers got on loudspeakers and taunted them. The US soldiers buried them the wrong way (not a big deal to many of us, but apparently it's a muslim tradition)

PAD sounds like he wouldn't mind hanging them from an overpass. I don't see how he can denounce the extreme and degrading tactics of Islamic radicals, yet endorse US troops who use the same tactics. Increasingly there are no good guys, it's why we should have never started the war in the first place.
