Celebrating the franchise's 25th anniversary, publisher Ubisoft announced a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fighting game for Wii, scheduled to release in fall 2009.

The game, not yet given an official title, will feature a variety of series characters and locations in four-player battles. While TMNT is specifically designed for the Wii Remote and Nunchuk and will allow for limited motion controls, players will also be able to use the Remote by itself to play.

Ubisoft hasn't yet revealed what online features the game will offer, but producer Chris Ferriter promised a "very robust online multiplayer mode" in the January 2009 issue of Nintendo Power.

With the help of several former Team Ninja members (Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive series), Game Arts, one of the studios that contributed to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, will develop the title. Its previous projects also include releases for the Grandia and Lunar series.

This will be the third TMNT fighting game to be released, following Konami's TMNT: Tournament Fighters for SNES, Genesis, and NES in the early 90s,and TMNT: Mutant Melee for GameCube, Xbox, and PC in 2005.

"There is no better tribute to the Turtles than the creation of a brand-new game that will help to launch the next 25 years of success," says Ubisoft's SVP of Sales and Marketing Tony Key. "It's our pleasure to partner again with [Turtles creator] Mirage [Studios] as part of the worldwide birthday celebration for the Turtles."
So... do we still hate Ubisoft? I'm a little out of the loop.

I loved TMNT Tournament Fighters on the SNES. I remember being disappointed to learn that each system had an exclusive character (NES with Triceradon! I think Genesis had April, meh.)

If this game can be a decent SSBB clone then I'd really be up for it. Being a celebration of the 25th anniversary, I anticipate lots of classic characters. I could care less about the current version of the show.

It has quite a few things going for it that could counter-act the Ubisoft factor:
- Developed by people with experience in the genre (Former Team Ninja/Super Smash Bros. Brawl devs)
- Not tied to any specific movie or event, so there's less of a chance of it being rushed out the door unfinished.
- Based on a comic license that has been around for a long time (More creative freedom with the universe; remember the Spider-man PS1 game?).

I was very upset about the characters at the time too as I only had a Genesis.

I'd actually prefer this be more of a Tekken style game since I have never been able to get into SSB. Did I miss something (other than the thread title) that indicated that this would be a Brawl-style game?

At least two big details point to this:

1) Former members of the Brawl team are working on it
2) Screenshots show it set up exactly like Brawl - camera pulled out far on the side, 3D characters on a 2D plane, interaction with the environment, etc

It'll be a Brawl clone most definitely. Maybe the control scheme will be different, but I guess we'll find out in due time.

While GameArts does own the license to Lunar, the closure of Studio Alex really killed any hope for the series. That and Dragon Song probably killed it again. So its undead now.

Its not something I would dwell on.
fuck Gamearts for making a fighting game instead of Lunar 3.
In addition to what DMK said, I don't think anyone has been expecting Lunar 3 this late in the game, especially after the portable disasters.

Wingnut and Screwloose were a favorite of mine and I was amazed that they made it into TMNT:TF back in the day. If they returned that would be great.

Alternate costumes would be awesome as well. Black costume Raphael, trench coat turtles, original comic, cartoon versions would all be welcome.

Mm, no. One foot is tilted due to the incline, and the other foot looks like it's blocked in the current camera view by his leg.

After Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip, I've upgraded to "cautiously optimistic" for Ubisoft at this point.

Yeah, the trailer's lack of in game footage and emphasis on "made by smash bros. people" sounded off a few alarms.

Really though, I just want a good playable roster. And for Rat Kiing to be a pro wrestler like he was in tournament fighters. Rat Bomber FTW.

Okay, so in the first picture, the floor of the level is breaking, and the turtles will fall onto another floor or basement or something. Sort of like Brawl! It also looks like the Turtles are using their final smshes or something.

What I notice in the video is that the battle seems to be all on a flat platform. Is that just badly chosen clips, or is that what the game is like?

great game. been playing it for the last couple of days. Although the controls are simpler than Brawl, this is a lot more quickly paced.

IGN gave it a 7. Saying it was like Smash Brothers, but with turtle characters. They also said it wasn't as good, but I figured that. I still want to try it out though. Anyone buy or rent it? Also how is the online?

Online's pretty good. Much better netcode than Smash, of course.
I really dig the game. Some of the missions are annoying as heck though.

Is there any significant difference between this and the PS2 version? I'm going to pick it up, but if there's no difference, I'll probably go with the PS2.

SuperPhillip, have you ever played TMNT: Mutant Melee for the gamecube? I was reading your review and while you kept comparing it to Super Smash Bros, Smash Up seems to be nothing more than an updated version of Mutant Melee. The controls you described (stronger melee attack as the alternate attack) are the same from Mutant Melee and the items idea was also in Mutant Melee.

If you've played Mutant Melee, I'd rather have a comparison with that as I enjoyed Mutant Melee and don't particularly care for SSBB or Super Smash Bros Melee.
