I played Suikoden 1 way back in the day, and enjoyed it a lot. I recently tried V, but the game was stupidly easy and so so slow. I gave up 20 hours in.

How are 3 and 4? I've heard that 4 is pretty mediocre, but people seem to either hate or love 3.

Are these games as easy as 5? Are the stars as much of a pain to collect as in 5?

General comments appreciated.

Just so you know, Suikoden is a lot easier than Suikoden V. I'm not saying Suikoden V is hard, but it does get a little more difficult, and I think it has the hardest 108 stars to get naturally without a guide. Anyway, Suikoden III is great, with a lot to do and what I think to be the longest Suikoden. Also, it's the easiest one to do without help since you can do everything at the end without a time limit. Suikoden IV is easy, but like V, it has a few easy-to-miss stars. I agree that IV is the worst, but I don't hate it. It's pretty much what everyone says ... disappointing.

I think I'm one of the few who prefer IV over III.

The cons:

III has the "Trinity system," in which there are three main characters and the first half of the story is told three times through each one's perspective. And then a fourth character's. As a result, there's no central character that the people look to for leadership, or that you identify with(which is ok, except then it doesn't really feel like Suikoden anymore). Oh, and the castle never really transforms from a wreck to a your home(especially as you're kinda renting it from the fourth character). You also have to hoof your way around most of the continent.

IV suffered from a very large world that is only navigated by a very slow, awkward sailing process, and a main character whose polygon model looks retarded. (His character art is fine though)

The pros:

III has a kickass anime intro, and the characters are all reasonably cool.

IV castle-ship rocks, and Kika is hot. Also, its save-data loads in Tactics, which leads to some nice character development and conversations. Also, the slow-ass sailing is somewhat negated by the fast-forward button(R2), which can also be applied to regular field movement.

While Suikoden 1 wasn't hard, the frequency of battles in 5, along with battles that can be completed with auto battle, make the whole thing frustrating and useless.

I got through chapter 1 for the 3 characters and got bored soon afterwards. So far I have to agree that the anime intro was the best part of the game.

If you have the patience to get through a slow beginning, then I strongly recommend III. Especially since you loved I.

Have to disagree with that, or at least in part. It depends on what part of I you liked.

For me, Suikoden was always about having a central figure who you are, what amounts to MY army, and a spiffy HQ.

In that aspect, III disappoints because there is no central figure, the army is split between three people, and HQ is a rundown castle that NEVER looks any better. There are HOLES in the walls that are never patched, and the paintings I put up to cover them only slightly do the job.

The first part of V is supposed to be easy because Queen's Knights escort you wherever you go. However, V is by far the hardest Suikoden to gather all the Stars of Destiny in.

Yeah and I believe I just missed Cornelio by simply being too far, and by too far being at the Beaver village. It seems like if you don't grab some people at the first chance you will miss them. Theres also alot of annoying walking to do to get alot of people, and I would find it impossible for anyone to get all 108 stars without a guide. IV wasn't too bad outside if getting everyone too late into the game you actually miss the final star, which I did. Sucked.
