Terry Funk's wrestling topic

As voted upon in the Cyber Sunday mini-thread:

One of the craziest men to ever step in the ring, and yet he never seems to get the credit he deserves in Connecticut.

Bios:

Along with Mick Foley and Abdullah, Funk has got to be one of the most sadistic men to ever step into a wrestling ring. Sadly, by the time this style of wrestling became popular to Vince McMahon, Funk was already in his 50s.

I'm sure we can all remember the silly Chainsaw Charlie gimmick; and while that led to Funk's second appearance at WM, the angle merely served as a way to continue pushing Foley.

Perhaps the reason Funk has yet to receive the accolades he deserves from the WWE is because he has never really spent much time there consecutively. I'm not sure exactly how many times Funk has appeared in the WWE, I know he was main eventing for a short period of time in the mid-80s (his other WM appearance), but in the end, Funk's wanderlust saw him moving on to another company again.

Funk should be in the WWE hall of fame, IMO, the man has wrestled in 5 decades, held gold in the NWA, WCW, WWE, and the ECW world title, a once prestigious belt that he first won at the tender age of 49!

Terry Funk is one of the few legends who has constantly reinvented himself throughout the years -- and, defying logic, got better with time.

He's given so much to the art of wrestling and has always been willing to pass the torch.

I remember Terry Funk and Chris Candido had a match for the ECW title. It was kind of hard to believe that the Funker kicked out of 3 or 4 consecutive piledrivers.

A Terry Funk dvd documenting his life would be excellent. Plus with the recent listings for the Rey and HBK dvds, and Vince buying almost everyone's tape library, I'm to believe the match selection would be superb.

From the last thread:
seriously, whats up with having a non title match after your brand's title matchup (that ends in a DQ no less!). They might as well change the name of Monday Night RAW to "The HHH Show: featuring other guys too".

It's not like Umaga is going to do anything but job to HHH for 10 minutes tops, taking no less than two sledgehammer shots, and at least one JR "BAH GAWD!"
No joke, I was thinking the same thing a moment ago, chuckling to myself envisioning a 1970's style variety program called "The Triple H Show," complete with sequined backdrop stating the show's name, in addition to special guests The Bay City Rollers and Bea Arthur.

But who else is the show going to be around? Orton? HBK? Kennedy? It seems like RAW is just dead. They don't have anyone really worth watching at the moment.

His book's pretty good. Random as hell but as long as you can imagine the old Funkster sitting in a rocking chair rambling on, it's good.
stunner!!
Ya on me, my beloved stream has died! Was there one on Santino as well? I wanted to see that

Nope. Didn't happen.

Put Vince on drums for the show's house band and have those akward Conan O'brien/Max Weinberg akward stare moments that end in HHH shouting "Shut up Vince! You love COCKS!" and I'd probably watch it.
santino? what the hell does he have to do with the main even lol..
C'mon, Captain Erudite! Santino's constant shitbagging on "The Condemned" seemed ripe for him getting a stunner, and a brief sketch at CS seemed to be the ideal moment.

So, when your entire post consists of "Stunner!" don't be surprised if people don't know what the hell that means, or who it happened to.

Not to nitpick Zen Legend but Funk was 52 when he won the ECW World Title. If anything that makes it more impressive. I only remember because when he defended it against Sabu in "Born to be Wired", I distinctly remember Joey Styles saying something about how Terry Funk, at age 53, should not be wrapped in barbed wire.

The brutality of that match is pretty much unparalleled. When I finally got around to seeing it I had seen all manner of FMW/Big Japan deathmatches so I figured, "Meh, just barbed wire, no biggie." Wrong.
Really?
I just wanted to pronounce their names like Regal does. :]

Fair enough. Something about "Umaynga" makes it look like it should be a useful synonym for a particular female part.

Oh, but nitpicking is fun... Funk's first ECW world title reign was in '93, when he beat Sabu.
Who won? Umaynga or Triple Heytch?

I would actually give Umaga a 0.0001% of winning by DQ. You know, had there been a match choice where a DQ finish was even possible.

So, does anyone want to give a very quick results of what happened?

Rey over Finlay in a stretcher match
Matt Hardy is out injured
CM Punk over... The Miz, why...?
Kennedy over Jeff Hardy
Kane over MVP by DQ
HBK/Orton another DQ
Just noticed 10:30PM came and went with zero fanfare. Huh.
What was supposed to go down? Y2J coming back?

Jericho seems to be coming back tomorrow. Be interesting to see how that impacts Ratings... if much at all. WWE may have sunk so far at this point that it's going to take a lot more than Jericho coming back to right the ship again.

Ah, nevermind then. I didn't realize you were counting the Eastern Championship Wrestling title as the same thing.

EDIT - fuck you Batista. You suck. Then again, I don't know if UT is 100% yet. I don't want him to get basically stripped of the title again.

Wouldn't it be MitB if Jericho came out and blasted the terrible booking?

You don't see that "shoot" shit anymore...

Was KK Vs Hardy for the IC strap?

Sucks that Matt's out, just as he was finally gaing steam as a singles guy (after years and years of struggling to get out of Jeff's shadow).

AND THE CROWD GOES . . . dead fucking silent.

Non-title, and Matt looked to be out because of that huge gash on his face. This Matt/MVP storyline has been one of the few bright spots in wrestling. I'd like to see that feud end with a WM24 match, maybe even for all 3 belts (both tag and the US title) at stake.

Any socal cag's going to the L.A. comic convention next sunday? Rvd will there signing autographs.. I'll stop by if I get a chance. Maybe I'll ask him if he is still 420 friendly..lol
