The consolidated 'zomg Gamestop sucks' thread(post all your GS horror stories here)

OK. Since I am usually one of the most vocal GS critics on here(except when their trade promos benefit me:D), I figured I would create a consolidated Gamestop blows/sucks/etc/etc thread to try and cut down on the clutter of having everyone making a new thread like this every other day.

So, what's your Gamestop 'horror story'? Share it here.

Be it how you can't believe that they sell 'newsed' games(aka open copies of new games) or their shitty trade values or whatever you wanna gripe about.

Do we really need one of these? There's so many different kind of things to talk about when it comes to Gamestop, I'm not so sure I really want to restrict it to just one thread :D

I guess I will start this off.

So, about 3-4 months ago, my 360 broke, and I was in the market for a new one. I had $120 in cash and $80 something in GS credit, so I was stuck with buying it there. I was just going to get an arcade, as I had all of the other crap already.

So, next day, I call the closest GS, 30 MINS AWAY from me, and ask politely if they had any 360 arcades. The guy on the phone immediately acts like I'm wasting his time, and does one of those, "Ugghhh, I actually have to help you?" voices when he says, "Hold on, I'll go check." I was on the phone for 10 mins when he finally comes on and says that they do and he'll hold it for me til the next day.

I walk in the next day, and ask if I could pick up my 360 arcade. The manager looks around and goes, 'Sure, here it is. 60GB Hard drive and all".

Wait, what was that? I looked at him with a blank stare and said, "When did arcades start coming with hard drives?"

"They don't."

"Okay? So where is the arcade I asked for? The kid said he would hold it for me."

"What kid?"

"I think his name was ________."

"Let me ask him about it."

A few minutes later, the manager comes out of the back with the other guy, and walks over to the counter. He started telling me that the kid did what I said, and I said no. Then the kid I talked to chimes in and says, "Oh, you wanted an arcade! My bad."

I said it wasn't that big of a deal, and asked if I could pick up an arcade, as I didn't have enough cash for a pro. THe manager said sure, and started to look for one, then he turned around and said, "Sorry, we're out."

"So you're telling me that I drove 30 FREAKING MINUTES because this kid screwed up?"

"I'm afraid so. We can call you when we get some more, though."

"Oh, thanks. Are you also going to pay for the gas I spent getting here?"

At this point, he started getting all defensive, and I just walked out. Needless to say, it was the worst hour and a half of my life.
I already made one: here
O yeah, I remember that one now. But isnt this the problem with official rant threads. People don't remember to post in the thread anyways since, well, its not like posting a similar deal in a video game thread. If I was a person that wanted to post about my GS happenings, I don't want it to get cluttered and lost amongst the complaints of others. Just not as fun if its all consolidated into one thread where your story will get lost easily with others stories.
Only problem with your thread, darkslime, is that it hasn't been used in 7 months now.
How long until this one will go into hiatus and won't be used for a long time. Who knows. ;P

Wow. Thirty minutes to a Gamestop store? I have about four of them within an easy 10 minute or so drive.

I flipped a bunch of stuff back and forth from a few stores and craigslist (total $50 initial investment) and got $600 credit. I bought and sold more games from gamestop, stayed at $550 credit and made about $350 cash.

I bought creed 2 LE, dragon age LE, demons souls LE, mw2, rainbow 6 vegas 2, fable 2 le, tales of vesperia, and a ton of other games and now have $0 credit and a nice game library. The end.

Oh wait, this was a thread made to complain about gamestop.

Uh, one time the manager at one of my local gamestop couldn't remember my name for like 5 minutes. It was horrible.

That's awful! You should get him fired for that lack of customer service!

I've never been to a "zomg gamestop" before since I don't live in Germany, but if they're anything like the gamestops here in America I think I can help. Many of you can just paste the following for any gaming-related grievances you feel so incredibly compelled to share:

"So get this. One time, I go to (game retailer), so I can (menial task). I approach the clerk at the counter and then outta nowhere (stupid incident)! So the clerk responds by (exaggerated rebuttal), what an idiot! Needless to say I was (negative emotion) and I told the clerk (sharp poignant response)... of course that didn't quite happen and in reality I just mumbled and walked away but the point remains.

After consolidating with (internet browser) I was told I could sue them for what happened to me. Luckily for them I'm (positive quality) so the whole thing is below me, except for when I want to bother everyone on the internet about it. Moral of the story: I'll never (verb) at (game retailer) again!"

My friend had a ZOMG awesome moment. He recently started working at a GS and yesterday a woman came in to trade a who bunch of games and consoles. The PSP she came to trade-in had no serial number, so the store couldn't take it. My friend, who was ringing it up, told her this and she told him he could just keep the system for free. I've played the system, and there is nothing wrong with it except no serial number. I hate my friend right now.

Not really a horror story, but how could GS have pre-order bonuses for R&C: ACiT and not Tekken 6 on release day?

I was usin' the last of my store credit to pick up both last month. Dude gave me the R&C bonus, but not the Tekken one. I asked about it and he made up some bullshit excuse about not bein' able to go through the boxes yet to look for them. He said to call the store later and they should have them.

The truth was, they didn't have the shit. When I got home I noticed that various GS stores mentioned by other ppl online didn't have them either, but they did have R&C bonuses. I heard the calendar was shitty anyway and managed to snag a Yoshimitsu DLC code thanks to ppl who had extra, so I still came out pretty good.

I called GS headquarters or w/e and told them what happened the same day though. Long story short, the lady got my info and said she would send me a form I could fill out to get my DLC code. As far as the calendar, I would have to keep in contact with the store for that.

Well, the form never came and I wasn't about to spend more carfare to go back to GS for a calendar they should have had on the mornin' of release.

I'm so glad I finished usin' up my store credit. A big fuck you to LameStop.

gamestop suck ass - every time i'm in there I get some snobby kid behind the counter trying to impress me with his video game knowledge. And i always get screwed when i try and sell games back.

now i either use TinFlip or Goozex

Amazon works too at time, but i haven't tried reselling games with them yet

saw this yesterday while i was picking up some games for the b2g1. since it was early, there was only 1 person there and while he was looking for the games i took a quick snapshot.

My most horrible GS story is the time I bought Monopoly for Wii, only to get it home to find it fucking scratched (It was new, aka gutted), would only play a few minutes before it froze, well the 3 stores around here didn't get any copies in for well over a month, so I was fucked $40 on it, wound up keeping the case, tossed the manual & game in the trash.

But the good news is is that GS saves me money by having me shop elsewhere for games/accessories. :)

OH yeah, our GS changed their policy that prevents people from returning USED Games, so I don't buy used games anymore either.

i went to buy 3 game on Wednesday for the b2g1f sale, before i left i made sure the guy put in the disc and everythign in the cases, and what did you know the guy forgot to put the disc in the case, so i said can i get the game please?, he said oh sorry about that and he put the game in the case.

that s my "Horror" Story.
That's why southern WI BLOWS.......HARD!
The closest one in NE Wisconsin is about 45 minutes away, in Green Bay... And there's no way I'd drive that far JUST for Gamestop. fuck that.
How can they change the policy, it is nationwide. Perhaps you just had a jerkass employee making stuff up.
Their "official" reason behind it was people were apparently "abusing" the system by getting free game rentals  It was put into place few years back actually, before the :360::wii::ps3: systems arrived.

Why didn't you return it? Raise hell with the manager, DM, and corporate? Anything? If you buy new, even gutted, they can't give you used shit, and that was obviously used.

As a concerned bystander, I have to wonder if the human mind can recover from that kind of psychological scarring. Out of stock, you say?

Check the receipt, they all have the return policy printed right on it. I am looking at it right now. An opened game can be exchanged for same and if it isn't they will give you credit.

What about new accessories? If you were to buy a new Wireless 360 Mic, but it didn't work, would you get a refund, or just another Mic?

Why didn't you return it? I did try to return it, but they were out of new copies, had USED ones though.

Raise hell with the manager? Manager is a total asshole, he doesn't like me.

DM, and corporate? Corporate is fucking worthless, they pretty much take the stores side, won't investigate anything.

Anything? If you buy new, even gutted, they can't give you used shit, and that was obviously used. That, or some employee took it home to play (happened another time with Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, vanished during a BOGO sale, then "magically" reappeared after the sale  )

Corporate is actually really good, they get things done if you complain to them. Also, even if you took a used copy, wouldnt that have been better than just throwing the game away?
Corporate is actually really good, they get things done if you complain to them. Also, even if you took a used copy, wouldnt that have been better than just throwing the game away?
I would have settled for anything, as long as it worked, wasn't scratched to hell, etc.

If they don't have a new copy as a replacement, at the very least they have to give you store credit for the return; it is their fault that they sold you a used copy as new. And even if the manager is an asshole, DMs or corporate will usually step up. Gamestop has lost class action lawsuits in the past for selling used (mostly from employee use or improper returns) as new and they do not want to face further lawsuits. They take that stuff seriously so if you report it in a timely manner they'll usually offer a refund, and from what I understand with enough complaints they'll actually investigate the store. If you don't take it to the next step, nothing will ever happen.

I don't side with Gamestop, especially in cases like this, but if you let asshole employees and managers walk all over you they will. My advice is to never take a gutted new or used game without looking at it yourself, and then double-check it after the transaction is complete; I've had employees find me a pristine used copy and then swap it with a dirty scratched one during the transaction. It's up to you to control such situations.

Definitely should have called corporate. Sorry, but no corporate offices of any kind of big retailer are worthless. They are an extremely, extremely reactionary lot. If you have any kind of legitimate complaint, they will generally come down pretty hard on the employees. I've only worked in retail for a brief time in my life, but I knew plenty of others that worked for quite some time, and the last thing you wanna hear from an angry customer is that they are gonna contact corporate.

As Guerrilla pointed out, just sounded like dumbass and/or rude store employees, which can be found anywhere. If they couldn't get you a new copy, they should have given you store credit.

Well I was able to trade in house of the dead overkill towards NSMB even though on the website it said it is no longer eligible. Although it was still on the list. I guess i got lucky?
gamestop rules, game crazy is getting better though

Is this a joke account? Every comment I've seen from you thus far has been reactionary and hasn't added much of anything to any thread.

Then again, that could be said of my interjections fairly often too.:D

Just had a ridiculous experience at GameStop and thought of this thread. Needed a couple of extra bucks so I went to trade in some games. I hand the guy the games and he asks for my ID like they always do.

Guy: I'm sorry it looks like your ID is expired.

Me: Oh yeah, probably.

Guy: Sorry I can't take these. (Hands me the games back)

LOL, wut? Yeah, my ID is expired, but who cares? I didn't even know they looked at the expiration date, it's been expired for a while apparently, and no one else has ever said anything about it. And if you're wondering why I don't renew it, first because it would cost more than I would be getting from the games, and secondly because the only time anyone ever asks for my ID is when I'm trading stuff in to GameStop. I guess I've got to see if I can get a ride to a different GameStop now.

don't you know that gamestop employees makes up policies on the fly? they're talented. just like supercoolguy
Why didn't you at least resurface the game instead of throwing it out?
Because I thought buying new meant getting a new, sealed copy, not some fucking gutted copy, I shouldn't have to have a game resurfaced that was purchased under the "NEW" label.

But to answer your question, I tossed it because I didn't want to deal with those mother fuckers anymore.

So you'd rather lose money? Or have no game at all? This really doesn't make sense. :whistle2:s

It was a way of saying "fuck you" to the whole situation. Sure, there are probably better ways of dealing with it, but at the time, it probably seemed justified.

If she were to return it though then Gamestop would have lost out. As it stands Gamestop got the money and had no penalty in the end. Way to stick it to them.

Could I have handled the situation better? Absolutely, but I was just so fucking mad that I did not want to return to be hassled by the fucking manager, not at one but 2 different Game-Stops.

Could I have called Corporate & gotten them to breath down the stores neck? Again, Absolutely, but I didn't have much luck with them in the past.

Could I have returned it for store credit or full refund? Dunno, managers pretty much typical Drone that won't budge when it comes to dealing with returns/exchanges.

Point is, what's done is done, I do have regrets but fretting over it will not undo the damage, I just choose not to deal with them anymore, I could have been shafted out much more money but I just chocked it up to one really bad experience.

You should've gone right back to the store that sold you the shitty, scratched up game and told them you wanted a different copy. If they tried to refuse the return, then you should've called the customer service line from your cell phone right in the store.

There's no way in hell I'd ever take that level of shit from a Gamestop. Even on the rare occasions I have taken a gutted 'new' copy, I've inspected that shit before I ever left the store.

If both corporate and the store manager(s) decided not to budge, then I would've asked for the district managers number on the spot. If they refused to give it to you in that store, then I'm sure someone in one of the umpteen Gamestop stores around would have.

You can't just give up and let these fuckin' idiots get away with this type of shit. The more people who do allow this to happen, the more the GS employees(and corporate) will feel they can get away with.

Not everyone hacks up their old IDs, so it could be stolen- or the info is out of date so you can use a different ID later and keep 'bad trade-ins' going.

Most places don't care if it's a few days, or even a few weeks, expired- but you will hit a point where no place that needs ID will take yours anymore becuase it's expired... sounds like you're getting to that point. Worry about your trade-in later, go get your ID renewed first before it really gets to be a hassle.

Eh, no one else ever said anything about the expiration date. And I did go to a different GameStop later on and trade the games in no problem.
