The Legendary Starfy - 8.9 on IGN

Yeah, I saw this title in the giant list of release dates, and I couldn't remember if we had heard about it before or not. I'm glad one is finally coming to America.

Yeah I just saw this on Kotaku.

Which one is it gonna be???

I hope they don't just re-brand "Densetsu No Stafy 4" on DS as the first one because it's garbage compared to the first 3 on GBA.
That being said, it's still a pretty decent game and I just finished it with 100% completion last month....d'oh!

I'm wondering if I should keep playing the 5th one or just wait for a US release now... :X

From what the description on the Nintendo site says, it sounds like they're bringing over the second DS game, "Densetsu no Stafy: Taiketsu! Dire Kaizokudan," since the description mentions Starfy helping a "mysterious bunny-eared visitor," and a rabbit astronaut character is a part of the second DS game.

In The Legendary Starfy™ game, which launches June 8, players dive into a spectacular undersea adventure with Starfy, the legendary hero of Pufftop. Players swoop into enemies like a shooting star, glide over bottomless chasms and transform into powerful creatures to help a mysterious, bunny-eared visitor find his lost memory.

Yeah it's safe to say. Though I thought his name was gonna be Stafy since that is what they called him in Brawl. Then again...Starfy makes more sense in English since he is a Starfish...=s

Oh wow, good find.
I just started playing the 5th one so I guess I'll just hold off and grab the English one this summer.

I guess it makes sense to release this one as it's something of a series reboot and (from the short time I've played it) MUCH better than the first DS game.
I hope they tone down the overly cute voices though. Starfy randomly makes this high-pitched baby-scream sound in the cutscenes and it's quite annoying.

I still HIGHLY recommend the GBA trilogy to everyone interested in the series though!
Densetsu No Starfy 3 actually has a pretty major cameo....
WARIO! :D

I have one of the Staffy DS games, but I can't remember which one offhand. I think it was 4, but don't quote me. It was fun for a little while, but I got to a point where you had to figure out what sequence to do things in and if you did things in the wrong sequence you ended up at the start again. Actually there were several of these. First they were simple enough, but then I got to one that was much more complex and my patience for the repetitious trial and error involved in figuring it out ran out. I haven't played it since and I haven't had any interest in Staffy/Starfy since. I'll pass on this US release unless I hear really good things about it.

Maybe I just got the bad egg. I don't know. Or maybe I just don't have the patience for that kind of thing any more.

If this is the one where you can get....I think it's a whale suit...it's the cutest damned game ever.

Except maybe for that...Kumatora (?) game, with the girl in the bear suit, who you get to slap on the head when she....I dunno, does something bad? I mostly had to sit down after watching the trailer, and I was already sitting down, it was so fucking cute.

It's #4, the worst in the series IMO.

In Starfy 1-3 on GBA after completing the game once you have to go through the ENTIRE game again and find hidden treasures in each stage (and up to 4 new stages in each world) in order to fight the true final boss and see the best ending. This was fairly straight-forward as the treasures in the stages you've already completed would just appear at the end of each stage and the treasures in the new stages weren't all that hard to find either.

In Starfy 4, they changed the treasure hunting into an "Answer Card" quest in which you have to collect cards with different pictures in order to answer trivia questions asked by a magic door in each stage. If you have the correct cards/answer his question, he will open the door (er...open himself?...ew) allowing you to access the new area in that stage. Unfortunately, the cards are scattered across all 9 worlds and you have to find them yourself with no hints whatsoever.

Tracking down all the cards was a huge pain in the ass, even while using a Strategy Guide (which is absolutely NECESSARY to find all the treasures and complete the bestiary in each of these games, IMO) and it ruined the game for me.

Luckily (?), the one being localized in America this summer is the 5th Starfy game, which is something of a reboot as it features mostly new characters/locations. I haven't finished it (and I probably won't so I can play it in English later), but I got about 1/3 of the way through the 1st quest and it seems MUCH better than Starfy 4.

So it's the second one on the DS (Stafy... Starfy 5)

Thank god. IT's the only one I don't have.

Finally Nintendo. FINALLY!

Now get your asses moving with Professor Layton 2. I'm ever so pissed it's not on the release schedule.

Apparently selling over a million copies in NA + Europe isn't enough for Nintendo anymore. fuck 'em.

Looks interesting, can anyone who has played the series tell me how difficult the games are?

Will be picking it up as long as it isn't too easy.

For those looking for another impressive core Nintendo franchise to obsess about for the next few dozen years, Starfy is your man. Combining some of the best elements from games like Kirby, Donkey Kong Country, Little Nemo, and Mario himself, TOSE’s latest offering is a DS gem, and brings about more content and diversity than almost any other sidescroller on the system. You’ve got five main mini-games (all wireless supported), a drop-in/drop-out two player mode for specific bosses and levels, plenty of great level design that pushes the core experience, and more collection and “un-game” offerings than you could ever hope to fully explore. The only real downside to the game is that it’s so over-the-top and cluttered with modes and options that most young players could be pretty overwhelmed pretty fast. When the biggest problem out there is that there’s too much to see you’ve got a winner on your hands.

I have one of the Japanese games (Starfy 3, I believe) and *don't* like it much at all, but I'm told it is the relative stinker of the series. So... I'll give this US version a try at some point.

Not a single one of us bought it? I just ordered it from TRU with their B1G1 50% off, but I probably won't get to it for a few weeks.

I picked it up, have been playing it a lot. I like it, simple but fun.

altho, I didn't care for the snowball segments in world 3.

yea simple but fun... Played it for around 3 hours last night , rental off a local store... sadly i be lucky to put another 2 hours in before it goes back sunday. with rock band for the psp coming today and class of heroes tomororw... seems this game is done

I've put in about 2 hours so far and I'm really enjoying what I've played. If feels very Kirby-ish with the cutesy characters, abilities and platforming. Great experience so far. My only complaint is that it seems too easy for its own good, but I'm only on world 2 right now, so that could change.

I took my kids to the Mystic Aquarium in CT last week, and Starfy was there giving out stuff and taking pics with the kids. They has posters for the game all over the place, and they gave out pencils, stickers, and a bag of other trinkets. I had no idea who this Starfy guy was, but my kids loved him. It was some pretty good promotion.

Finished this tonight. Enjoyed the hell out of this game. Took about 6 hours I'd say, but after you finish the game, it unlocks an extra world, and there's still all the treasure chests to collect to open up secret areas and such. I'd say it was worth the price of admission.

I beat it 2 nights ago or so, it was fun, never got a spike in difficulty which if what i figured since it targeted at kids. I would go back for all the chests and such but my ds died and I dont have the cash for a new one right now. Sucks for me.

Picked it up this week. I'm only in World 2, and the game is shockingly easy, but I find I don't have the time or patience lately to get pushed around by video games, so it's a perfect fit.

So far, the mini-games I've played in Starfy are better (more involved) than the simple, timing-based/computer AI affairs from Kirby: Super Star Ultra. Who doesn't love making Octo-Dumplings?

Just finished it, 12 hours or so but felt much longer. Really starts to drag when you realize the difficulty never goes up at all.

Is NSMB a lot harder than this game? I just need to know how easy this game really is. Basically I want the game, but I am deciding how early I pick it up.
because it pretty much is one
One of the reasons I want it. I'll probably pick it up when the price drops, as it inevitably will.

Your best bet is this buy 2 get 1 free sale this week at Best Buy. Kirby DS games have a tendency to become rare down the line, as did the GBA titles. The same happens with Wario titles.

Given that this may or may not end up being a successful franchise for Nintendo (which we'll know soon) would dictate whether or not it has a short print run, and whether future titles show up.

In other words, a 33% sale via Best Buy (and TRU later this year) are your best bets.

Question for those of you who picked this up (and have played it as well):

Is there any reason to hold onto the pearls I've been amassing? Or should I just blow it all on random gear in Moe's shop?
