As EQ1 is $2.50 on Steam. We're discussing here creating some characters to play together on a server, so that we have friends to group with.

Discuss.

heh, not that steam topic is too hot and heavy, good idea on the new thread: I'd personally favor a DPS class, maybe even replay a monk, or try a rogue. I wonder how the state of the current game has changed the way these classes work now though. I suppose I could google and find a website that's maybe up to date, and there's always the forums.....

I generally play a healer as a I said in the other thread. I'm not opposed to any of them. Druid might be good due to porting. I wouldn't be opposed to playing an Enchanter either.

I'm debating when I want to start playing, but I'm probably going to go for a gnome wizard or mage (most likely Wiz)

I'd like to give people a few days. I won't be around this weekend anyway, so it'll be difficult for me to get on before early next week anyway.

And then we need to give people some time to level up just a bit. Not much use in grouping before lvl 10 or so.

ok, I suppose I may as well buy this and start playing soon then :) wondering if we have any volunteers for a tank though

Been thinking and might do a necro, that was my original class I played in beta and when the game first came out. I know they aren't retardedly OP like they use to but man it was great watching my pet skelly beat an equal lvl warrior all the time haha.

Well this just depends on how we play. If we agree to play these characters only with each other and then create separate mains for playing when we arnt playing with each other id be willing to play a lot of different classes.

If these toons though are going to be our main charcters and people are going to play them at their leisure then I would want to play a class I know I like such as the Beastmaster, Druid, Magician or Necro.

I think its a really good idea to create 2 separate chars, 1 thats played only with each other and 1 we can play anytime we want. Reason for this is that every time iv tried to play with a group of people its always been inevitable that a few people tried to make those characters their mains and within like 2 weeks they had way out leveled everyone else to the point where the group had to break up.

Edit - So far it seems no one wants to tank. I would volunteer to play tank(again assuming we agree to just play these toons with each other)but iv never played Tank before. If you guys dont mind me learning as we go and no one else steps up to be tank then ill volunteer.

So far it looks like

Kaotik - Necro(possibly mage or wizard)
VGMunk - Monk or Rogue
Lordwow - Healing class(meaning Cleric is probaly best but Druid would do).
Me - Warrior if no one else shows up and if not ill go either beast lord, magician, wizard or Necro depending on Kaotic and VGmunk

Ya, I agree Mangus, we should make these characters alts. That way also if someone can't make it, they can spend some time just leveling up a few levels or whatever. I know there's probably a weekend or two I can't play very much (PAX, etc). So I we can just post what to try to get up to by the next play session.

Exactly, we find a time that in general most of us can play. So for instance we say Saturday from 11-5 we are going to play together and then if a week someone cant make it they can grind a few levels on their own. At the same time that also makes it so if random days pop up like Tuesday night from 5-10 or something then we can still play and if someone cant make it they dont get left too far behind.

I put a post up at gamefaqs saying we were looking for a 5th if anyone is interested. Would be nice if we can get a 5th booth so we have a full group but also so I am not stuck playing Tank!

I assume starting on the Freeport side of the world is OK for everyone? That will give us the opportunity to have most of the races available (Human, Half-Elf, Hafling, all the Elves, Dwarves, etc)?

What class are you thinking Mangus?

First off name is Magus ;) not mad just correcting you so I dont keep getting called Mangus ;)

As for class if you scroll up you will see I edited my first post just after you responded. Right now im thinking tank just because its needed, but im hoping we can find a 5th person that wants to play and they can be tank and then I can be BL, Magician, Necro or Wizard.

WOW!!!!! you and me the only 2 on the server... unless they changed the Mage class after about year 7... they where worthless (as in, nobody wanted um in groups).. we had a breif 6-8 months when the mana battery (which was boring as heck, but let us get a group or two) and COH pulls worked... then they made um complelty useless again.. When the Necro pet that people who made EQ said was much weaker then mage (earth)pet, could beat the tar out of it.. What sad loley mages we where...

So did they ever make us worth grouping with?

I do remeber I could solo pretty good till about 50ish... well as good as soloing was in EQ in the early days...

And whats this about merc?

I might be interested.. havent played it in 3-5 years.. I have most nights free from 5-11ish central time.. I could go tank, but as so many have stated... err... I never reallyplayed one.. believe i had a 65ish one that i duel boxed (soloed with a healer just tagging behind healing) for a bit.. but never grouped with her.. (gnome warrior FTW!) Did they ever open MONKs up to gnomes? the singel thing that made EQ2 cool... Gnome Monks! if WoW ever added Gnome Hunters... I would so play it again...

Any server pick?

guild name has to be "CAG" right?

I always loved my Mage even if no one wanted me in groups. His abilty to solo mixed with the fact that he had a pet was the main reason i loved him.

Mercs are a new addition in the last expansion pack or two. Basically mercs work like they do in Diablo but more effectivly. They are NPCs you hire and are of a base class type like Tank or Healer. They follow you around fighting for you, but they also take a chunk of your money.

No server or times set. Personally Tuesdays and Thursday nights are best for me, but I can make a lot of times work. I dont work because of social disabilites so im home all day and all night most of the time. However Tues/Thursday are preferred. Weekends are hit or miss.

Just let me know times/servers for the rest of you and ill see what I can do.

Thursday nights work well for me, but I usually don't get in until about 10 PM EST. Not sure how that works for you all. I wouldn't mind some optional weekend sessions, but not every weekend.

And sorry Magus!

Yesh 10 is too late. Have to be to bed at 11 so wife asks me to sit down and play a game with her from 10-11.

Other week nights are fine too so just let me know.

I'm fine with whatever, weekends are hit or miss though. Night/later evening (like 7-8pm EST earilest) is best for me.

I can probably work around schedules a bit, with a new school quarter coming up. I'm on the West Coast though, so it may be a bit early for me to play at say 5 pm (usually up late) but I'm sure something can be worked out.

BTW I haven't played since PoP was the current expansion (although I did briefly load it up for a week sometime between then and now, didn't really get into it due to being pretty heavy into WoW), so I'm really rusty, but excited to play again.

Having a character reserved for grouping is a great idea btw.

btw is there a certain server people had in mind? I used to play on prexus waay back in the day, but I don't really care....read supposedly that Stromm is the newbie server, so that may be a good idea.

I was in for the frist time in 7 years last night, have to say my new first Impression is posative. The level grind is MUCH faster (mana still regens to slow..boooo! corse my Wiz burns it like its free). The new tutorial zone is nice, new players are going to be overwhelmed by EQ's "older" setup still, but it will make it much easier. Honestly the worst thing I noticed was my player "ice skates" when walking (im sure he alwasy did, just didnt notice it years ago) and it pretty barren.. as in not many players so far in tutorial zone of zone just out of it.

If a server is ever set and a rough timeframe.. I think I'm in for awhile at least for sure.

Well from my readings of the forums, apparently there are two newer servers: Mayong and Stromm. Mayong apparently the more popular one, but it is a special server however--you start at level 50 (or was it 51?) with a bunch of AA's, so its nice if you want to just experience the end game, or skip most of the old world. However, the other server Stromm is a generic server where you start at level 1, so unless someone had some desire to be apart of an old server they were apart of years ago, Stromm seems like the logical choice to me.

I think Stromm it should be, that's the common thread on the newbie board over at EQPlayers.

As I said earlier, we should probably level up a bit solo before we group. Maybe to 10 or 15? It's pretty useless to group at those levels.

the newbie zone more or less takes you to level 10, and at that point, you're ushered into Plane of Knowledge to start armor quests...although from what I could tell, crude defiant (which drops in the newbie zone, as well as everywhere else) is superior, so it may be better to just visit hotspots (apparently xp increased areas) or to just do the crescent reach area, which supposedly you can use to level up to 70 or 75.

Don't think a time has been established yet, I'm gonna fire it up soon though to get a feel for it again and check out all the changes.

Finals week for me, so won't really have free time until end of week (thinking friday), but I will say I did get a chance to play, and leveling (at least in gloomingmines deep, the tutorial area) is pretty fast, got to level 10 pretty quickly. Also apparently there are hotspot zones (increased EXP earned), although those aren't available till level 20. It also directs you to various dungeons and areas appropriate to your level. I'm going to go out on a limb and also say the armor quests that are ,from what I could tell, inferior to the new armor drops. The really nice new armor "crude defiant" drops on the uncommon-ish side, so it drops often enough, and supposedly everywhere, but its getting your class armor to drop that's the trick...but at least the quests do also offer something to do instead of just mindlessly bashing random mobs in, and fill in pieces for armor slots you may not have acquired anything worthwhile yet.

Didn't have any problems soloing, not to mention there is now added "help" in the form of mercenaries that you can hire. You can hire a tank or healer NPC, and they do apparently take a percentage of the exp from kills, but manage to make leveling pretty fast, from what I'm told.

I bit on the steam sale and was really sad at the state of the newbie zones (zero people under the level cap).

I am playing on an emulated classic server, www.project1999.org
Vanilla EQ (no expansions), the zones have tons of action, over 600 people at peak hours. Got to level 16 today, I'm loving it :)

i played teh game hardcore till about 6 months ago

honestly i couldnt suggest the game to new players. it's been pretty anti newbie for a while now. the game strives on bringing old players back and the addicted player base somewhat happy.

to get into raids you really need to get over 1000 aa and guild hope lower end guilds to get geared up . if you're new to mmos id really say you're betting off goign to wow hehe.

i will admit tho i miss raiding eq. there are a lot of elements to EQ raiding not seen in current mmos or current games.

the game has it's problems and boy there are a lot which is why i've cut back playing it as my main game. think the main issues tho is the game is pretty outdated compared to many current games and the playerbase is just to spread out to the point it's like bring your guild or go home. :)
