The MS Xbox extened warranty??

Ok, to quote Ned Flanders, I'm in a dilly of pickle here. I bought a SE crystal Halo xbox in July 2004, got EB's 1 year plan with it too. Now of course just after that expires, the xbox starts going crazy on me and now even refuses to read brand new xbox games. I never considered the MS extened warranty because I had one at EB, but now with the xbox broke and nobody to repair it but them I'm in trouble.

So here are my questions, even though this thing is over a year old can I still buy this so-called extended warranty? Like $50 for two years of coverage isn't that bad in the scheme of things (especially seeing as how I can't buy another Halo xbox), but has anyone done this or heard much about them? Does it cost me more money to ship it to them for repairs? If so, does anyone know the average cost to ship an xbox?

I'm sorry if this sounds like a total "noob" question, but I figure maybe some actual gamers here could help me out or give their experiences/opinions before I tried calling MS and they try to talk my ear off trying to automatically sell me on the thing.

You can't buy it, since it's over a year from when you bought it.

If you call them on the 800-4-MYXBOX phone #, they'll tell you the very same thing.

You can also buy it in 1 year increments for $19.95 instead of the 2 year for $39.90.

How does your system not work? Sounds to me you have a Thompson Drive...

call them say i have a thompson drive that wont read new games, i got mine replaced for free minus the one way shipping, and i bought my xbox at launch ages ago.

So basically I'm screwed sideways is what you're telling me. Lousy microsoft, I still can't believe all they give you out of the box is a measly 90 day warranty. Wonder if that's the same for the 360? Damn, looks like my worst fear has been realized, it's going to take at least $100 to fix thing now I bet.

Also, though I've been wrong about these things before, I do believe the drive is actually a Phillips not a Thompson.

I have a phillips and I think its about to die... Most of the time it wont open when I tell it to, and just blinks green and makes bad sounds.

Yeah mine was running a little louder than usual for a month or two, but I didn't pay much attention to it because everything run smoothly. Then just not too long ago, I'm watching Batman Begins, it freezes, I figure it's the disc or something but now it won't read any games or movies.

I copnsidered repairing it myself for a little while, but I have absolutely no technical know-how, nor do I know anybody with some. I wouldn't even know where to begin or even if the lens in the problem (though it very well maybe).

Well green crystal I guess or whatever you'd call it, you all know the one I'm talking about probably...

You can't buy an extended warrany once your original warranty has expired. Some places like warrantybynet will let you add a warranty as long as there is 90 days left on the mfg warranty, but that won't do you any good now.

Just buy a replacement drive on e-bay for around $35 and follow this link through step 5 to take old the old one out and then just go in reverse to install the replacement drive.

Yes, it voids the warranty cracking it open, but unless you want to send it back to MicroSoft and pay the $90, this is the only way you can fix your xbox for under $40.

Actually, according to the rep I spoke with, they said you could purchase the extended warranty for up to 1 year after the date of purchase, as long as it's already working. As the OP bought it beyond 1 year from today's date (and they do ask for a fax of a POP to cover it with the warranty from day 91 to 365 after purchase), he's screwed.

MS charges $80 for the repair, and will warranty it for a year after the repair, and it includes shipping back from them to you. So, remove the $20 from the repair cost for the 1 year warranty, and about $15 for the Xbox being shipped back to you from them, and you're paying about $55 for any and all components that need to get fixed. Plus your shipping charges.

Oh, and if you open it, or the anti-tamper stickers are disturbed in any way, they won't fix it, and they'll blacklist the SN of the console and they'll never fix it.

I know because I sent my Thompson drive Xbox to them unopened, came back to me opened with a big fuck you letter attached to it. Made me go buy a new one from EB and trade in my old one as a "broken console". The BBB complaint with Microsoft is still up in the air at the moment about it.

If they did replace it, wouldn't you get a refurbed original Xbox? Or if they replace the drive, you Halo Xbox will have a black DVD tray.

Ah, okay. I just call it the Green Halo Xbox.

It has a black DVD tray to begin with, dummy. ;)

Honestly, I have no idea. Does anyone know? If all they offer is a refurbished xbox I'd have to say that's pretty lame. If I fork over $100 I certainly want my SE xbox back in it's original form.

That's the main reason I don't want to fix it myself, I'll likley mess up and it'll never work again. I've read all these tutorials and walkthroughs and all of them are greek to me so I don't think I'll be cracking it open myself. Just out of curiousity shrike, do you remeber about how much it cost to ship an xbox to them?

Ahh, I thought you meant the tray itself on the inside, which is in fact black.

I'm no electronics geek either, but you really shouldn't be scared of screwing it up. All you need to do is pull back the stickers on the bottom and use the Torx Screwdrivers to open it up and then pull out the old DVD ROM Drive. Then just put the replacement one in and screw it back together. It's not really any more complicated than taking out the batteries from a kid's toy that has a screw on battery cover.

I've read that they don't fix your X-Box, rather they just send you back a refurb one at M$oft anyway, so if you value the Green Xbox then you should think about fixing it yourself.

Either that or just trade your busted XBOX into EbGames (they don't test the systems traded in there) and get $50 credit towards a brand new one so you'll only be out of pocket $100.
