NFL won't let Nolan suit up on sidelines

Apparently, the NFL would rather its coaches dress more like Bill Belichick and less like Tom Landry.

According to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle, 49ers coach Mike Nolan recently petitioned the NFL to allow him to wear a suit on the sidelines during games ... and was turned down.

"To me, it's professional. I think it's respectful," Nolan said. "There was certainly no deal, no one came to me, there was nothing to gain. I wasn't trying to put the spotlight on me. But what I was trying to say, there's somebody in charge and this is what they look like."

Not in the NFL they don't. In the NFL, the guy in charge is wearing league-sanctioned team garb. According to Nolan, marketing issues were the reason the NFL denied his request to dress up on Sundays.

Nolan said another reason behind the request was a desire to honor his father, Dick, who worked the 49ers sidelines from 1968-75 in a suit and tie.

"I must say looking at the pictures of my dad — they are all around my office — I thought, 'I'm going to do that,' " Nolan said. "But they are not going to let me."
What are they going to do, fine him? He should do it anyway and tell them to fuck off.
I agree. You would cause a major PR controversy if the NFL fines you for wearing a suit. The NFL would end up looking bad.

I'm sure they would fine him, and possibly suspend him if he kept doing it. It's better for him to do what they say so it doesn't affect the team.

I agree with the other 2, he should take a stand and do whatever the hell he pleases, it's a suite for gosh sakes.

Why the hell does Nolan want to wear a suit anyway? Officially licensed NFL pull-overs priced at $99.99 are so much more stylish.

Let them suspend him. He's the coach of the 49ers; it's not like his presence on the field makes a difference.

I agree he should be able to wear the suit, but is it really worth getting suspended over? The niners are going to be a young team this year, they are going to need their coach on the sidelines.

I would prefer a suit than the other stuff. I always thought that Tom Landry looked cool with the suit and hat (and I am not a Cowboys fan either).

This is nothing new to the NFL. Players get fined over wearing their socks wrong and other stupid shit like that. Hell, players weren't even allowed to slightly modified uniforms or helmets to honor Pat Tillman last season.

Stupid-ass NFL. NBA players on the DL on the bench has to wear Suits, and this league says no suits, wear our products bitch! fuck that. Take the fine and make the NFL management look stupid.

You'd the Reebok would beg coaches NOT to wear their stuff. Has anyone ever thought to themselves, "Damn, that dark-green XXXXL golf shirt looks awesome on Andy Reid, I wanna get one and be just like him".

And geez, if you dressed like Bill Belicheck and stood on a street corner with a cup you'd make money.
