OH WHAT A RUSH!

35.jpg

Say hello to Hawk & Animal, The Road Warriors.

Perhaps the most dominant tag team ever, topping many polls of "Wrestling's Greatest Tag Teams": The Road Warriors held the NWA, AWA and WWF tag titles during their amazing run.

The Road Warriors destroyed everything put in front of them in the 80s. Simultaneously taking on the entire tag divisions of the NWA and AWA.

The Road Warriors were vicious too, they'd literally pulverize their opponents, until it was time to unleash the dreaded "Doomsday Device" a manuever that has been often immitated by countless tag teams since.

Speaking of immitations, The Road Warriors became so popular, that Vince made up his own version of them and called them Demolition, who went on to be very successful in their own right. The fact that an immitation Road Warriors team could fare so well, goes to show you just how popular The Road Warriors once were.

Finally, Hawk & Animal showed up in the WWF, wrestling as the Legion of Doom, and no longer using their kickass Iron Man intro music. The worst part was Vince stripped them of their nasty metal spikes, replacing them with more kid-friendly plastic ones. Oh well, regardless of all that, The Road Warriors remained popular.

The Road Warriors would then bounce between WCW and the WWF always staying near the top of the card throughout the early to mid 90s. The other consistancy was Hawk's alcohol and addiction problems...

On October 18, 2003, Michael "Hawk" Hegstrand was found dead, having passed away in his sleep at the age of 46.

Many teams have tried to emulate and immitate the original Road Warriors, but no team has ever dominated the entire wrestling scene the way Hawk & Animal did.

More on the Road Warriors:

Very nice job, Horsey. I was hoping to see this amazing team honored in a wrestling topic. :)

Anyway, I finished disc 1 of the Hogan set. Very well done. It's done in the style of the Ric Flair set. The set is hosted by Mean Gene and Jimmy Hart, and it moves from each segment in this fashion: they speak to Hogan or other wrestlers (which have ranged from Greg Gagne to Paul Orndorff to Hulk Hogan himself), and then show the segment or match that they focused on in its entirely.

Hogan's main program snippets are both new and old. However, with the old ones (that appeared during the main program on "Hulk Still Rules,") you are treated to longer, "uncut" so to speak, interview snippets. For example, he mentions the time that Vince Sr. fired him for wanting to film Rocky III, but in this program his snippet is longer and he goes further into that period of time and that happening in his life.
Saucy did you say that the Hogan dvd set is only 20? If so, where?
I found it at a Wal-Mart just out of town that I sometimes deliver to. I passed by there again today, and it seems like there are only a few sets left, but they all seemed to be the 3-disc regular edition. I suppose I got lucky and nabbed a 4-disc exclusive edition.

But yeah, the standard price on it should be $19.96. According to some wrestling sites, people are reporting that some Wal-Marts have it already. However, there's only a few 4-discers out there it seems. Perhaps it's going to be one of those deals where you can pay $5 or so more for the extra disc, like they do with most new releases.

That pic reminds me of the good old days, back when Animal didn't have a beer gut. Speaking of which, whatever happened to him? He hasn't been on TV since April.

Prolly got lost as a Ponderosa in Topeka, Kansas, and decided "to hell with WWE" and just stayed there. He's been eating buffalo wings and t-bone steaks there since June, reporters say.
Anyone ever been to a diner/Waffle House where the waitress had a voice like Hawk?

 hahahahahahaha

Excellent thread choice. It feels overdue that it took this long for them to get their own thread.

Those cigarettes'll get you every time.

"OK, honey, so that's scrambled eggs, sausage links and hash browns. Anything else? WHAAAAAAT A RUUUSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!"

I'm surprised it took so long for WWE to take JC's profile off the site. That should shut people up who said "HE ISN'T FIRED CUZ HE'S STILL ON ECW'S SITE!" though, so I'm happy. Boogeyman is rehired, according to a Booker T interview today. It looks like I'll have to check Wal-Mart soon for the Hogan 4 disc set. That particular version has much of the stuff that I want the set for, so I hope I can snag it. It appears that I had my release dates mixed up. Piper's set has a November release, and Hogan's is (or maybe was) set for a 10/17 release date.

Make sure that you grab the release with a sticker on it that says "Wal-Mart Exclusive 4 Bonus Disc w/ 6 Complete Matches!"

Of course, the packaging will look different, anyway. The 4th disc is actually built into the book-style packaging, and not in a sleeve or anything like that. There were a lot more 3-discers than 4, so best of luck.

I finished Disc 2. It was pretty cool to see the old WCW stuff again. And it looks like that old news about WWE licensing some of Jimmy Hart's old WCW music library was true. "American Made" is finally heard again on this disc.

Also, it looks like WWE ponied up the dough to keep Jesse Ventura's commentaries intact on this release.

Also, I watched a bit of the classic cinematic masterpiece "No Holds Barred" recently.

Doesn't it blow your mind that the power of Hulkamania (or rather Rip's fans) was so amazing that it heals? At the beginning of the match, Randy (Rip's brother) is completely paralyzed. However, he inspires his brother when he starts to wiggle his finger to make the Rip 'Em sign. Then, he falls out of his wheelchair to grab Zeus... and at the end of the match, Randy is standing up on his own, and gives the Rip 'Em sign...

Also, the fans are cheering on a murderer. First, he knocks down Zeus and Zeus is killed when the ring collapses. Then, he scares Brell and Brell is electrocuted to death. Meanwhile, everyone's cheering him on!

Also, it's funny to imagine the people watching the fight at home. "Check it out, dude! They're fighting up in the TV control room! Ah, shit! The feed went out! Hey, didn't Bobby go the fight? We'll ask him what happened tomorrow."

"Hey, Bobby, how did the fight end? Did Rip win?"

"Oh, man, dude... it was sick! Rip fuckin' killed him! He knocked him off the catwalk and the ring collapsed! Then, he scared the dude in the control room and he got electrocuted! It was fuckin' sweet!"

I have a feeling it will be friggin incredible. There are a lot of his older matches that ive always heard about that i never got a chance to see and i've always been a huge Piper mark. I'll have to bust out the lotion while watching the dvd  (i kid)

Wow, that sucks... 1/3 of the matches are from Wrestlemania. So you're basically paying for the same matches again, if you own the WM Anthology. :(

TNA really needs to put Rhyno back up the card. Hopefully after Sting wins the title and has his fued with Joe, Rhyno ends up fighting Joe for the title.

I'm amazed that WWE was able to find the Portland footage for Piper's set. It's got a good match listing, and also apparently has every Piper's pit done in WWE, so it'll be worth a buy. Dude, you'd better go to Impact, it'll have Angle doing his first interview in TNA.

I'm suspect that the Angle interview will be a taped segment as the current "Bound For Glory" ads are hyping up Angle's first live apperance in TNA.
Who knows but that's what the BFG ad tonight implied.... they did announce he will be at the tapings this Monday tho. We'll see.
There's also pretty much no chance of Sting being there right? He's "training" or some bs like that. Oh well, maybe I'll get to see leisure suit Lex.

Ugh, I'm so pissed I can't go to Bound For Glory thanks to work. At least I'll be in San Diego.

Holy crap, Antonio Pena died.

From Meltzer:

Hall of Fame promoter passes away

by Dave Meltzer

The web site of Super Luchas magazine has reported that Antonio Pena passed away earlier today. Early reports indicate the death was due to a massive heart attack at the age of 53.

No other details are available, although he had been ill for some time and over the past few weeks it was largely rumored he was in bad shape. The promotion itself continually denied the rumors, claiming he was out of the country working on business deals at one point, and at other points claiming he was ill due to bronchitis. He is expected to be buried in Mexico City tomorrow afternoon.

Pena was a pro wrestler in the 70s, who later became head of creative for the EMLL promotion. He was booker at the time pro wrestling got popular on television in the late 80s in Mexico City.

In 1992, he quit EMLL, and with the help of the Televisa Network, formed the AAA promotion. The promotion set business records throughout Mexico from 1992-94, allowing wrestlers like Rey Misterio Jr., Eddy Guerrero, Octagon, La Parka, Psicosis, Juventud Guerrera, Latin Lover, Perro Aguayo Jr. and countless others to achieve their first tastes of superstardom.

To casual fans and the general public, it has been the most popular group in Mexico for the past few years, and draws significantly higher TV ratings and draws larger crowds for big shows outside of Mexico City than rival CMLL.

Read what I quoted and you'll find out who he is. 10/5 also marked the ninth anniversary of Brian Pillman's death. Here are some funny quotes about him from Sex, Lies, and Headlocks -

[At Ohio's University of Miami] he made as much of an impression off the field as on, once astounding his roomates by having sex with a woman who was hanging upside down from a chin-up bar while wearing gravity boots.

With deceptively sweet looks, Pillman was cast as a babyface at WCW, hitting the road as a dependable player with a weak spot for seducing the mothers who brought their kids backstage for autographs. (Whenever possible, he pawned the kids off on stagehands while he took their moms to hotels that charged by the hour.)

Here are some of my favorite wrestling pictures i've found over the years.

Don't forget Rip's whispered words of encouragement as he helps Randy through rehab - "Rip 'em, little brother..."

That rules.

Brell was the ultimate heel. "MIZZZZZ Tidings.....TAKE....A LEAK" was arguably the greatest go-home line to a disrespectful female employee EVER, in fantasy OR reality.

Edit - LOL at the "McMahon fears Metallica" sign in the "I Paid To See CM Punk" pic.

Who's the blonde?

I took that fucking awesome shot of Eddie Guerrero from the JD '04 DVD. I've seen many of those pics on the DVDVR best wrestling photo threads, but a couple seem to be new. Here's another excellent shot of Eddie from that DVD -

And a really gory one -

In non-Pena news, NASH IS BACK IN TNA! HOORAY!

Yes, that is a classic movie.

"SELLS?! This sells! What's his price?! I want that jockass on my network!"

And of course...

"I won't be around... when this check CLEARS!" (Rip 'Em sign)

And of course...

"DOOKIE!"

Great pics, OTM and Jay. :)
Wow...... Smackdown must of been THAT good. ;)
SD wasn't too bad, though they focused too much on the main event and not enough on the undercard.

I just hope No Mercy isn't too bad. Raw here was actually one of the better Raw's of the year (Edge/ Flair TLC match, Angle's final Raw match), so I am hoping that SD picks it up.

WE"RE NOT TAKING OVER!!

Looks like Big Sexy is going to be staying with TNA. I can understand wanting to sign him so that the WWE could not bring him in to do an nWo angle, but Scott Steiner has not been on TV for a long time and he was actually putting people over. TNA needs to get Scott's money right soon as he was great as Jarrett's lackey.

I thought that SD was decent tonight. Booker-Finlay ruled, and Batista and Lashley had a far better match than I expected. Tonight's matches had Batista looking better than he has since his return, and I'm more intrigued about the main event now that it's a fatal four way. I never thought I'd see Fit Finlay in a WWE World title match main eventing a Pay-Per-View... and here we are. Man do I ever love wrestling. I marked out seeing Steamboat and Rotunda on SD last night. Steamboat looked much younger than he has in the past, and Rotunda hasn't aged a day in ten years. In somewhat unrelated news, Marty Jannetty was fired again.
Marty Jannetty was fired on 9/28, just two weeks after WWE brought him back. He was scheduled to start touring with ECW that weekend but was pulled after twice going AWOL. He has now been fired 9 times by the company - 3 times in the past 18 months alone.
Hmm, I'm starting to hate CM Punk for some reason. I don't care if he can wrestle or not (if given the time), he just irks me.
How can you not love someone who put an end to Shannon Moore on TV?
