The Screen Tearing, Bad Framerate Gripe Thread

Last November I bought the world's most powerful console. It runs at 3.2 G, and through hyperthreading can perform six instructions at once. How come some games look like crap? I offer evidence:

- Last weekend I bought Blazing Angels. Once you get to the Pearl Harbor level the game is a v-unsyched nightmare. This completely ruins the illusion of flying.

- Burnout 360. The xbox version runs 60 fps flawlessly. Sure the grpahics look fantastic, but try racing on the european track with full traffic. I've seen the game drop below 30 fps...

- Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Great game, but occasionaly when using the sniper scope the game will drop in framerate, and the scope will lose it's fluidity.

- I won't mention Need for Speed's graphics gliches, nor PD0's screen tearing.

Why can't all games look at good as Call of Duty 2?
Are you running it at hi-def resolutions .
What is your set-up ?
I have good eyes; I have component input into a Samsung 27"

I run a component into a Hitachi Ultravision 53" projection SDTV .
I never really had trouble with Quake 4 .

Is your Samsung 27" widescreen or 4:3 SDTV ?
I'm gonna guess 4:3 , because I have a Samsung 26" widescreen HDTV [480p or 1080i] .

Oh, yeah. It's not the games, or anything like that. It's the console.

I have a component HDTV connection to a Phillips 30in HDTV (Thanks Dafoomie). And every game I have played is brilliant. Though I don't have many yet, but GRAW and ESIV are still amazing to behold.

Some games run so bad it's unforgivable. Some framerate drops like the occasional stutter in Oblivion or GRAW are compromise for processing power being used for huge environments and amazing graphics. COD2 may have been the smoothest, but certainly not the best graphically compared to these last couple of games.

It's early in the game. Looking at what's out now (FNR3, GRAW, ESO) as opposed to the launch line up, and you can already see a nice jump in what the devs are doing. By Christmas I'm sure there will be some incredible games that look great, perform great, and play great. You'll always have lazy devs who just won't optimize completely, but that's just part of the business. I'm personally thrilled with my 360 and the games coming out for it lately. And an occasional framerate dip in a game as awesome as Oblivion is something I can easliy forgive.

The problem: developer's aren't accustomed to developing for the console, and are under great pressure to deliver (without many delays).

Anyways, this will always be a problem with video games. Oblivion has several graphical problems (framerate issues, pop-up, etc.) but it really doesn't ruin the game. I've just learned to live with these things.

Everyone in the whole world knows that as the console ages and developers have more time with it the graphics will get better and the games will be optimized for the system.

Just like the last generation.

And the one before that.

But hey, a pointless complaint thread on CAG was SO needed. We don't have nearly enough of 'em.

The only time i've ever had screen tearing was with the Blazing Angels demo. GRAW gave me a framerate drop and froze, but nothing a quick reboot couldn't fix.

Id say Oblivion has horrible framerate, everytime I jump and turn, yuck. And other times its just horrible. But, cause its such a good game, I have to deal with it.

CoD2 annoys me the most with the flickering textures on certain maps. Blazing Angels' V-sync is annoying, but I don't plan on buying that game anyway.

Interesting to hear about Oblivion's framerate. Was going to pick it up but I'll probably just get the PC version since by the time I get around to buying it my PC will be able to handle it better.

There's nothing wrong with a thread complaining about stuff like this - even if it is more than the games than the system. Stop being so goddamn defensive and insecure. As long as you like the console, don't bitch about people taking issue with stuff.

There's something wrong with a complaint thread that's complaining about the WRONG thing.

Hey, lets start a thread complaining that a specific brand of computer has a bunch of popups on the screen whenever its on the web. Or a thread complaining about a certain brand of DVD player showing excessive violence in a movie.

You see the problem with something like that?
