The Warriors COME OUT AND PLAY

I'm not seeing alot of buzz on Rockstar's newest game which is easily my most anticipated one this year. Don't tell me there's no following for this movie or the game- dammit.

As the first significant entry in years for the long stagnant brawler genre, Rockstar’s new take on the 1970’s cult classic film looks to bring much needed new blood to the ring. The game expands to tell the origin of the Warriors from the movie’s story of the 9 Warriors making their way home through the entirety of a nightmarish New York City with thousands of rival gangs hunting them to extinction. Drawing inspiration and gameplay mechanics from numerous modern blockbusters in hopes of expanding beyond the realm of button mashing in side scrolling environments while retaining the glory of classic series like Streets of Rage, Double Dragon and Final Fight- the Warriors wields a violent host of genre defying features.

Squad Based Beatings: No longer will you have to rely on shabby sidekick AI to save your bacon on the mean streets. You issue commands to your posse of a half dozen Warriors with a radial menu (similar to Freedom Fighters) as needed to “Scatter”, “Hide”, “Watch My Back” and “Wreck em All” among others. Moving like an RPG party through the mean streets of NY, you’ll have to heal wounded members, assist them in combat with team attacks, explore the expansive urban environments, swap weapons and complete mini game scenarios with their protection.

Mario Party it Ain’t: The mini games aren’t your standard fare, they evoke all the typical lawlessness and violent style that is Rockstar’s trademark. Using various inputs, similar to those found in recent adventure hit Indigo Prophecy, you’ll unscrew car stereos to be sold for cash, interrogate street punks with lethal force (a la Punisher), mark your territory with a spray can (GTA), and dodge fast attacks or outrun foes in chase scenarios with rapid response inputs (RE4) among other activities.

Mortal Combat to the nth degree: Gone are the days of one on one fisticuffs, dozens of gang members will suffocate your small party as you execute multidirectional blows (Mark of Kri) in an effort to administer as much pain as possible. The various fighting styles drip with cheesy 70s kung fu inspiration and palpable gore as your stamp skulls into the asphalt, intercept punches with your counter move, gouge away with destructible environmental props and build up your Rage meter with combos for the most dire of circumstances.

Death is in the details: Split screen co-op play allows for you and a friend to split up and tackle various missions and explore the large environments as you see fit, not confined to a single screen. As with all Rockstar games, the audio is top notch and with a superbly fitting soundtrack. Every bat to the skull, shattering window, and ambient creak from the decaying amusement park of Coney Island is lush and chillingly realistic. A throbbing synthesizer beat permeates the gameplay alongside the dark 70s funk staples that bring the movie world to life. The entire world of campy violence is brought to life perfectly in the form of a post modern brawler with hard stylish action, moody atmosphere and deep gameplay.

THE WARRIORS hit’s the streets October 18th.

I'm with you man, I've been following the game ever since I've heard of it. Rockstar hardly dissapoints so I have no doubt that this will be a good game. I'm going to watch the movie again before I play the game.

People that got their hands on it recently at the conventions held in Vegas said it was pretty crap, which is disappointing, I was looking forward to it. I'll still give it a rent.

I heard rumors it was junk too. Never saw the movie though so this game wasn't ever really on my radar.

I don't really hold my breath for R* games. They all get built up so much and then we get State of Emergency. I own alot of their games, but I seldom pay more than 5 bucks for them. I'll buy it next year though;)

GTA is probably the only *decent* thing they've done...and even that is simply "decent".

The character design of the bully in the game of the same name made me want to punch him in the face. Somebody told me the game was cancelled but I don't know.

I am looking forward to The Warriors too. I hope that it's good. I'll likley wait even if it does get rave reviews since I have a ton to play anyway. I'll likely be getting this at some point though.

R* simply published GTA3. It wasn't until they realized what a goldmine they had on their hands that they actually went back and bought the small developer out.

I'm sort of biased being a huge Rockstar fan- loved Manhunt, Red Dead Revolver and all the GTAs but I think I just want some decent co-op brawler action. I used to play Streets of Rage and Ninja turtles as a kid with my friends and it was a blast. I've never seen the movie either but from what little I know of it- the story and ideas sound really cool.

Bully I'm not so sure about at this point- I'm all for whatever gets Jack Hompson's blood pressure up.
I want that game where you play as a Bully :p
I'm kinda pissed, Bully got pushed back to mid-2006.

Damn that is a long way away from it's original date.

damn, i hope that's not true. i preordered this game a few months ago b/c i enjoyed the movie. oh well, at least it'll be good trade in fodder if it is crap
i dont care if it ends up being shit, i plan on getting this at the tru b2g1
Nice new sig there sir!

How hard is it to create a decent brawler lately?

Urban Reign apparently sucked, and so did Beat Down, and now Warriors apparently sucks? If this is true, this is pretty much the end of the beat em up genre as we know it, because it's pretty much a failure by every major company.

Got a good feeling that Final Fight: Streetwise will also suck ass.

So who got this? I want to pick it up but Im really curious about the combo system. I heard its complex but they dont go into detail. Is it like God of War/Shaolin Monks or is it that you HAVE to do a certain sequence (like the old MK games) in order to get off a combo?

Did you read the IGN review? They go in depth a little bit there.

i have it, its pretty damn cool. the controls are good, but you tend to run around in circles alot. when you try to retreat, it seems like the further away you get the faster you run, so i have a hard time getting lined back up with my oponent.

the fights are fun, and it not to hard to whoop ass. i have seen computer oponents pull off some cool moves that i have not figured out yet.

all i have done is a couple of quick brawls, but i am assuming the story mode is aweswome.

and i like how you can do 1 on 1 or co-op. nice

Yeah, but can you dig it?

I can dig it. It's fun. I had a chance to play it yesterday. If you enjoyed Manhunt, you'll probably like it - the controls are pretty solid and there's lots of gameplay variation (I'm not even a fan of the movie). Rockstar opted for smoothness of gameplay over detailed character models, but that's nothing new. I'd rather have stick figures fighting smoothly than polygon beasts duking it out at 20fps.

That said, there are some wanky "running in circles" issues, as mentioned above. It certainly won't "revolutionize" the brawler genre. It's decent, and NOT a "piece of junk", but I'm still waiting until it hits $20.

Has anyone read any feedback on any performance differences between te PS2 and Xbox versions of this game? I am wondering about this and Indigo Prophecy actually.

From IGN:

"Strangely, the Xbox version of [The Warriors] doesn't look too much better than the PS2 rev. Despite the fact that the Microsoft disc supports 720p progressive scan and Sony's doesn't (both do widescreen, though), the colors in the Xbox edition are noticeably washed out (more so than usual) and the treated characters look bizarrely pale as a result. But regardless of which version you're playing, the visuals could have been a lot better."

The wording might be a little misleading: I don't think the reviewer is saying the Xbox version is more washed-out than the PS2 version, just that it's more washed-out than most other Xbox titles. It looks like you can't go "bad" either way - you'll still get the same flipper-hands on characters. I wonder if the washed-out look was done on purpose to give it that cheesy 80s low-budget look...?

I've heard Indigo Prophecy definitely looks better on the Xbox.

They probably made this for the PS2 and ported it to the Xbox without tweaking the graphics much, if at all.
