CAGiversary!
I'm not seeing alot of buzz on Rockstar's newest game which is easily my most anticipated one this year. Don't tell me there's no following for this movie or the game- dammit.
As the first significant entry in years for the long stagnant brawler genre, Rockstar’s new take on the 1970’s cult classic film looks to bring much needed new blood to the ring. The game expands to tell the origin of the Warriors from the movie’s story of the 9 Warriors making their way home through the entirety of a nightmarish New York City with thousands of rival gangs hunting them to extinction. Drawing inspiration and gameplay mechanics from numerous modern blockbusters in hopes of expanding beyond the realm of button mashing in side scrolling environments while retaining the glory of classic series like Streets of Rage, Double Dragon and Final Fight- the Warriors wields a violent host of genre defying features.
Squad Based Beatings: No longer will you have to rely on shabby sidekick AI to save your bacon on the mean streets. You issue commands to your posse of a half dozen Warriors with a radial menu (similar to Freedom Fighters) as needed to “Scatter”, “Hide”, “Watch My Back” and “Wreck em All” among others. Moving like an RPG party through the mean streets of NY, you’ll have to heal wounded members, assist them in combat with team attacks, explore the expansive urban environments, swap weapons and complete mini game scenarios with their protection.
Mario Party it Ain’t: The mini games aren’t your standard fare, they evoke all the typical lawlessness and violent style that is Rockstar’s trademark. Using various inputs, similar to those found in recent adventure hit Indigo Prophecy, you’ll unscrew car stereos to be sold for cash, interrogate street punks with lethal force (a la Punisher), mark your territory with a spray can (GTA), and dodge fast attacks or outrun foes in chase scenarios with rapid response inputs (RE4) among other activities.
Mortal Combat to the nth degree: Gone are the days of one on one fisticuffs, dozens of gang members will suffocate your small party as you execute multidirectional blows (Mark of Kri) in an effort to administer as much pain as possible. The various fighting styles drip with cheesy 70s kung fu inspiration and palpable gore as your stamp skulls into the asphalt, intercept punches with your counter move, gouge away with destructible environmental props and build up your Rage meter with combos for the most dire of circumstances.
Death is in the details: Split screen co-op play allows for you and a friend to split up and tackle various missions and explore the large environments as you see fit, not confined to a single screen. As with all Rockstar games, the audio is top notch and with a superbly fitting soundtrack. Every bat to the skull, shattering window, and ambient creak from the decaying amusement park of Coney Island is lush and chillingly realistic. A throbbing synthesizer beat permeates the gameplay alongside the dark 70s funk staples that bring the movie world to life. The entire world of campy violence is brought to life perfectly in the form of a post modern brawler with hard stylish action, moody atmosphere and deep gameplay.
THE WARRIORS hit’s the streets October 18th.
