I didn't know where else to post this. I know it's not the GREATEST of deals, especially when you consider the entire series goes on sale for less than $100 about 3 times a year, but I was at Wal-Mart today and they had The Wire seasons 1 & 2 for about $28 a pop, which if I'm not mistaken is about 50% off the MSRP. This is probably YMMV, because I looked online, and season 1 was $54 and I didn't even see season 2 listed. Still, just a heads up.

I agree. My friend had it and I hated it. It's literally the only reason I'd prefer to buy all 5 seasons separate, even if it means I spend an extra $50-$100.

Yup, this is all you need to know. I bought the box set and the packaging is bad, real bad. Discs just shoved into cardboard slots, some in little baggies that don't do shit to protect the discs. It's ass, but the show is still worth it.
 
Best show to ever air on TV (think LOST is right up there with it). I live 30 mins outside of Bmore and it's amazing how accurate the city is portrayed. Will this ever be transferred to blu-ray?

I don't think a Blu-Ray version of the show would look any better than the DVD's. They could convert it to a 16:9 widescreen, but I would assume they would have to crop the picture. So don't hold your breath for a Blu-Ray release.
 
The packaging in the box set isn't the greatest, but I don't know if I'd call it "atrocious". I haven't had a problem with them sliding around and for $90 (on sale) for the complete series I can't really complain.

Yeah, I remember one of the creators of the show being asked that a while ago and his answer basically being "no". He purposefully shot it in 4:3 to establish a certain feel for the show. Bummer, though.

Well, 4:3 aspect ratio has nothing to do with whether or not something can be released on Blu-Ray. There are alot of 4:3 movies on Blu-Ray.

The key is whether or not it was filmed on film. If IMDB is correct that it was filmed on 35 mm, it could easily be remastered for HD release.

I was always under the impression that it could not be converted to blu ray/HD but I was looking at My "HBO series On Demand" last night (I have Verizon) and The Wire season 1 was available to watch in HD...I already have the boxset which the packaging is not as bad as everyone is making it out to be(atleast mine isnt), but I watched the first episode to say if I could notice a difference in picture and the picture was def. an upgrade over the standard DVD picture but it certainly was not great either.
