Thinking of getting a ps3, have a couple of questions.

I just sold my wii, I wasn't going to, but I got a great offer on it from someone and then they started trying to haggle me down in price afterwards. So I ended up e-baying it with the intent of using my wii money + a bunch of gift cards to pick up a ps3 since the wii is so cheap the cost won't be a issue down the road.

Now after reading all the stuff from the "haters" I have been kind of going back and forth on the idea for the last couple of days..

My main question is : I got my TV a few years ago and the only "HD" it does is 1080i and 480p. It is a 47" rear projection panasonic and it looks great for my 360.. After reading some stuff here and other sites I was wondering if the ps3 scalling stuff is really that big of a deal? Is it going to look bad on my older HDtv?? The whole games are in 720p and downscalled to 480p thing kind of has me worried now, since some people are making such a big fuss about it.. Are there any other problems like this I should be aware of?

If anyone could give me a little help/advise it would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Forgot about this, Was also wondering if the BC is ok, since I want to get my ps2 out of the living room. I hate having all the cords and stuff out in the middle of the floor while I am playing. It would be nice to have everything wireless now.

I don't think buying a PS3 would be a good idea if your TV doesn't support 720p. While this problem doesn't affect all games, those games that don't support 1080i will look pretty crappy in 480p.

A lot has been made about the ugliness of some PS2 games when played on the PS3, but for the most part I don't think it's as big a deal as many have said. I'm currently playing Final Fantasy XII, which some labeled as the "worst of the worst" in terms of appearance when played on a PS3 and I think it looks pretty good.

Why do they look so crappy in 480p? Would it change anything if the ps3 was set to only output in 480p? Is this something they are expected to fix anytime and is there anywhere that has screenshots of the 720p games downscaled?

They look crappy because it's 480p. Simple as that. It's not HD. If you're satisfied with just 480p, I guess you could live with it, but it'll look a lot more like a last-gen system's graphics.

I'm hoping that the scaling issue is a fixable one, but Sony hasn't given any indication that they are working on it, so who knows?

480p doesn't look bad but not as good as 720p or 1080p if you have not seen it above 480p i think it looks great. However the playstation backwords compaitbility is very good i can barely say its worse than my ps2. I think some games do not look as good but thats also because i am using component cables and many ps2 games are just 480i

My TV doesn't support any type of HD yet I still got a PS3. I guess I just got it for the games and not the HD stuff.

Yeah, I do admit there isn't much for me currently besides Resistance, but it will be worth it in a couple of months when games start coming out for it.

FF12 seemed to look a bit better on my PS3 than it did on the PS2, a bit more colorful and brighter anyway till I got to the ending which seemed a bit more blocky around the edges, but oh well. I still have my PS2 handy because it's got a flip top mod installed to play import games. I LOVE the PS2/PS1 memory card functions on the PS3 because it basically gives you unlimited storage space for PS2 games (which is great for someone that has 5 PS2 memory cards)

hey i play ps3 through svideo on my 20" lcd monitor that i pull double time with for my pc and i still enjoy ridge racer lol
So then why did you get a PS3? ::rimshot::
Because I happen to be a big time PlayStation fan, and I'm into many PlayStation franchises (many of them first party). I just couldn't wait to own one. There's only 3-4 games out for PS3 that I'd definitely own (only own one so far), but eventually, I see myself owning many more games because it definitely has a bright future (more bright than 360 and Wii for me). Also, its downloads are excellent at the moment, making my $500 purchase well worth it.
