I just got a package from FedEx today. It contained the games Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic Battle in it.

I didn't purchase these.

It is addressed to my house, but with someone else's name. That someone else happens to be a friend of mine. He's been coming over every so often and asking me if I have received anything in the mail for him. I hadn't until this point. He hasn't been over today.

The only reason I can come up with as to why it would go to MY address is so that he can rip off someone or some company. He didn't ask me if it was okay with him, and he previously made up some bullshit story about how he entered a contest but he was drunk and couldn't remember his address.

What should I do? If I don't send it back, I'll be nailed with mail fraud (most likely, although the value isn't over $100). If I send it back, then he'll get pissed off at me and I catch rides with him to work. If I keep it for myself and screw them both over...

keep it. He never cleared it with you to have it sent to your house. Learn him a lesson. Next thing you know, he'll be having his porn sent to your house if you don't nip it in the bud now.
 
Maybe he just wanted to order something and not get it sent to his house so whoever (mom, dad, girlfriend or wife) didn't know they ordered something. Maybe it's odd, but why do you automatically assume that he is trying to rip someone off? What is the return address? Is it a company or a person? If they are using FedEx it's likely a eBayer or company.
 
Don't keep it. Someone may be waiting for money or a game in return. I would find out more information from your friend. It may be legit and he may just be an idiot.

agreed.. this is one time too many... first its games then its going to be movies and pretty soon this "one time scam" turns out to be a daily thing.
 
If it was as innocent as not wanting his parents to find out or something (which is wrong by the way) then he would have told you that he ordered a couple games and had them sent to your house. Not just randomly ask if you ever receive any mail for him. If you feel guilty about keeping them for yourself, simply send them back with no such person at this address written on the envelope. Problem solved. I wouldn't give them to him.

I have a friend whos sent things to my house so his family wouldn't know about it, so this could be the case, only I was informed everytime, so take this bastard down and hide the keepings under your bed or something everytime he comes over.

how could this be?? people could get stuff sent to someone house and then say they never clear it with me (even if they did) just to keep your stuff without paying
anyone can make up a name and say UMMM thats my friends name and since i never said they could use my address i get to keep your stuff without paying. If its not your name then i say you either Pay for it or send it back

Of course, it is the OP's address and not the friend's, so he is liable.

There is NO WAY you want to keep that package. You know you didnt buy them so what claim do you have to them? You are either stealing from your friend, or stealing from another person by proxy. Think of it this way, you find a bag of money with BANK OF AMERICA printed all over it. Just because you had no part in the initial robbery doesnt mean the bank will let you "finders keepers" it.

And p.s. Your friends most likely a dick. Find a new ride to work and a new friend.

if i were you and knew the guy for a long time, i'll talk to him and find out more information. if i barely know the guy then i would send the package back. like many other cags said, never wanna keep what it isn't yours

Either do this or just hand it over to him.

He must not be a real trustworthy sort since your first thought is that he's ripping somebody off. It could cause you a headache if he is indeed screwing somebody, but hopefully if you just tell whoever contacts you (FedEx, scammed person/company) what happened and give them the contact info for this guy they'll then leave you alone. Your buddy could still decide to claim he has no idea what you are talking about and that you must have used his name in an attempt to frame him and keep whatever it is for yourself...

Bottom line is that if you immediately assume your buddy is lying to you and is probably scamming some Joe, you probably should get away from this guy.

If the guy has never given you reason to think he's a thief, you should probably figure there's some benign reason for him using your address. But you obviously know him better than anyone here. If it were me I'd probably give it to him, but let him know that anything else sent to my house with his name will be returned to sender.

I had a sort of similar situation. Landlord got some package sent to my address from a foreign country (address used to be his, but he had moved 2+ years before) I actually contacted the local PO and they said to just give him the pickup slip and let him pick it up himself. Problem is the mailman left it on my doorstep. Phone guy said he shouldn't have done that, but to just have him come pick it up at my place. So that's what I did.
 
Ask your friend what the deal is... but DONT tell him you have the box. If he's legit, you'll get the real story, then you can pretend that they showed up 'the next day'. If he skips around the issue, you know he's pulling something shady, in which case you should return the package ASAP.

If you happen to know any of this buddy's online info... you might try doing some research. See if he bought these gameson his Ebay account, or if he's trading on a forum or whatnot. You might be able to find the person he's ripping off and tell them directly what happened, so that they know they're getting their stuff back, and that this guy isn't trustworthy.

And find a new ride to work. That for sure.

No real loss there if thats your moral code. Being friends doesnt excuse reasonable explaination of his behavior. A true friend wouldnt put one of his true friends in this situation in the first place, now would he?
 
Just to punish him, keep the stuff and tell him you didn't receive anything.

Contact the person who you received the package from (the return address) and ask them what's up. If they clear it, then give it to him. If he tries to say he didn't get anything you can say otherwise. If he tries anything funny, send it back. He's not much of a friend if he's getting you involved in this without your permission.

Even though he didn't have your permission to send it to your house with his name, you should've have opened it. I don't think that's legal...
 
im going to be blunt, u have absolutely no basis to keep the games. you must either return them to sender or give them to your friend. since if u kept them u are breaking the law (1. by opening mail that you knew wasn't yours regardless of what address was on it 2. stealing your friends games if it is legit.)
