WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Bush administration has been carrying out secret reconnaissance missions to learn about nuclear, chemical and missile sites in Iran in preparation for possible airstrikes there, journalist Seymour Hersh said Sunday.

The effort has been under way at least since last summer, Hersh said on CNN's "Late Edition."

In an interview on the same program, White House Communications Director Dan Bartlett said the story was "riddled with inaccuracies."

"I don't believe that some of the conclusions he's drawing are based on fact," Bartlett said.

Iran has refused to dismantle its nuclear program, which it insists is legal and is intended solely for civilian purposes. (Full story)

Hersh said U.S. officials were involved in "extensive planning" for a possible attack -- "much more than we know."

"The goal is to identify and isolate three dozen, and perhaps more, such targets that could be destroyed by precision strikes and short-term commando raids," he wrote in "The New Yorker" magazine, which published his article in editions that will be on newsstands Monday.

Dubya did warn us he was the "Wartime President."

I'm sure they've developed plans for this kind of scenario because they plan for a lot of different scenarios at the Pentagon. The question is can it realistically happen...I'd say a small chance but a chance nonetheless.

I have a friend who is thinking of joining the military, but unfortunately he won't see this. He thinks the military has plenty of troops and that he has little shot of being deployed, and he won't believe me when I say otherwise. Apparently he has a friend who hasn't been deployed in the 3 years since he signed up who has been telling him how great it is.

Boy I cant wait till we go after those evil doers, and then we can have a big mission accomplished ceremony when we have the US in a three prong war with Afghan, Iraq, and Iran.

Hopefully this whole conflict with Iran can be settled peacefully. I just can't see us invading Iran, if we did it would be to destroy any nuclear cabability that they have, and would be fought mostly by air. Also depends on if we will remove the goverment that is in place their, i doubt we will becuase we do not realisticly have the money(we do but that would just but us more in debt) to remove and establish a new goverment would just cost way to much money and would not gain enough public support. If we do go into Iran I hope we'll actualy learn and fix our mistakes that happend in Iraq. Sorta jumbled but you get the jist.

I think the US armed forces has 2 million total civilians inlisted so we would have enough troops.

Iran would be the biggest disaster in the history of u.s. wars. No one would support us, with the possible exception of Israel. As far as a terrorist recruitment tool, Iraq would be 1/10 as good as our invasion of Iran. It would validate to many people what they already suspect, the u.s. is waging war on muslims. The population has no real desire for a violent overthrow of the government, and while there is much desire for democratic reform, the level of animosity of the government is not the same as in Iraq. The people would rally around the government in a show of patriotic support (as would occur in most nations), and not splinter as easily as Iraq did. They also have a respectable military that would actually fight, unlike in Iraq. Also, the division it would create within the country would blow away what we saw with Iraq. We can't even control Iraq, there isn't a chance in hell we could make a success out of Iran. It wouldn't be a question of manpower or tactics, we just don't have the capabilities.

Trust me if we had a good enough plan and the correct tactics are used in Iran would could defeat Iran, but at what cost? Of course troops will be killed and is it worth the price now i don't believe so, but I will stand behind the decision that my President makes.

You can defeat a government without actually winning and/or controlling a nation. Iraq is a perfect example. We defeated Iraq's government but "we're losing" (those aren't my words, they're colin powell's).

But this next part is a great example of what is wrong with america. You don't believe in invading Iran, but you would support the "president" if he decides to invade Iran? You would support a war that would kill well over 100+ thousand people (it would easily dwarf Iraq, especially since Iran has just under 3 times the population of Iraq) and thousands of your own soldiers, not because you believe it is right, but just because your leader told you to? You and people like you are sheep, nothing more.

Gee I wonder why it wouldn't gain enough support, would it be because they'd believe we were full of horseshit and out to put a puppet of the U.S. in to run Iran's government like with the Shah when we staged a coup in 1953 to get rid of Mohammad Mosadeq because he wanted to nationalize the Oil Industry? We say we want democracy in the Middle East but we're full of shit, look at Iran, look at Saudi Arabia. As long as we're getting cheap oil there it doesn't matter. Iran could've been a shining example of Islamic Democracy in the Middle East or something better than Iraq but we couldn't leave it alone for ONE reason. Honestly I wish we could be consistent and support democracy anywhere regardless of the consequences with France, for example: When Ho Chi Minh came to us FIRST asking us for help, for freedom from France.
Anyway, if we EVER messed with Iran we'd have to do it minimally. Even now I almost think they should foster Democracy on their own with no HELPING hand from the U.S. I'm worried we'd manage to place some extremist group in.

Thanks sarang, I can't believe that in all the reasons I listed about why Iran would fail, I forgot to mention the most obvious. They have already experienced a brutal american installed government.
