Trio of Nintendo Characters Announced for Super Smash Brothers Brawl

Samus Aran's greatest rival will be joining the Super Smash Brothers Brawl roster, as well as pint-sized versions of Mario's most formidable foe and Hyrule's Hero of Time.

SSBB director Masashiro Sakurai made the announcement via Japanese radio program "The Gaming Show" that Metroid mega-boss Ridley, Bowser Jr. and the Wind Waker version of Link have been added as new members to the Super Smash Brothers Brawl combatant list. The newly added triad join the other first-timers making an appearance in the Nintendo brawler-- Metal Gear Solid hero Solid Snake, Meta Knight, Wario, and Zero Suit Samus.

Getting the boot with this iteration of the Super Smash Brothers series are Young Link, the Ice Climbers, and Mr. Game and Watch. Sakurai expects a roster of 40 characters to fill the game, with other non-Nintendo characters joining the fray still a possibility.

And all we get is fucking Bowser Jr and Wind Waker Link?

fucking lame.

Ridley is cool but still. Out of all the characters we get more repaints... that shit makes me angry. I hope they would have cut the repaints and given us all new characters while KEEPING the unique ones!

I wonder if anyone else will get the axe?
 
I'm fairly confident that this is fake. I remember a while ago something EXACTLY like this came up, and I am pretty sure it didn't have any truth behind it. No Ice Climbers= Lame
 
why dont they add more new characters rather than replacing young link with a cartoon young link and a dumb bowser jr.? they also better nerf Marth with that digusting reach and power. maybe they should change some of the move sets on all the various similar characters such as falco and fox, ganondorf and falcon, mario and dr mario(or are they cutting him), marth and roy, ect... the only thing i am looking forward to is GANONDORF with a sword --

The actual director of the game made the claim himself on a radio show, so I'm guessing it's not a fake.
 
I was just saying the other day how I would like to see WW Link in Brawl, so, pretty cool for me. He pretty much replaces Young Link. I never used Ice Climbers, but Game and Watch was a pretty neat character. Looking forward to future announcements.

As cool as Sonic would be in theory, I can't really see him handling in any sensible "Sonic" sort of way. I see him being really fast and falling off all kinds of stages. Sort of like Pichu.
 
Statistically, Marth will almost certainly be nerfed. Whenever any character in any game is very high up, statistically any change will be in the downward direction rather than up.

Hell, thats a principle that works outside of gaming. If your parents are rich, statistically, you wont be AS rich.
 
Wasn't this a rumor spawned from Gamefaqs months ago? As in, some douchebag completely made it up?

And, come to think of it, I think they made up the whole "Sakurai said this on the radio" bit too?
 
Ridley sounds cool. Never cared for Ice Climbers or Game and Watch so its fine with me that they're no longer in the game.

My guess as to why the cut Young Link is that Wind Waker Link will probably have the same moves as Young Link.
 
I thought it would be neat if they had a character that had a different damage dealing differential depending on how much damage you had. Kind of like those ratios I think it was in CvS2

So when you are at 100% damage, the damage you deal is slightly higher than when you were at 0%. To make it even, maybe this character starts out very weak.
 
beh, I'm inclined to think it's repeat fake report. As far as other characters, Roy and Marth would probably would be replaced with newer Fire Emblem characters anyway. Heck Eliwood is basically Roy, Hector could sub for Marth except he has an axe. Lynn would be a nice add, as another kick ass female is always welcome. But that's just from the oldest one in the US.
 
I am OK with WW Link, but I like Ice Climbers. I thought they would do Diddy and Dixie linked together like in DKC3 (or 2?) to give you a balanced character to fight against Ice Climbers.
 
It would uber hotness if the WW version of Link looked like he did in WW though I'm not sure that's possible. Ridley should be sweet but Bowser Jr? I get a feeling like just be Young Link all over again.

I smell GotY... if it's online.
 
I'm betting this is fake too. though i know i'll be really fucking pissed if they cut the Ice Climbers, they're one of my favorites

Young link has been the WW link for 3 of the past 4 Nintendo games.

Besides, this is a random rumor with no validity. Nintendo will probably announce new characters by way of the trailers they have already been releasing. The SSMB team seems to get a kick out of making them.
 
As for other third party characters Sonic appears to be a given at this point. Wikipedia cites positive comments from the Sonic Team staff, so unless its killed at a management level its just a paperwork thing at this point.

At this rate, who could represent Hudson? Master Higgens or Bonk?

Ok first this article is bullcrap but let me say if this article was true. Why would Nintendo nerf characters like Ice Climbers and then add in a clone of bowser or bowser jr. I don't mind WW link, but seriously this has to be false, I don't think Nintendo is that stupid.
 
No ice climbers is stupid. I really liked playing as them in the original. Bowser Jr. is sort of meh to me, and Ridley is just badass.
 
A lot of people would be a lot of pissed to see Ice Climbers go.

This is one of these people.

I'll take WW link as a replacement for Young Link, and Bowser Jr could be a better, more playable and mobile character to replace Bowser with. Keep bowser as a minigame character or challenge boss.

Ridley wouldn't be right, he's too large in the actual games, and seeing a miniaturized version wouldn't work.

Good thing it's rumors.
 
Mmm hopefully it's partially true...I hated Game and Watch, Ice Climbers were good for a laugh but kinda annoying, Young link I like, but I guess WW link would replace him so w/e. Baby Bowser would be cool, Ridley would suck...

So ya Baby Bowser is probably the most interesting addition...but it's fake so w/e xD
 
I won't be surprised, when this is all said and done, if WW Link actually DOES replace Young Link...and anyone that thinks he'll just be a palette swap is a fool. I'd put good money on the fact that, if WW Link is announced, he'll be a unique character.

Texture swapping between Young Link and WW Link isnt that far of a stretch, since the Melee engine allowed Peach to change dresses to one that resembled Daisy's which included an emblem swap. The Polygon and Wire Fighters were just stripped down versions of the humanoid characters as well.

So if the Brawl engine is created with that kind of swapping in mind it is certainly possible.

No matter what, they're all going to be unique characters. Sakurai's made it clear that clones are either getting changed or getting the axe.

And god knows that between Minish Cap, Twilight Princess, and the classics, Link has enough gadgets to fill out at least two full versions of himself.

I sadly don't think that they'd ever put "The Regginator" in a game, no matter how hard he is to unlock, because, well, a lot can happen staff-wise between now and mid-'08.
