Time for a new Xbox 360...good deals?

Well the ol' tre sixty finally crapped out...again. I've got one of the first release models and I've babied it along for long enough. Had the RRoD a while back and did the xclamp and reflow fix which put me back in action for a long time. Then I did it again about a year ago and it got me to here. Now I'm getting new errors and no video so I think the GPU needs some reflowing or something. I just don't have the time to work on it any more with our one year old in the picture now. Anyway...

So I'm looking to buy a new one and get in on the extended warranty business. What's the best deals out there? I see BB and Target are both running gift card deals on Elites next week so that's looking pretty good. Anyone know of any recurring deals that may be better that would likely pop up in the future?

Ah, thanks for pointing that one out...I'd missed it. I'd be more inclined to sell the game right out just to bring the price of the system down, so that's not a bad deal at all. Looks like it ends tomorrow though so I better think quickly!

Anyone got any other ideas?

theres the final fantasy xIII 250 bundle coming out in march if you are into final fantasy. Also I believe theirs also the splinter cell conviction 250 gb bundle coming too.

*facepalm* It breaks 3 times and you're going to buy another? Some people never learn do they?

get the arcade model for 200 at gamestop, just make sure it's the jasper. The thing is so quiet you can't even tell its on not to mention the power brick is 1/4 the original size.

Don't be a fanboy, just help the guy out. Naybe he likes the games that are on the 260 better, or he likes all of the stuff on the marketplace or whatever.

As for the OP, I would suggest something cheap, so elites and 250GB bundles are out. The Kmart deal is pretty good, as you could sell off the game (even though it will probably be my 2010 GOTY) to bring the price down or keep it (THIS!!!!) to make it sweeter. What I did when my launch-box broke was to fix it so it would run for like 15 mins at a time, and then I traded it in to GS, to make a new arcade $100. If you can do that, then that's definitely the cheapest option!!!!

And to all the people who are going to say that is fraud or some little kid is going to cry his eyes out when he gets my box, GS sends ALL of their trade-in consoles to be refurbished, even ones that they can tell were bought like a month ago, so they can fix everything. It will come back to the store as good as a used GS item ever does. No worries!!!!!!

I own both a Wii and PS3, no fanpeople here. My point is why do people insist on buying crappy products, especially one that is PROVEN to have failed for millions? Toyota has one brake problem and there's a massive recall and drop in sales. What kind of idiots aren't treating the 360's poor hardware the same way? The games are the same as on PS3 and PC, there's absolutely no reason to suffer with such inferior hardware, yet it keeps right on selling. Doesn't look like american shoppers are too bright.

I know it all sounds mean but I just can't understand the reason behind this mentality. It shoudln't make me angry because it's not my money but it does. I need to take a breather, think about what I said...

He had what is probably a launch console. It broke I'm assuming over a year later, didn't want to deal with Microsoft so he fixed it on his own. Broke once more a couple years down the line and fixed it again. This last time, instead of wasting time fixing it again he wants to buy the much more sound Jasper chipset.

That's a way better story than the people who either:

A) Rebuy a new console every time it breaks

2) Send it into Microsoft every six months

Dude, that really is an idiotic way to look at it. Launch consoles sucked, yes, but they gave many options to ease the consumers' remorse. Newer consoles are perfectly fine, so why the hate? And as to your point of the games are the same, tell me what other consoles have Halo 3, Gears 2, Crackdown, Fable, and many other high profile games. And no, I'm not a fanboy, I just like those games. In fact, I'm trying to get a PS3, but I can't find a cheap one.

In my collection of 30+ the only one to EVER fail was the laser sled on my original PS1. I could have fixed it if I knew what I was doing at the time. I don't care to alter that record by buying a 360.

Sorry man but those games suck. Shooter, shooter, and well you get the point. Zero good games and no variety. I know that's getting off topic now, I made my point so there's not much else. The US is very wasteful when it comes to buying cheaply made, disposable goods.

I've heard of tons of cases of people having their PS3 disc drive break. Check eBay to see how common sales of new ones are. At least Microsoft gives a three-year warranty.

The fact is Xbox Live is an excellent service, the achievements system is set up well, Microsoft does what it takes to bring DLC as early as possible, and systems made over the last couple years are about as reliable as any hardware, especially if you install games to the hard drive so the console doesn't have to work to play them.

I have a Wii too and love it, but I don't think those discs need to spin as hard to work like the 360 and PS3 ones do. The HD systems really push the limits, especially when playing newer games like Modern Warfare 2.

Honestly, it's pretty stubborn to not buy it just because 30 percent of the systems failed from three or four years ago given the three-year warranty. Mine RROD'ed once and was fixed or replaced and sent back very quickly, and I've had it for four years and never installed games to the drive until recently. I can only imagine the Jasper ones are better.

Think of it this way, DP: The fact that people are willing to deal with the rare instances of failure by having MS fix the system or by going and buying a new one if the warranty is up is more of a testament to how good the system and Xbox Live is than one to how foolish people are.

Mine's out of warranty now and I'm probably getting the FFXIII bundle so I can get the 250GB drive while selling off the old one. I like it enough to invest in a new one, sort of like turning in a regular Nintendo DS for a DS Lite or DSi, etc.

Been away for the day...we had my daughter's first birthday party today and had a blast. Anyway, I'll just make a brief comment on the discussion that has ballooned.

First, I'm not a fanboy or anything of any system. I didn't even get the original xbox until about two years before the 360 came out so I was late to the party anyway. None the less, I like the 360. And yes, I've been joking with my buddy about how insane it is that the early 360 was such a miserable piece of hardware (dependability wise) but yet we're eager to jump right back in. All of my friends are on their second 360, I was the last to fall! And yes, it was a release console so I've had it for about, what...4.5 years now? Something like that.

Just to give the whole story, the thing didn't crash the first time till after the 1 year warranty was up. I didn't keep a close eye on the press or anything so didn't even know there was big problems until later. As a result, I had opened the case after the original warranty expired to clean it up inside (our house is extremely dusty). I think it crashed the first time somewhere around 2.5 years into it and I'm not even sure if they'd starting extending the warranties at that point or not. Didn't matter for me as I'd already opened the case so any extended warranty would have been void anyway.

So I did the research and removed the xclamps and reflowed it with a hot air gun. Worked like a charm! For about a year I think. Then I broke it open and reheated it again. Worked again up until now. Like I said though, I think I could probably fix it again, not sure, but I don't have the time I used to have to do this sort of thing with the baby and all. As time allows though I'm gonna try to get it back up and running so that my young nephews can have it.

Why not just go PS3? It actually crossed my mind, especially for the bluray. But right now I do enjoy sporadically playing on Live and all of my other adult friends play on Xbox. So I'd be losing that. Also, I've got a small stack of games right now left over from Christmas that I'm trying to get around to playing (Mass Effect 2, Assassin's Creed 2...both still in cellophane!) so it seemed sort of foolish to jump consoles with those games already in my possession. And beyond that, I do like the xbox and have enjoyed it immensely. I've never owned a playstation, any generation, so I just don't have that much of a connection with it. Nothing against the console though.

So I stuck with the 360. I do see where DPsx7 is coming from though, it does seem strange to go back to a brand that we know has performed so poorly. I do like the system though and ultimately that's what won out...my years of enjoyment with it and my friends. That and the price tag...the bioshock/arcade deal at kmart was too good to pass up. If I do decide to sell bioshock then I got back into a console for around 150. I'm happy with that!

Thanks for the assistance folks, now its time to go and transfer my licenses! Take care...

Edit to Add: I did however make certain that the new box was one of the newer Jasper model. Maybe they all are by now but I wanted to make sure.

Playstation 1 was the biggest piece of crap hardware in hardware history. The Electronics Boutique warehouse was stacked to the top, Raiders of the Lost Ark-style, with defective Playstations. My assistant manager's PS burned up the day he took it home - it was defected before we even sold one. They overheated and had the crappiest laser in CD-reader history, all thanks to Sony's in-house junk policy.

Fanboys are stupid.

Also wanted to add real quickly specifically to DPsx7, like I said, I definitely understand your point of view. And if there was nothing but a one year warranty on the 360 I may very well have jumped ship to the PS3, I don't know. But the fat extended warranty for the primary problem the box has been plagued with does make me feel better about going back into it. Its my understanding that the new model is doing quite well too. They seem to be considerably more dependable than the early models. That and the extended warranty are definitely enough to keep me in the fold for now.

Couldn't help but come back to add....holy crap this new box is quiet!!! Its practically stealthy! I'm honestly stunned at how much quieter this thing is than the other one...

Yeah, I'm excited to get a Jasper. They should use less power for the electricity bill, too, I bet. I got a Kill-A-Watt from our local library over the summer, and the 360 draws about twice as much as my TV, if I recall correctly, but I do have my TV set on the highest power-saving setting, etc.

While I'm on an electricity tangent: I highly recommend a smart surge protector with a master outlet that controls other outlets. Plug your TV into the master and your 360, Wii, PS3, speakers, etc. into the outlets that are only turned on when the TV is turned on. Saves a ton of energy/money. Best deal I found was using a Best Buy 10 percent coupon, but Staples and CompUSA.com have 'em at fair prices too.

My PS1 worked hard for years, it was just a poor design on the laser sled which wore out and the laser couldn't read well. Even the upside down trick didn't help. It was fine otherwise but I replaced it with a different model a while before PS2 launched.

Anyway the 360 warranty was out of necessity. The failures would have eaten them alive if they didn't extend it. And I'm sure they weren't going to complain when a user bought a new console in hopes it would be better designed - it inflated their sales numbers. It's not just the reliability though, I refuse to spend that kind of money to play online when PC has been doing it best (and free) for years. PS3 is just as good. More importantly since everything is multiplatform these days the PS3 wins as far as exclusives go. The 360 really has nothing that isn't just a timed deal or a cookie cutter FPS and I can't play those games on any console without M/KB.

I'm just saying is all, I know we went off on the side a bit.
