Tivo broke my Wii?

I installed a Tivo today - never had one before. Anyway, I bought a router to go with the Tivo since we don't have a home phone, and the only way to connect it was with wireless connections. Anyway long story short, I go into my Wii to establish a connection with the new router, and discover a shocking fact - my remotes (both of them), are completely useless. The aim is sort of in the general direction that I move the controller, but too uncontrolled and crazy to actually do anything, especially typing wireless encryption codes that are like 30 digits long.

Do any of you use a Tivo AND have a Wii? What are your experiences? Could the IR signals that the Tivo uses be interfering? What is going on?! This is freaking me out, because I don't want to give up Tivo OR Wii if possible. Thanks for any future help.

I have a DirecTV TiVo and use my Wii without any trouble. Do by chance use the IR accessory that comes with the TiVo, perhaps for controlling a cable box? If I remember right, it looks like a little LED connected to a small black piece of plastic. I'd imagine that it could interfere with your Wii remote sensor.

Hmm I don't have a tivo but my DVR doesn't interfere with my Wii at all. Did you hook up an "ir blaster" to your tivo to control a satellite or cable box? If you did you might want to unplug them and see if thats whats causing the Wii to go haywire. That is going to be my best guess at the problem.

Nope, not using an IR blaster - we don't have a cable box. Cable just comes in through the coaxial coming out of the wall.

I'd try to move the sensor bar to the top of the tv or away from the tivo. I would also try unplugging the tivo from the power and testing that. I would also try to find the IR on the tivo and put a piece of electrical tape in front of that to see if any of that could be the problem.

You might try going into the remote calibration screen on the Wii setup and seeing how many dots appear on the screen (you should see only two). If you're not getting IR interference, it might help narrow down a solution.

I only see two. They bounce around a lot though.

I'm wondering if you're getting bluetooth interference from the TiVo's wireless connection. I think 802.11 wireless networks can cause interference for bluetooth and vice versa... you could try disconnecting the wireless adapter from the TiVo and see if that helps. After that, I'm running out of ideas! :)

Hrm, if I'm getting two dots in sensitivity training, then it's not IR interference then? The movement of the dots is Bluetooth interference. That would make sense, but even then - what do I do about it? I don't have a hardline phone, I use a cell phone. Tivo needs the internet, and I'd rather not run a 25 foot ethernet cable in there.

If it did, the Wii couldn't run the controllers and connect to the internet at the same time. Something else is going on. Everything on the Wii works if the TiVo is unplugged?

I have a TiVo (and not a Cable/Box DVR unit). It sits on a shelf above my television - and my sensor bar sits directly on top of my TV. My TiVo is connected through an ethernet port. I've never had any problems with my Wii Controller.

Maybe this has something to do with it? I am using the Wifi adapter...but I unplugged that and the problem persisted while it was off.
If both dots appear and the erratic behavior continues even when you move closer to the TV, there is likely a problem with the Wii console and it will need to be repaired. Please click here for repair options.
Yay. I think that's my problem right there. The Wii made some weird noises yesterday when I turned it on, like a grinding sound. (It was as loud as a PS3 when you turn one on.) It also seems a little hotter than normal.

Well it sucks that you probably have a defective Wii, but at least you will be able to use both a Wii and TiVo once you get your unit replaced/repaired.

I had a similar problem a few days ago, but dont have Tivo. I went to play Wii and the pointer was bouncing around everywhere and going from one side of the screen to the other. It was pissing me off, then I finally realized what was going on. It was the christmas lights my girlfriend put up around the window next to the TV. The controller couldnt figure out which one was the sensor bar. Now I have to unplug the lights every time I play.

(Note: Obligatory joke coming)

You must have been playing with your wii too much.

:)

So set up two Christmas lights right under your TV? :D
