My roommate has a Series2 Tivo but I'm moving out soon so I have to decide whether to buy a Tivo myself or use my 360 as a media extender. I'm buying an HDTV, but that is more for gaming and less because I want to watch HD shows. I also have a pretty powerful PC that only lacks a tuner card and Vista OS at this point. So I see my options as:
Buy Tivo HD
+ Best UI
+ Easy setup
+ Always on
- $300 upfront cost
- $15 per month fee
Media PC with Xbox 360 extender
+ No monthly fee
+ Flexible
- $200 or so upfront cost
- More complicated
- Have to keep 360 on while watching
I guess using the 360 is tempting because I won't be paying any monthly fee for it, but the Tivo is tempting because its just so damn easy to use.
Can any CAGs shed some light on how the 360 (as a media extender) stacks up against a Tivo? Or even if you don't have a Tivo, how the 360 works for watching live tv, recording shows, etc?
**Note, I forgot my 3rd option, renting a DVR from the cable co... but I've used them before and they've sucked hard, so I'd rather go for the Tivo in that case.
