To sell or not to sell

I have a question I have alot of dvd's that I don't watch and probably won't watch again my question is should I start selling them all now or wait? I've sold some rare ones for about $7-10 but most newer ones go for around $2-4, I think dvd's are alot different then vhs tapes I think more people will keep watching dvds instead of up converting to blu-rays so do you think that the price of dvds will go up in the future as the demand will be higher but more stores will be selling more blu-rays then dvds.

this.

honestly you might be better off just going to a local 2nd hand store and selling them there. the price you can sell dvds for, especially after shipping, is not going to yield you the big bucks. do some research and hang on to any rare dvds or boxsets that you have since those will probably fetch the most. but dont expect to get much for your used matrix and fight club dvds.

I sold off all of my DVD's back in 2006 to Best Buy. That was when they gave 5 dollars per DVD in store credit. The associate put the store credit on a gift card and I sold off the gift card online for 85 cents on the dollar.

I think today you will be lucky to get 1 dollar tops profit from each normal dvd.

I would liquidate the common stuff ASAP by craigslist or set up at a flea market if so inclined. The most I'll pay for a lot of them is about $2.50, about the price of a rental. Though if you have any good anime, that might be a different story.

i appreciate all of the responses but none of you really answered my question do you think the trade-in value of dvds will go up in the future?

also do you think blu rays will takeover dvds and when?

Actually, the price can possibly go up.

I remember buying Titus Season 1-3 from DeepDiscount during a B1G1 sale, maybe spent $25 for both. Went to sell them about 4 years later, turns out they went OOP, sold them for $75 shipped.

No. If anything, they will go down in value.

Blu ray is already starting to take over (especially now that prices have dropped from ridiculous to now reasonable), but I think hi def digital content is going to become the standard within the next 10 years.

Yes I did...

Rare exception. In general prices will NOT go up.

If you have an entertainmart close by, that is your best bet. They give you cash on the spot, and because they are growing, I think the trade in values are still the best. Movie Trading company is the second best option. Bundles on Craigs List might be a good option for profits and avoiding shipping (which will certainly ruin any profits). I don't think DVD prices will ever have an upsurge in values, though. BLU-RAY and digital distribution are not necessarily killing the format, but they are driving prices down. I would say thin the collection out to essentials or favorites, and get rid of the rest ASAP.

here's why i think they might, dvds are different then vhs tapes I believe people who have a big collection of dvds will not get rid of them and still watch them. I know some people that say they really can't see a huge difference form dvd to blu ray and prefer the cheaper prices for dvd. It's hard to tell if dvds will go away or not, I could see dvds being around for a while and I don't know if blu rays would ever FULLY takeover. But if blu rays do eventually takeover dvds will be hard to find and for the people that decided to stick with dvds would be willing to pay more then $2-4 for a movie and maybe $6-10, that's why it's a hard decision to sell now or wait because it's hard to tell

Doublecheck what you sell. Some shit isn't going to get re-released on Blu. Stuff like The Wire is a prime example. Which undoubtedly will go out of print. I'm tempted to get a couple of the series sets just to hang onto them.

it's hard to let go of a movie for $2 though when u paid 15-16 for it but I don't want to be stuck with a bunch of dvds that will only sell for .50 cents a few years from now. But I still feel the prices could go up once they become rare but I don't know if I can wait and take that chance

And the majority of movies are going to be available on demand whenever you want via tv/internet/computer. You are going to be able to go home and choose to watch whatever you want via your remote control without having a physical dvd. It's already getting to that point now with the cable companies and one being able to just google whatever movie/tv show and being able to watch it online. Your dvd is going to be a coaster in 5-10 years.

This was what Some People were thinking back in the 90's:
"People who have a big collection of VHSs will not get rid of them and still watch them. I know some people that say they really can't see a huge difference form VHS to DVD and prefer the cheaper prices for VHS. It's hard to tell if VHS will go away or not, I could see VHS being around for a while and I don't know if DVDs would ever FULLY takeover."

The prices are only going to go down, if you think other wise you are only lying to yourself. The ONLY exception would be nitch market indy movies and Canceled/ Unpopular TV shows. These would be the Only things I would hold on to because the odds of them getting rereleased on Blu-Ray is very slim.
I gave them away, donated them, or chucked them. It's not worth the effort for selling.
Have you seen the prices for hit movies on Amazon/Ebay? Most of them are between 1-3 dollars used. Combine that with the fees you have to pay and the shipping fee usually not covering the total charges it takes to ship. You are lucky to break a profit.

OP Just have a yard sale. Make some fliers or whatever to promote it.

1 DVD for $3
2 for $5
4 for $10

Box Sets, Collectors Editions, just search on Ebay/Amazon for the going rate.

Sure prices will steadily trend downward overtime overall titles. But there are always exceptions from this trend. As other commenters have noted OOP dvds have a capacity to increase in value. Sometimes trendously. You really need to be informed as to what decisions studios and distibutors are making to supply the market. Not a very practical answer since I'm sure you have better things to do with your time. Incidentally I maintain and monitor the price history of all DVDs and video games on my website mx123.com.
