Yeah, if you can put up with the lack of backwards compatibility (I refuse to), that's probably the one to get. Sonic's horrible, unfortunately :( but it's worth something, plenty of fun Disney movies, etc. And you can easily throw in a bigger hard drive if you need it at some point (though honestly I think 40GB sounds ample for a long time).

Wolf, at one point i'm pretty pissed with the no BC thing. However, from a product/service point of view, that makes sense. Sony should never put the BC in the original PS3 to start with. Think about it, a new product has BC only if the older product is no longer supported. This is not the case with the PS2... Sony is milking the hell out of the PS2 and not only that, people still buy and love the PS2. Thus, you CANNOT do a full BC for something that's still being supported (think in terms of software updates). I know most of us can live with 80-90% BC, but that's a loophole Sony (or any other company) don't want to deal with (law suits, complaints etc...). The only way to fully support something is to retire the older versions, i.e. the PS2.

Anyhow, please don't let the lack of BC in the new PS3 stop you from getting a PS3... I resolved the problem by getting a PS2 slim :) Besides, with BDs and PS3 gaming, the PS3 is taking some serious abuse...

Thanks for the update Dark, I already bought a MGS4 Bundle for myself in Aug but this is something I could pass along to those of my friends who are still on the fence for purchasing one.. ;-)

How long is this going on for? My TRU is a dead zone so I'm pretty sure they got some 40's in stock. They still had silver Daxter PSP's last time I went.

I like your analysis, it's very well thought out. However, you are forgetting about the one thing that makes the backwards compatibility on PS3 a big draw (at least for me), and that is the upscaling it offers for PS2 games. If I wasn't getting married next month I would have jumped on the MGS bundle, but sadly at this point I'll probably put off getting a PS3 for quite awhile since backwards compatibility with upscaling is important to me.

BC doesn't matter that much to me, I already have a PS2 to play the games, and I don't really play PS2 games any more anyways.

Blu-ray, no need for wireless adapter, 40 GB, and finally some good games starting to trickle in, plus the freebies, not a bad deal in my opinion. Might be able to sweeten the deal with the Sony Card deal, don't know if you have to buy sony products at their site to ge the money back though.
Correction: Sonic the Hedgehog is a $0.00 value.
no, they would have to pay me 20 bucks to play this game

Good point... The older PS3's BC does offer the upscaling of PS2 games, which is a bonus for a lot of PS2 gamers. Yeah, unfortunately, that's one feature you won't find on the new PS3s. I hate to OT, but couldn't this be done with the PS2 as well? Maybe an update in the PS2's FW (lol) or a new PS2 slim? Anyhow, it's not a major feature (for me at least), i use my PS2 for RPGs (i think that's the primary reason why people still holding onto their PS2s). This brings up another interesting thing... I use big screen for PS3 and X360, so playing RPGs is kinda cruel to the equipments as well as to the electric bills (go green too).

These 40gb PS3s shouldn't be too hard to find, i saw a few in NYC, good luck to those looking for them :)

argh.... i said i'd wait for a decent bundle at a nice price, and this is really close, but i don't need the charger (more clutter) and i've played the game on 360 already and it borders on torture.

what kinda "resale" value do you folks think the charge station and the Sonic game have? i'm already liking the price and the Disney Blu-ray sounds nice, but i fear that jumping on this may end up being premature: with Black Friday and October's early xmas sales coming, could a better bundle be around the corner?

Wow! Killer deal for new owners. I too like the BC and thus picked up an MGS4 bundle a few weeks ago. Love it and my wife can still play her PS2 Singstar games and use her mics just fine. Plus I wanted the dual shock controller and MGS4 anyway (which I just beat). I like the PS3 graphic wise and it allows me to have a BR player in the bedroom now instead of just in the theater room (although I have yet to watch a BR movie on it). Playing Star Wars now and so far I like it a lot. I always did like the PS3 controllers better than others. The newness of it is the only reason I haven't turned on my 360 in about a month though as not too many exclusive games on the PS3 as of yet.
My store (Clay, NY) has this deal going on as well.
thanks very much for the confirmation. i guess i'll mosey in tomorrow, and if it's goin' on, i'll probably just go for it. i have a family member who can buy it with their employee discount, and then if i sell all of the extras, i'll likely get this for under 300.

Sorry, employee discount does not work on systems.

whoops, you'd think after i worked there for 5 years (98-03 at the National City CA store), i would've remembered that! thanks. still looking like a good choice, unless that Blockbuster 299 price is real, which doesn't seem likely right now.
