I recently got my hands on a trade demo for the new Transformers (PS2) game from Atari.
Before I go any further, I must inform you that I was a big (and I mean big) fan of the 80s Transformers cartoon, but I am not familiar with this new version of Transformers. That being said, after playing this impressive demo, I am hoping that Atari gives us some old school Transformers love some time soon.

The demo is pretty short, but gives you a good feel for how the game will play when it ships in mid May. You start the game at Autobot HQ, which serves as main in-game menu system. Here you can select your Autobot, choose your load out of Mini-cons, and decide where you would like to be deployed. In the demo, you control Hotshot, one of the three selectable Autobots (Optimus Prime and Red Alert are the other two). If you are like me and had no idea what Mini-cons are, I'll fill you in. At least in the game, the Mini-cons provide additional weapons and functions to your Autobot. In the demo, I found a Mini-con that gave Hotshot energon seeking missiles and another Mini-con that gives your Autobot a kind of energon thermography system, which makes spotting the Decepticons hiding in the thick jungle much easier.

The game's controls are very straightforward. In robot mode; forward, backward, and strafing movements are handled by the left analog stick and turning/aiming by the right stick. Jumping is done with L1, while weapons and Mini-cons are activated by the other 3 shoulder buttons. Transforming is done by pressing the triangle button and is as satisfying as one would hope. When zipping along in vehicle mode, transforming will send your Autobot up in the air while he transforms, coming to sliding stop when he lands. Steering in vehicle mode is handled by the left analog stick, with R1 & L1 controlling acceleration and braking respectively.

The Amazon is the only available location in the demo and it looks good, very good. The environment is large and detailed, with lush vegetation and ancient ruins. Navigation is handled by large towers of light, which keep you moving in the right direction and act as checkpoints. Optimus Prime will also give you a shout out letting you know what you need to be doing. In this mission, we are told we need to locate some Mini-cons before the Decepticons and their Decepticlone army get them first. Decepticlones are the expendable "Stormtroopers" of this game, as every battle can't have you fighting Starscream or the other Decepticon "stars". Those guys are saved for boss battles, which aren't in the demo as far as I can tell.

Combat is pretty fun as you can run the bad guys down in vehicle mode, or shoot 'em up in robot form. The lighting effects and other nice graphical touches help make the combat more engaging. You will never doubt whether or not you "got him" or not as destroyed robots explode grandly with fire and electricity. Smoking parts will also rain down from the sky. In another nice touch, if a part of a destroyed enemy falls on a hill, it will roll down.

All in all, it seems like an unusually good game for a TV licensed product. If someone would just answer my prayers and re-make this game with the Generation One Transformers, I would be in heaven.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Check out a video clip. More screenshots and stuff here.

UPDATE - CheapyD at the Transformers 20th Birthday Party

I was invited to the Transformer's 20th Birthday party at a loft on the west side of Manhattan. I had a chance to get a demonstration of the full version of the game from Atari producer Jon Chmura. I was shown a few more parts of the game, including a boss battle against Tidal Wave. It was pretty impressive as Tidal Wave is HUGE. Your Autobot is about the size of his foot, and has to climb a few hills in order for his weapon to be in range of Tidal Wave's head (his weak spot).

I was also shown some of the unlockable extras which include toy models, animated toy transformation diagrams, and public service announcements from the G1 series.

I asked Mr. Chimura about the possibility of a game based on the classic 80s characters and why they decided to go with the new characters in this game. I was told they were looking for a more battle-hardened look to the robots and that was more in-line with the new Transformers. He said he wold love to work on a game based on the classic characters, so lets keep our fingers crossed that he gets his wish.

I couldn't hear over the battle sounds...is the original transforming sound effect played when you transform? Also, who does the voice for Optimus Prime? I haven't watched the cartoon since I was a kid...it would certainly be a nostalgic shot in the arm to hear [the original] Optimus giving mission briefings or in-mission orders.

[edit : not the original transforming sound. D'ohhhhhh. Not the original Optimus! D'OH!! Hmm. For a nostalgia title, it's not terribly nostalgic, is it. Then again, maybe it's not geared towards my age group. Maybe it's supposed to appeal to a younger audience who grew up with the later version(s). Alas.]

[edit: Holy crap, I just looked up who did Optimus Prime's voice in the original tv series: Peter Cullen. His was also the voice of Venger in the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon series!! Weeeeiiirrdddd. And he's also Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh cartoons and movies. Holy craaaap! ..as StrongBand would say.]

Its definitely not the original transforming sound (its similar though) and not the original Optimus. The sounds are probably from the new show.

If they took this game and injected the old school flavor, I'm embarrased to say I'd spend more than $50 on it.

Yeah, I bet they even downplay the importance of the Autobot Matrix of Leadership in this one...
at least they don't have the annoying kids in thier orange dorksuits running around.

Drools... I'm with you in the embarassment. I've been wishing for a good Transformers game based on the original 80s cartoon for 20 years.

Been thinking about transformers recently too... Just bought season 3 part 2 dvd for 22.50 at FYE.com ($30 - 25% off on select anime until 4/9)... Also been looking at the 20th anniversary optimus prime toy; buying the $70 toy, now that's embarassing.

Only if you think it is. Of couse, I might not be a good judge on that one... I actually collect Transformers, Gundams, and G.I Joe figures, so I may deviate from the norm.

Anyone remember the famicon transformers game where you were ultra magnus and got your ass handed back to you in the first five seconds of the game? That was fun. =)

Yeah I just loved starting thatone over and over.=P

If they;re using the "new optimus" voice I guess I wouldn't be so bad as was next to impossible to get Peter Cullen back for the the new shows. (probably dude to his Disney contract or maybe his asking price is astronimical) But then again all these new shows arent the original G1 Primes anyway so 'm glad he didn't.

I suppose the one thing that sours me to the thought of this game is that it follows the dopey Mini-con/pokemon/gotta catch 'em all premise of Armada. If they'd just made a simple "defeat the Decepticon menace" game I'd be a lot more enthusiatic.

I guess us "old-schoolers" will be waiting forever. Seems like we are the minority when it comes to those who want the original flava. Damn shame too. I for one would never be embarrassed to say that I would pay more than $50 for an OG Transformers game. Then again, I've been known to walk around Disney World with Goofy Ears on so this wouldn't be much of a stretch for me.

There's the G1 transformers game they made for the PS2 in japan but concidering the lengths you have to go through to play it and the fact that it's playability is supposed to be kinda lacking makes it a bit of a downer, on the other hand the number of G1 characters in it ALMOST makes me wat to get it.

Hehe, I never said I wasn't going to buy the $70 masterpiece, did I? I just feel embarassed by my lack of fidelity to the idea of being cheap

Gary Chalk has been the voice of Optimus since Beast Wars and the 4 or 5 versions that have followed and yet I'll still always consider Peter Cullen THE voice of Optimus Prime. BTW, the rumor mill is saying that Peter will voice Optimus in the upcoming CGI/Live Action Transformers movie. Frank Welker is supposed to be on for Megatron as well.

To the person considering the 20th Anniversary Prime toy, I'll just say it's absolutely worth every penny. You'll never own a cooler transformer. The new alternator line is very cool as well (the japanese line is called binaltech and its even cooler because it uses die-cast parts).

Original post updated with details (and a link to pictures) from the Transformers 20th Birthday Party in NYC.

I see an Optimus Prime pulling a Pepsi Semi Trailer. When was that made? I had the One at the top in display case 2 it was just a plain Gret Trailer that foled into some strange base.

It was a promotional item, my friend had one that he got from his mom who worked for pepsi, He sold it on ebay for around 200. A few years ago, before the rereleases and new TF information, I got a new old optimus prime for 26 on ebay :). Im looking forward to this game
