so yesterday my sisters boyfriend gets a call from a woman who was supposely a detective and asks for him knowing his name. Then she goes on and says he has been caught trying to get a 13 year old to have sex with him through mocospace but he has never even made a profile to it. Then he denies it and she says that someone could be bouncing off his phone using his web service through their own phone acting as him but with the original number. But the worst part is shes states that he will get prosecuted and go to jail for 15 years unless he poses as a 13 year old girl through mocospace and trys to snag some pedophiles trying to sleep with him for 90 hours and on top of that he has to pay this detective 500 dollars. so hes freaking out if he should not trust her and later on turns out to be true or actually pay her and get scammed. the funny thing is he asks for her name but she doesn't give it up and she only wants to be contacted through texts so nothing in writing can she be trusted and can she realy have proof for something he didnt do. sorry if this thread doesn't belong here im new to this.:wall:

UPDATE: so today my sister text her for a name and her badge number she then replies 5 hours later saying she took long because of the time zones.she gives us a her name and badge number and the place she works at we check it out online and everything seem legit until we called in to ask if we can speak to a detective but all we have is a badge number so we give the department the number and name and they tell us theres no record we told them it was a female and she says she works there. The department says there is no record and asks us for the number of the detective and puts us on hold she then says that there is no record of this phone number and the badge number we gave was for a male officer that has retired four years ago.so now my sister told the department the whole story and is now investigating this turns out this suppose detective number was tracked to south florida and this department is located in north florida. were gunna head to our nearest police station tomorrow to see what else we can do to stop these scammers but for now i want to thank all of you for your help. btw my sisters boyfriend is still freakin out:booty:

but he didn't do anything he doesnt even use his phone to surf the web how can they accuse him of something he didnt do and say that they have proof and why doesn't the detective give him a name when he asked for it im guessing this could just be a scam but to make sure i need some more advice from my fellow caggers.

It's a blatant scam. A variation of the hitman scam in fact:
http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/hitman.asp

There are many obvious flags (Here's one: What kind of legitimate detective would demand a bribe and some menial task in exchange for acquittal of a serious crime?). It's rather simple to see the scammer's objectives: 1. She gets your friend to pay $500 2. Your friend does the contacts random people over that web site for 90 hours. 3. Scammer demands info of all the people your friend contacted 4. Scammer repeats the process with the others.

The simplest thing to do? If your friend has the scammer's phone number, then they should contact the local police.
Sorry, he's got to do everything the detective says. It's the law. Go tell him to do it, and come back and post the result.
Haha I agree, rules are rules. If you get a random phone call and a stranger tells you that you need to do something, you have to do it. Tell him to pay her $1000 just to be safe.

first off check his computer history to make sure hes not lying about it ( because you never know). if youre sure hes telling the truth then go to the police. give them then number of the person who called and tell them everything that happened. could be someone just playing a prank or it could be someone scamming.

my main deal with this is they know his nae and number so theres a chance they know where he lives so it could be someone locally trying to screw with him which means they could show up and try something in person. best thing he can do is get as much info as possible names /numbers/ date of call and what the call was about and talk to the cops. if he hasnt done anything hes got nothing to fear by going to them for help.

theres also the possibility he has or does chat up on kiddie sites and someone posing as a kid got his name info and number and are now trying to blackmail him basically pulling a chris hanson but trying to get paid off of it.

It's pretty easy to get some random person's name and number, as a scammer could find victims listed in the phone book, or he gave his info to a company who later sold it in a list.

Also, consider how quickly the scammer came up with a backup story when the guy mentioned that he had no account at whatever web site she mentioned. At first, it was "ZOMG UR A PERV at , CONFESS!," then when the victim doubted the scammer's story it became "Oh, well, someone else must have been using your connection by , oh, but you still gotta pay me or else."

thanks for the replies guys i got her number from my sister so now how do i report it and what do i say i just told my sisters boyfriend to not worry about and dont answer any more texts and by the end of the month hes cancelling his phone and going somewhere else.

Well now that you got the number it's time to post it on 4chan

Haha, from the update it sounds like they were looking all over their house for an old speeding ticket for the name and badge number on the ticket to give to you.
