CAGiversary!

I put up an auction at the end of December for a sealed copy of Eternal Sonata with the faceplate set, guide, and original OXM demo of the game. A CAG ended up winning, and after New Year's, on January 2nd, I shipped him the package to his address in Chicago and PMed him with the delivery confirmation number.

A week went by and I received a PM from him saying that he still hadn't received anything, and that the DC showed that it had been delivered...in Virginia Beach. 900 miles from its actual destination in IL. The box had no old labels or anything like that on it that could have confused someone about the address. Just a standard brown box with the address on it. The zip code it was mailed to (60616) looks nothing like the Virginia Beach zip code where it was delivered (23450), so it wasn't a matter of simply transposing a digit, either.

After checking my receipt to make sure it had the correct zip code listed (it does), I fired off an email to USPS customer support, and followed up with a phone call the next morning. The bewildered CSR that I spoke to gave me a case number and flagged my case for "immediate action," then told me I'd be updated within the next business day.

Sure enough, today they called back, with no additional knowledge whatsoever. Between the various people I spoke to, I was given the theories that:
 • It could have been scanned incorrectly and shown Virginia Beach as its destination instead of merely a stop along the way
 • It could have been stuck to another package
 • It could have been next to a different package that needed to be marked to be forwarded to VA and had a sticker slapped on by mistake
None of these explained why my package went anywhere near Virginia in the first place since it's a straight line from Connecticut to Chicago, and none were particularly helpful, so I finally just asked for the number to the VA Beach post office so I could try dealing with them directly.

I spoke with a man who, after laughing quite a bit, was able to confirm that the package had been delivered to their post office, and he somehow knew that it had ended up being put into a post office box. He wasn't allowed to check the list of names of P.O. box holders himself, so he gave me the name of someone who could. I called back and spoke with that man, named Dallas, and he took my number and told me he'd let me know whatever he could. Not having heard anything for a few hours, I called back later, and, after laughing as well, he told me that there was indeed a P.O. Box holder with a similar name, but that he did not have the authority to look into anyone's P.O. box or to remove a package from a P.O. box, and that there was no guarantee that a similar name means that he's the one who ended up with it. He took my number once again and told me that if someone turns in the package as having been delivered to them incorrectly or if it turns up somewhere in the back outside of an actual P.O. box, he will give me a call.

So basically, I'm left with absolutely nothing else to do but hope that it turns up. The latest USPS CSR I spoke to basically told me that since it wasn't insured, there's absolutely nothing I can do. I'd assume that the zip code showing up correctly on the receipt would be good for something, but apparently that gets me nowhere. I don't want to screw over the buyer, either, so I'll be refunding him in full, but that leaves me with less than I originally started with, since I lose not only the items themselves, but, to add insult to injury, the eBay fees involved with the auction.

Since that's a pretty shitty situation to end up in, I'm wondering if anyone else has been "lucky" enough to experience a similar situation, and if there's any solution anyone can think of or something else that I can try. I feel like I've exhausted most of my options here, but I guess it never hurts to ask, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'd really love to hear them

If nothing else, at least I've learned that it's always worth insuring packages in the future, or just using UPS and their included insurance and more up-to-date tracking.

that is insane lol sorry OP that is the craziest thing I've ever heard. I thought Canada Post was bad but that takes the cake

So they essentially said, "Yeah, its there. Yea, we know its not supposed to be there. No, we're not going to take it out?" What the fuck is that?

I dont get why they wouldnt be able to take it out of the PO Box...Did you talk to the postmaster of that office? if not try that...I know at my office the PO Boxes are right there easily accesible to any postal employee where you can see everything and usually when there is a package then a slip is left in the slot since the boxes never fit in there
So they essentially said, "Yeah, its there. Yea, we know its not supposed to be there. No, we're not going to take it out?" What the fuck is that?
Yeah, that was pretty much my reaction. If I understood correctly, they know it's in a PO box but don't know which PO box, and they're not allowed to go through other people's stuff to figure out which one.

And thanks, Jedi. I'm not sure whether or not that's who the Dallas guy I spoke to is, but I'll try calling tomorrow and asking for the postmaster.

sorry to hear about that OP. for the amount of volume the USPS gets, id say they do a pretty good job of processing everything correctly. its unfortunate when things like this happen though.

Try getting the buyer to hound them too. If you both just keep calling them they're bound to do something.

a supervisor and most definately a Postmaster should be able to check into anything ...and if a package is misdelivered they have no reason not to fix it if they can...otherwise try to find out what district they are in and then call them...that will get their butts in gear since the last thing any postmaster wants is district breathing down their neck

Actually the same think happened to me recently. I needed a package delivered to Kansas and it was in Kansas for a day according to the tracking number but then went to Michigan... I don't know what to do either... :whistle2:/

Woah, that's insane. Intriguing story to hear, but ultimately tragic for you. I honestly can't say I've had anything like that happen to me or anyone I know...

As a rule of thumb with my auctions, I insure everything valued above $50 since I can't really float a loss of that cost. I fix the cost of insurance as required so the buyer always pays and all has always been well.

Ouch man. Not exactly related, but a Circut City game (RE4) was getting shipped to me and arrived today. Only problem was a flat package with a gaping hole in the bottom with clear packing tape covering it. Luckily I got a nice person when I called up Circuit City and I shoud have another one coming in 7-14 days. Not sure if someone had sticky fingers or if it just got broken open with shipping, but another USPS sucess story!

Was insurance an option on the auction? If insurance was an option and the buyer neglected to pay the additional dollar and change he should be the one eating the cost... it's there for a reason, you know?

If there was no option to insure in your auction I guess you're out of luck.

Good for you refunding the buyer. I hate sellers who think buyers should eat the cost of shipping errors. And the fact is PayPal would side with the buyer here in a slam dunk. Personally I would have wanted to wait another 2 or so weeks to see if the package eventually got delivered to the buyer before refunding, but if it never made it I would certainly refund.

Anyway it might take a while but I bet it will eventually be returned to the post office by the PO box owner in VA Beach and then get returned to you or finally delivered to the buyer. I'd call the VA Beach office again and let them know it was an eBay sale and you have refunded the buyer so if there is anyway for them to make sure it is returned to sender rather than sent on to the buyer you'd appreciate it.

Also on eBay you can cancel the sale and say 'Item was refunded' or something to that effect. If the buyer agrees to it you get your FVF refunded and he does not get a NPB strike.

Well, I ordered something from NJ (I live in NY), and it was sent Priority Mail. 22 days later (after not updating the tracking info), the package was finally delivered to me yesterday.
Yep, that's what I call reliability. In the future, if I need something fast and secure I'll choose another company. Thanks USPS.

I think what's funny is that I USED to live in VA Beach, but now I live in Chicago! That doesn't have any relevance to the post, but I like to think that the USPS is more interested in me than it really is.

Yeah, I had to send a package to Michigan before X-mas and the buyer contacting me asking what's going on. When I looked up DC online, it said it was in Hawaii. I thought that was interesting. Everything worked out in the end.

Aparently, when the package is on the conveyor belt, another package coming onto the belt can push packages off onto another belt heading for a different city. Nice.

I also have one right now that was to go from Phoenix to Prescott, still inside my own state, but the DC has it in Cali. Le sigh.

Well, I was the buyer in the auction, and since my need for a paypal refund wasn't urgent, I offered to have him send me half the refund now, and then if the package came in the next week or two I could send it back, or he could then issue me a full refund if it didn't...

But shocker of all shockers...today in the mail, there it was, the package...in perfect shape...so he doesn't have to refund me anything...and everyone is happy...well...at least satisfied....

Haha, wow, that is the most random thing in the world. Now I feel kind of bad for leaving the VA Beach postmaster a 5 minute message today. I'm amazed and very happy that it showed up, though.

I think I remember that auction... not sure what the final sale price was but for someone who lost the items and the money, you seem extremely level head. Hell, even if it was a $20 item that was in question, I'd freak.

I don't think I could even type correctly had something like that happened to me.

I've been talking with USPS every day since I found out, and I think staying active has been enough to keep me distracted. I'm sure if I'd ended up sending the refund and given up, the depression would have set in.

I'll blame the crazy holidays. I shipped out something to a CAG in NY and it came back to me, despite someone else shipping to the same address a day or two later.

Did you have to pay shipping again?
I'll blame the crazy holidays. I shipped out something to a CAG in NY and it came back to me, despite someone else shipping to the same address a day or two later.
If the package mysteriously "shows up" and they give you a call I'm willing to drive over there and pick it up for you and return ship it (It's only a few streets away). There is only one post office in 23450 (that I know of) on 24th street. That is weird that he said it went into a PO box because they shut down the ability to get a PO box there last year and funneled everyone to the one on 33rd street.

Anywho, let me know if I can help.

EDIT: read through the entire thread and it looks like everything worked out!
