I suggest you not download the update, it is giving some people the 3 red rings.

I'd avoid it if you can.

*EDIT*

The update seems to be mandatory, so to avoid it would be to stop playing and I'm guessing no one is going to do that. Feel free to post if you have any issues you experience.

*EDIT 2*

Changed title to be a little less Fox News-ish and fear inducing.

So does turning on the system...

Thanks folks I'll be here all night!
Do I have to download it to play on live?

Cuz I've got a date with RSVegas tonight.

And I'd hate to stand her up.
I think it's a mandatory update.

Hi:

I downloaded the update and now EVERY game freezes after 5 minutes of play.

I called Microsoft and they told me I had to clear out some of my old files by turning on the machine and holding down the controller sync button.

Needless to say it did not work.

I was also told this was a very minor update and just added some sort of wireless function for use with Guitar Hero 3.

Has anyone else's 360 gone bad after the update?

Kevin

Dude what doesn't give the system red lights?

I downloaded it no problems. I use my XBox 360 30+ hours a week and have yet to get any system errors and It's been getting close to two years of having it now.

Some people have problems some don't. If I have a system problem I have my Wii/other systems to use for 3-4 weeks.

My friend and several users on GameFaqs are getting bricked consoles. Just stay away as long as you can.

Sure, you might be fine...buy why risk it?

Risk it because playing on Live is the main reason I got a 360.

If I can't play online with my system than I'll have to get another one.

It's a mandatory update that will only be used by a small portion of the 360 audience

Anyway, these things happen with every system update. They also happen randomly without any precursors what so ever. If you own a 360 you have already realized that every day has the risk of the system dying.

I think he is saying wait until Microsoft finds out the update is bricking systems. They will release a another update to correct the screwed up one.

Mine is working fine, no red lights. And I played about an hour of RBS: Vegas after the update.

the update is for the guitar hero wireless controllers. Its not even a major update, don't see how it could cause problems, but to each there own. Mine is still running strong (since my last repair that is :))

Kevin
Did they ever do that with the other updates? I'm just going to risk it and see where it takes me.

Lol. Everything bricks 360s. Download the damned update. If you're that afraid then you should probably not turn your 360 on. At this point that's the only wya that you are 100 percent sure that you won't get red ringed.

PS, tons of people get 3RL every day. Who's to say it doens't happen to coordinate with the update?

mo updates mo problems

mine froze 2x since, but i dunno if it's cause by the update or the 110 degree weather causing it to overheat

Some people are just retarded. Seriously. How many consoles were going to get the 3 rings today anyway? Now when those people download the update and get it shortly after, lets blame the update? Did they fart sometime before the 3 rings too? Did they order pizza too?

DON'T ORDER PIZZA!!! IT GIVES YOU THE 3 RINGS!!!

It's a coincedence. Get over it.

No it is not. My buddy has NEVER had a problem with his XBOX and 5 minutes after the download he can't use it.

Maybe I'd believe it was coincedence, but too many others are getting the same thing.

something is screwed up with either my wireless adaptor or my 360, because im having lots of trouble signing onto live. Then, when i do, it makes me go d/l the update. Then it takes like 10 minutes and as soon as its about to finish it just cancels it and says error.

Holy Hell...

My 360 didn't turn on at all...

Then I realized it wasn't plugged in at all.

People that think it was the update are probably the same ones who believe the Government is responsible for 9/11.

Every time there's an update, there are people crying about it, and every time, everyone DLs the update anyways.

How about someone posts what the update fixes/adds instead?

Give me a break, you could fart wrong and the 360 would pop 3 rings.

I downloaded the update and just left they system do it's thing and I have no problems. I also don't get where people are saying the XBOX 360 logo takes 2 minutes to load. It lasts maybe 3 more seconds than before on start-up but big deal.

The update will break the feature of not being able to see the name of the game on your screen. But to fix it all you need to do is start up a game, quit out of it and then open and close the disc tray and it's fixed.

Don't worry about the update, get it and get online!

Well, I got the update in the morning and it seems to be working fine. Of course, it never tells you what it does so I had to go online to find out.

Yes, haha...you are all so very witty.

Since the update is mandatory I imagine we will all eventually see what happens when we download it. I'll wait another day to see if they can tinker with things.

So does turning on the system...

"No, don't even look at it."

(Yours is better, but I had to chime in.)

They're not going to tinker with things.

This is the update, it's not bricking consoles, it's a coincidence (although, apparently, consoles seem more susceptible with updates. But, with no research, it's just hearsay.)

You're just avoiding the inevitable (the update, not the red rings, though probably that too ).

I've no red rings, but it took quite a while for the 360 to recognize my Marvel Ultimate Alliance game DVD... (after signing on to live and all that fun...) *shrug* This is probably nothing... *knock on wood*, but I don't think the update would be to blame...

Still, mandatory update for wireless guitar support? *shrug*

Wow, did people already forget the other updates that caused RRoD and then had to be patched because the failure rate was so high?

I think it's worth a thread if people are getting fucked up systems from an update.

no wonder MS can get away with broken consoles. some of you guys have the memory of a goldfish (credits go to brak for the goldfish insult ;) )

why are you so angry over there being a possiblity of the update bricking consoles? I know my system was acting fine BEFORE the update. Now it won't play any games for 5 mins before freezing.

some people are retared for thinking there couldn't be a link between bricked consoles and downloading updates. seriously.

Kevin
.
spelling issues aside, my console got bricked over the updated.

And by the looks of things I'm not the only one. Major nelson's site is getting hammered with lots of people reporting the exact same problem as myself.

Why would you be forced to download an update for a game you might not even buy? why not just do a software update when you put the title in?

I wonder what else this update did?

Kevin

I updated my 360. Right after the system shut itself off, I heard it make these weird clicking noises. I read somewhere that sometimes people got clicking noises when they got the ring of death, and I was worried. Eventually, the startup animation came on. However, when it ended and it showed the logo, it didn't do anything. It was like this for 30 seconds before it signed in my profile, but it didn't connect to the internet until about 15 seconds after that. After everything seemed kosher, I turned it off and back on again, and it was more or less normal.

I only watched videos since the update, so I'll have to see if I get that five minutes of gameplay and then freeze problem. If I do get it, I'll be sure to post back right away.

I am just waiting for my 360 to brick. Thats all I need more stress. I cannot believe that PS3s are working fine no problems but 3 out of 4 people I know have had to send their xbox 360s in for repair. I just wish Sony could create games worth playing for the system.

Updates that kill systems great....:bomb:

How is MS poor at supporting products?

They made a design error, they knew it, now they are offering a 3 year warranty on the system and future revisions to the system have fixed the overheating issues.

No. No one forgot. It's just that at this point we've all realized that updates aren't always the things bricking 360s. There are more variables to the 3RL situation. And there are more situations where the updates aren't bricking the 360s.

That last part just pissed me off to no end. Microsoft is not fucking getting away with ANYTHING. You're making it seem like we are all sheep here, sitting back and thinking that our 360s are going to live forever, or actually giving Microsoft sympathy for releaing a console that wasn't up to snuff the time it came out and years after it was first released. We KNOW this shit. We've KNOWN this shit. Microsoft is working to fix the problem, so they haven't gotten away with shit. I hate to throw this number around, I really do, but 1 billion dollars tells you exactly what Microsoft has gotten away with this console generation. So don't fucking tell me, on a forum where a thread about 360 repairs and support has reached 86 pages, that ANYONE on this forum who has bought a 360 is letting Microsoft get away with ANYTHING.

Oh and PS, the PS3 does have some small known errors. Yes they don't happen often but if they do, what can you do? Where can you go? Nothing, nowhere, you're left out in the rain until you can save up 600 more dollars to buy a PS3 .

Oh man I was dying for awhile there.

Anyways, this is a good thread. I'll download the update and report back. I've had this for a year and a couple months, no problems.

No problems here. Even downloaded the Lumines update and no red rings.
