I finally maxed out my 160GB HD still factory in my PS3 finally. Been hearing its decently easy to replace the HD in the PS3. Im just not sure what HD I should be buying if their is a specific one that I should be picking up or not. a 320 should be fine or a decently priced 500. I have a giftcard to amazon so I would be looking to pick something up from there if possible. Any help on which HD I should buy would be greatly appreciated. I hope this is the right thread if not I'll know soon by some CAG saying its not.
Get something like this:

That's the one I have in my PS3 (except mines 320gb.) I purchased a WD Blue, but there was a note in the box that basically said "Surprise! We've upgraded you to Black free of charge!" I haven't had an issue with it, and it works great!

Any standard notebook hard drive with Sata connectors will work just fine. (and pretty much all modern notebook drives have Sata connectors) If you go to a store today and purchase a hard drive that is designed for use in laptops, it will work in your PS3. The desktop hard drives that are larger are the ones that won't work in the PS3.
I heard that hard drives that run at 7200rpm will stop working after couple of months due to overheating. I bought http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DVJJWQ/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller= at Best Buy but price matched amazon.com. It is really easy to swap hdd in the PS3. It takes awhile to backup and restore but it's worth it.
That might have been the case when the PS3 came out, though the heat difference and power usage differences between the WD Scorpio Black and WD Scorpio Blue are negligible.

I've had a WD Black in my PS3 for multiple months and never had any issues with it.

Op I literally just upgraded mine a few hrs ago

Make sure the one you replace it with is a 2.5 inch sata hd, and people say to use 5400 rpm

I used the o e fro. I my old laptop it was fine very easy and no need to format as the ps3 does ititself

I agree with shrike as usual with going for Western Digital drives. I also have a WD Black inside my phat ps3 for 2 years still going strong.
