Hey everyone, I'm looking to pick up a used PS3 60gb system and think I have found a local seller who will let me try out the system beforehand. My question is what should I look for to verify everything is in good workout order, outside of the basic stuff like trying out some games/movies and looking at the cosmetics of the system? Are there any specific things I should know about the PS3 or its functionality?

Everything seems on the up and up (he received it as a gift, no games to play, etc). It comes with all box/packaging/cables and has a BB receipt from earlier this year.

Any help/advice/knowledge you could offer would be much appreciated!

I'd bring along a PS2 game and a PSOne game to try out but I really can't think of anything specific to look for.

Mine was a mint, used 20 gb when I got it and I haven't really had any problems. Sometimes it has issues running Firepro Returns but it's not consistent enough to figure out what the problem could be.

Thanks for the reply. Bringing the PS2 and PSOne games is a good idea. I will have to dig out a couple to try.

Anyone know of a PS2 game that will not play on an 80gb, but plays find on the 60gb?

I would take note of where he stored it. If he kept it in a cupboard, then there is a chance he left it on in the cupboard, and the thing took some excess heat, for a long duration. Capacitors don't like that.

Im looking to buy one from a local selelr too
Last year when my friend bought a 360 from another local seller, he got a problem (the 360 got 3 ring of dead) with the microsoft when hes trying to replace it with a new one since it is registered under the sellers name.
So does the PS3 got anything like this, the whole PSN thing are they registered under the console's barcode? or every person can make his own account without a ps3 ?

Thanks for the tips everyone! I went over and checked out the system tonight and it was in MINT condition. This guy was telling the truth when he said it had been taken excellent care of and barely played. I checked out some PSOne & PS2 games I brought over and things worked great. Ended up scoring it for $300! Brought it home and got it all set up on the network too. A question for everyone.

Do you think it is worth it to do a full reformat of the PS3 HD? It says it is a 3-4 hour process. Will the system files still be there to boot up, etc? I figured it might be a good idea to completely wipe the system but wondered what everyone else thought.

if u dont want his crap on it, then yeah doit, the ps3 has no problems being on for a long time.

good deal on the $300.

Yea, they guy wanted $350, but I offered $300 cash so it was all good.

I might still reformat the system, but there really wasn't much of anything on the drive. I think he only played one PS3 game he borrowed from a friend and some older PS2 games. I wish I would have just full formatted it yesterday, now I DL'd a bunch of demos and installed them and that took a long time so not sure I'll go back for the full reformat.

One other good thing was the guy had the original receipt from the system so I should have some type of warranty protection for a few months. Unfortunately the receipt was too early to qualify for the 5 free BD deals, unless I can figure out a work-around for that.
