Viva Pinata DS announced

nice! viva was one reason i was thinking of finally getting a 360 (aside from that hello game everyone keeps talking about) but ill try it out on my ds 1st! off topic, is that hhh's king of kings skull?
Does this give hope for Banjo on the VC?
I really hope so.

Viva Pinata was one game that really made me want to get a 360. Here's hoping it's done right on the DS.
off topic, is that hhh's king of kings skull?
yes sir.

Back on topic, did ANYONE see this coming? I mean, I would've filed it in the "great idea, never going to happen" category.

Nope, I wouldn't have expected it.

Still, I think MS would do well to publish for other companies' handhelds, though. There's a lot more money in making DS games than in Microsoft trying to make their own portable game system, IMO.

Rare released a few games for GBA even after they were bought out by Microsoft, so that aspect of it isn't that surprising. I just thought that the original game didn't sell very well, so them making another one at all is the biggest shock. I guess they figured they would try again on a system aimed more towards a younger audience, and hopefully get better sales because of it.

Everyone should at least give this game a rent. I love this game on the 360 (rather shocked to see it hitting the DS but hey) hopefully they will have some new pinatas to gather and breed in this one that weren't in the 360 making it worth the purchase :).

Rare has been working with Nintendo handhelds for awhile under their mighty overlords. I would imagine Viva would do better on the DS than it did on the 360.

There is too much paperwork to sort out for Rare classics to go to the VC but I wouldn't completely rule out a Halo DS.

Microsoft will make some serious money off this if it sells good which it most certainly should considering 75% of the people that watch Viva Pinata own a DS/DS Lite, probably more.

Not surprising to me that Rare is developing for the DS since Microsoft has no portable. Hell, Microsoft allowed their Mech Assault franchise to be ported to the DS. Money is money.

All that being said, I will definitely check this out.

Yes. Because Shane Kim said there was a good chance it would happen.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3157148

"A Kameo or a Viva Pinata on a DS makes a lot of sense in a lot of ways from a franchise perspective," Shane Kim told 1UP last week at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas. Kim, a Corporate Vice President for Microsoft Game Studios and Phil Spencer, head of Studio Development for Microsoft Game Studios, reinforced Microsoft's commitment to Rare's Pinata-stuffing IP, despite lukewarm performance at retail. "[Viva Pinata] is the beginning of an IP that will be a pillar for Microsoft Game Studios for a long time," Spencer said.

It wasn't a definate "Yes, its coming", but this announcement isn't completely out of left field based on previous comments.

hey! has your 360 encountered a red ring??? No problem try these MS games on your DS!!!!!

MechAssault!!!! Viva Pinata!!!!! don't wait for Refurbished system!!! while on hold with MS Support, plant and maintain a pinata garden!!!! Play the mating game!!! Tired of waiting for your 5th system to be shipped back destroy Mechs like they were MS support analysts!!

Coming to a DS near you! Viva Pinata, Already out! MechAssault!

I'm so happy. Viva Pinata and Blue Dragon taunt me, but I can't justify a system purchase when there are only two games on it I want to play. I always thought Viva Pinanta made more sense on a Nintendo platform (as does Blue Dragon). Viva Pinata's graphics and play-style are light and fluffy, a style Nintendo fans definitely embrace.

I'm sold. Absolutely sold.

Yes, as announced by our boys at the San Diego Comic-Con yesterday, Viva Piñata on DS is a reality. That's three VP announcements in as many weeks. Told you there was a resurgence happening.

As this one's being developed in-house we'll have a full section in the Games area when enough details and assets are available, but for now, here's the first official screenshot (click the icon above) and a rundown of what you can expect...
This is a full-size Viva Piñata game in your pocket, featuring not only the entire range of paper beasts from the Xbox 360 title but also a few new ones thrown in to spice things up for those familiar with the established cast.
You'll also be given free rein with an expanded selection of tools and tool actions, upgraded forms of the Journal and Encyclopedia, and brand new game modes such as Sandbox (for full and easy access to your favourite Piñatas) and Episodes (tying in more closely to the TV series and allowing fans of the show to spend quality time with familiar faces).
But one of the biggest changes is obviously the control method, with stylus input transforming the way in which you interact with your menagerie. Design, nurture, instruct, protect and care for your garden and animals through direct touch. The DS WiFi service also lets you send prime Piñata specimens to your friends, making the act of parading your Doenut around in a humiliating pirate outfit easier than ever.
And there you have it. More details as and when they arrive. When it comes to writing up the main game section we'll probably recycle most of the text above, so I hope you enjoyed it. Viva Piñata on DS - roaming your way soon!
This one of those moments where everything feels right in the world, where something that just makes sense actually became a reality. Hopefully after it finally comes out we'll all be saying this was how it should have been all along.

meh I dont know if I'll say that, I'm happy to see it coming to the DS don't get me wrong and I will be buying it. But I'm glad it came to my 360 also I still play the game to this day and I bought it on release so I wouldn't have wished it to happen any other way than it has :).

Fair enough. Bit of an exaggeration, anyhow. I don't have a 360, but played Viva Pinata at a 360 demo station at Virgin for a while, at least an hour. Loved it, but I remember thinking the controls were a little tough to get used to, where something like a mouse or touch pad system would have made it.

Actually once you get use to it its very fast most your tools are accessable from the D pad the main problem you run into is sometimes finding the trouble pinatas in time but thats more due to the large number of pinatas than anything else really. It should translate well to the DS though I certainly wouldnt try to put it on the PSP. Graphically it would work but control wise lacking a second analog would make it annoying on the PSP(especially for me given I used it to rotate the camera alot to keep track of things).

Whoa shit.
I wonder if this will be out this year? Yeah It's rare, but still, I have no titles on my wishlist this year outside of Phoenix Wright and the new MMZero.

Great news. This gives me another reason to hold off on a 360. I have always wanted to play this and thought it looked similar to Animal Crossing.

This really shouldn't hold anyone off on buying a 360. 360 has a lot of good games on it and I highly reccommend it to anyone. I also reccommend the Wii also both are really fun :). Oh and Sipwak I agree I don't think MS will ever port a game to a sony system. I honestly think starting to bring some of their titles to the DS is another way to take away profit from sony's gaming division. I mean if you can get some of the best xbox titles and get all of nintendos titles on one handheld then why would you even look at purchasing a PSP?

I mean I own a PSP and its still hard to find good titles coming out right now save like 3 or 4 the rest are generic japanese RPG number 44(given a few exceptions).

I still want a 360, but this kind of a title seems to make much more sense on the DS. I'm still not entirely clear on how Viva Pinata is played exactly, but from what I've gleaned, it sounds like a good fit and will probably sell much better than it did on the 360.

A couple months ago after I felt like I had finally overcome a particularly bad period in my life, I decided to treat myself to the Japanese golden PSP (heavily influenced by South Park, I am). I came on CAG and traded to get some of the best titles that the PSP supposedly offered -- Daxter, Gurumin, Exit, Pinball Hall of Fame, WTF, Katamari. And when I had them all gathered around me, I just didn't care. The PSP was too big and fragile to carry around like my DS. In the end, I'm listing it on eBay in the next couple of days, partly to get rid of a dust-collector and maybe mostly to make money while I'm unemployed.

It's just pretty bad when you go to look at upcoming games for both handhelds, the PSP list is so brief and stale as hell.

Thats kind of how I feel now. There are 3 metal gear games and 1 comic with another coming soon. Tons of remakes of older games which are sequels to even older games that has me wondering if I'll even get the plotline in half of them and wondering if its worth it to try. I'm not as worried about the fragile state of the system I'm generally very careful with my gear.

My main issues is sorting the good from the bad theres "so much" mediocre stuff on the system that its like finding a needle in a haystack to find something I want. Where as last year it was amazing how many good titles the thing had coming out for it.

Looks like Big N and M$ realized the potential of working together, Rare did Diddy Kong Racing, and Microsoft let Mechassualt be ported to the DS. This may be the start of something promising as M$ begins to realize the cash cow that the DS is. I will be getting this game and maybe future Microsoft properties on the DS. And this coming out of left field, I think it was expected, it was just a matter of what game, Rare has been making GBA games and they even announced they would be developing 2 DS games. If this does sell well (doesn't hurt that it fits the standard DS title type) I expect some more Microsoft titles to show up on the DS.

Those achievements couldn't possibly be the same thing, unless you can Wi-fi info over to your Live account or something.

I'm pretty sure its just an ingame unlockables qualifier

I honestly think this game will play better then on the 360. (Well, hopefully). Hopefully touch screen makes things more fun/easier to navigate.

Plus, WiFi should be good too!

You're one of the old Animal Crossing people aren't you? I can pretty much assure that if you like AC you will like this. It is a little different in that, while open-ended in one respect, it is a little more goal-driven than Animal Crossing. One the 360, anyway, there are the achievements to obtain (looks like they are "emulating" those on the DS version). But beyond that, you can work towards obtaining all the pinata, which I did. Above and beyond that you can maximime your gardner level by doing EVERYTHING in the game. You gain experience points when you grow a new plant, attract a new pinata to your garden, romance a pinata, get a master romancer award, etc. So to MAX your stats you need to get every pinata, romance every pinata, and get master romancer (basically get 7 of them) for each one. That would be quite a bit of work but is there for the completist. On the 360 I went for all the achievements (still only lacking the 50 hour one though I must be close) and then all the pinatas, then I kind of lost interest in it. But I'd do it all over on the DS version so that's cool. Hopefully there's enough new stuff in there to keep me interested.

Another reason for MS to put this on the DS I'm sure they hope to ensnare some DS/Wii or DS/PS2/GC people to consider getting a 360 for the 360 VP and the new Viva Pinata Party Animals game coming out this winter. While this game is suited for the DS, the 360 version is visually stunning. The only problem will be that it appears the DS version will have MORE content, so it will seem a step back going from DS -> 360 in terms of gameplay. But hopefully there's a true VP sequel in the works too - maybe if this DS version sells well, that will happen for sure.

Wouldn't that be some insane shit if somehow..someway...they made some DS games compatible w/ the 360?!.. yes yes that's all in a dream..but the thought of THAT .. ::changes pants::

I thought of that when I was typing my post above but I figured it wasn't even worth mentioning as it will never happen ;).
