I've been trying to find good deals on VOIP for about a month now

I've narrowed it down to vonage, or packet8
packet8 set up fee is 49.90 and 19.95/mo
and vonage is 71.38 and 24.99/mo

i really hate the activation fee, other then that i am leaning toward packet8

if anyone has an other suggestions i am open to them
also i was planning on getting my dsl thru verizon

that should work right?
or would there be a problem with verizon not having a signal going to my phone line and therefor some lame excuse for not giving me dsl

any ideas would be appreciated

thanks :)

I have heard that Verizon is starting to offer "naked" DSL (DSL without phone service), but generally speaking they (and most other telco's) won't provide it. I currently have a VOIP line with cable. I tried to get DSL but couldn't without first getting a traditional phone line. Also, if you can get just DSL you can expect to pay more than if you were getting it bundled with phone service (for the DSL portion anyway).

When I signed up for Vonage in March, I called them and talked to a customer service rep. I told them I was considering between Vonage and AT&T's VOIP, and wanted to know what specials they had.

Much to my surprise, they knocked off the activation fee, gave me a free first month, and only charged me 9.95 for shipping the router, all without any haggle.

Suffice it to say, give them a call, you might be surprised. As for Vonage, it's a very good quality phone, and you get a lot of features that would cost you an arm and a leg through your local phone company. One thing of note, I don't know what causes it, but phone calls through my phone are a lot louder than they used to be on a land line. Previously, I had to turn my phone up all the way just to hear anybody, now I hold the phone a little distant from my ear.

If you are looking for good deal and great quality I posted a message a short while ago in the deals forum for SunRocket VoIP:

The jist is $199/annual plan ($16.58/month). No acivation or cancellation fee. And if you cancel you get the money you didn't use back. They give you two free phones and offer practically the same service as Vonage except for Soft Phone and one or two other small features.

They start you with two numbers and have recently implemented being able to have two different area codes which is fantastic. I highly recommend checking them out. There customer service is a lot better than Vonage supposedly too... but I never had Vonage and can't confirm that. I have had it for a bit now and the experience has been great. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. There are a lot of companies and its tough to figure it out sometimes...

I am using SunRocket and it works great. I did have a problem when the Comcast (my ISP) DNS servers went down, but the tech guys at SunRocket helped me fix it.

I've had them for about six months now and I'm very pleased. I used to have POTS service from Verizon. I was paying 50.00 a month for just local with a few services after you include the taxes and regulatory fees. My vonage bill is now like 16.50 a month. The sound quality is great, you can rarely tell a difference and if you can, pause the torrent downloads ;). I got my parents to sign up and a co-worker and they're all happy as well. My only gripe about switching is that it took about a month to get my number ported over, but that had more to do with Verizon than Vonage. Overall I'm a happy customer. If anyone is thinking about joining up, I can send you a referral and you get a free month of service I believe. Send me a PM if interested.

I have sunrocket at the 199.00 a year plan and I think it works fine but it sounds like a cell phone when talking and there is white noise in the background. Also, took quite some time before they set up my incoming calls (only outgoing was active). Still recommended for the free phones and cheap price if you don't mind the sound quality difference.

My sound quality has been good. As far as incoming outgoing calls, mine worked from the day I plugged it in. I didn't port numbers over or anything.

But I think the best aspect of SunRocket (for new folks) is that you can try them and see if you like them without getting penalized. No activation no cancellation fee. And if you go with the $199 deal they will refund the money for any unused time if for some weird reason you don't like the service.

I got vonage and so far I have no complaints - I would buy the startup (activation) kit from bestbuy since it's free after rebates (ordering through vonage was around $65). A cool thing vonage has is if you recommend it to someone and they sign up, you get 2 free months and the person who signs up gets a free month. Shoot me a PM if you decide to go w/ vonage.

Also, if you are transfering your number and it takes longer than 20 days, submit a complaint and they'll probably give u 1-2 months free (it took me almost 2 months so they gave me 2 months free since i couldnt use the service till my number transfered over). The customer service dept was a plus too.

Yeah, referrals are hot these days. SunRocket just rolle done out that gets you gift certificates to Best Buy or Amazon and the sign-upper gets free Uniden phones that are pretty high quality.

Whats the deal with buying Vonage equipment from Best Buy though. When I was researching it appears that if you cancel you have to return that equipment? I am not sure, do you know for sure?

I just signed up with Vonage a couple of weeks ago - yep, free activation and free first month right now (you do have to pay $9.95 shipping for the router.)
Seems to work okay for me so far. Fifteen bucks a month for 500 minutes - which is way more than I'd ever use.

Yeah Vonage has some pluses...first month free...is that just signing up or with a code? But there are things like that, 500 minutes for ~$15 that I was like, huh? SunRocket has unlimited US canada calling for ~$16.

i was looking around and actually talked to someone from sunrocket and if you click on the phone that the parrot is sitting on on the main page you get a coupon code for the free phones with sign up and it/may not change deals for oyu... incase anyone else is looking :)

and THANKS TO YOU ALL

Hahha....thats awesome. Good find Chimpian. That is the same deal as the previous promo codes and the referral....$199, 2 phones, 2 lines...etc.....
