Vote by mail

Does anyone do the vote by mail thing? I signed up for it when I registered in California since I don't have a car. I received my ballot yesterday.

I'm able to mail it in anytime between now and November 4th, or I can deliver it to a polling place on election day (defeats the purpose, eh?) or to a "vote mobile" at a variety of public libraries.

I'm certain I'm voting for Obama, but I haven't lived here too long and I still need to learn more when it comes to candidates for local office.

Not that his has anything to do with voting by mail but I find this pretty interesting. I grew up in LA and went to high school in Southern Illinois. How's the culture shock?

It's a pretty big change. To be fair, the city I live in is not a whole lot bigger than Springfield, although I'm mere miles from Riverside which is much bigger. LA is like a whole new world.

I've been out here for a little over a year and a half and I love it. I'm still not used to the beaches/ocean (even though that's an hour drive), palm trees, and I still feel somewhat awestruck when in LA.

After living in central Illinois for 22 years and dreaming of living out here, it still feels somewhat surreal. I could never move back.
I wouldn't live in SoCal for 100,000 a year.
It depends on where in So Cal. Not all of us are left wing lunatics (look at me!). Besides No Cal is much more liberal than So Cal.

In So Cal, we still have republican majorities in Orange and San Diego Counties. LA has a democrat majority, but its not as large as in San Fran.

Traffic sucks in LA, but is much better in OC and San Diego. Weather is insanely awesome and there's never a shortage of things to do. Of course, being able to afford a house is another matter... Even with 100,000 per year, you may not be able to afford one :)

...oh and about the original post: of course I mail in absentee ballots. Why would I waste my time to go to a balloting location and wait in line?

Crowded, congested, polluted, trendy, expensive, vain, crowded, self important, gangs, traffic, and crowded.

Nice weather though.

For the most part, those are all stereotypes that turn out to be largely untrue.

It's funny when people confuse "SoCal" with Compton and The OC.

I admit I have never lived there, but I hate visiting. I was there in August for a week and I couldn't wait to get out.

Don't forget medical marijuana in California. It's like going to the candy store. My buddy got a card and he's in and out like he's grabbing take out Chinese.

I stayed a few summers in Oceanside and Carlsbad around 1990.

I remember playing Raiden, Operation: Wolf, Double Dragon II and some random wrestling game with a huge button a lot.

One summer, a man was euthanized at the intersection leading to the apartment complex my mom lived in.

The street leading from the apartment complex to the mall was supposedly controlled by a gang. They didn't bother me while walking through in the afternoon.

I did hear one kid screaming, "Help me. I've been kidnapped." one time. My sister and I thought it was funny. I'm sure it worked out well for him.

I guess California was the dangerous version of Oahu and Maui.

I'm sure it is safer nowadays.
