Warhawk: Operation Omega Dawn (expansion pack)

Thomas96

CAGiversary!
Warhawk has had skirmishes erupting on the Sony PlayStation Network since August and this December, the conflict will get a bit more intense as Sony prepares to launch the official expansion pack. Buckle up because Warhawk's Operation Omega Dawn is about to get the drop on you.

Operation Omega Dawn gets its name from the single new map that it brings to the table: The Omega Factory. The Eucadians and the Chermovans are fighting over a high-tech rig called the Omega Factory which houses some very sweet goodies. Your duty is to pick your side and secure the area.

Set in a night battle which makes the area even more treacherous, players will find themselves trying to outgun and outfox the opposite team in order to gain control of the map's crown jewel: the KT-424 Combat Dropship. Like the name suggests, one pilot, six soldiers and a ground vehicle can fit all at once in this baby. Use it wisely to gain an edge over the opposition.

And if you think that the Combat Dropship is a sitting duck with only transport purposes in store, you might have to learn the hard way that it hosts a MBEC-3 Heavy Support Cannon. The MBEC-3 packs some serious sting, so beware of it. Here's a more info from the press release:

Omega Factory battlefield includes 5 new map layouts featuring advanced building complexes and huge industrial towers.
The 5 large layouts from the original battlefields have been modified to include the KT-424 Combat Dropship.
All this in one single download from PlayStation Network this December
We'll give you an update when this PlayStation Network DLC has an exact date of release announced. Until then, keep it here with us

-omg.. I was wishing that the game had a drop ship, and here it is. I can't wait to play the new map.
I wonder how easily destroyed the dropship is. 7 (8 if somebody can sit in the tank) person kills would rule.
Shit, didn't think of that. Must be able to take a beating, but yeah taking one down would get you some decent pointage.

Battlefield's blackhawks/transporters might as well show up as flying pots of gold if you happen to be sitting in an AA turret. With Warhawk's crazy-accurate missile launchers, I expect a pretty short life expectancy on these dropships.

Any mention of how much this is going to cost?

its about time.

And i REALLLLLLY hope this is .99-1.99 or FREE.

Seriously warhawk is very light imo for the price we all paid for the game.

Night time fighting will be very cool.

I sort of want more wideopen land areas where troop battles and vehicle battles are used more. Hell maybe a NO WARHAWK level/map its really hard to get more then 5-6people vs5-6 people fighting each other all at once in the same area.

It sounds like the new plane will have a gun turrent manned by another person. this is very cool. although expect the plane to be slow and heavyarmored.

should be fun come dec... hoping it will be early dec and not late dec.

I don't expect the map pack to be free... but considering that we didn't get a single player game...definitely justifies a free map pack. But its better that its free that way everyone can have access to the new map and drop ship.

I like the idea that this one will be a night battle. And also that certain configurations of the map will be larger then anything we've already seen.

Waiting for the next patch 1st, but this sounds interesting.
But its better that its free that way everyone can have access to the new map and drop ship.
That's actually a pretty good indication that it might be free, since they mentioned that the old maps would be revised to feature the dropship. Of course, they could always force separate servers for non-expansion players, but I'm optimistic.

Oh I'd hate for them to do that.. (split servers) It wasn't good for Motorstorm, and Resistance. Because the whole point is to generate interest in the game [which has been going strong] If they want to make money they should maybe repackage the game with the editional maps for a new Sku, for new Warhawk players. There's a lot of new ps3 owners, so you might can get some of them to jump on the Warhawk ship... or drop ship!

I was re-reading this :whistle2:

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/10/22/warhawk-v12-patch/

I'm guessing that Omega Dawn will be available when patch 1.2 hits (i.e. warhawk store).

The article mentions "The Warhawk Store is also going to be enabled in v1.2. This allows players to purchase Warhawk content, Booster Packs, etc from within Warhawk, rather than going through the XMB and then to the store – this is mainly for convenience."

Just speculation but I think Omega Dawn = booster pack.

It also says, " * Booster Pack status display at join game list."

So I'm guessing it is going to be seperated from the normal game like the other titles have done in the past.

Also something about " * 5 New layouts." Nothing more on that, wonder what that is refering to... Unless it means the Omega Dawn map series.

I think the 5 new layouts are for everyone. Hopefully this patch gets here in the next 2-3 weeks and clears it all up.

I think that's referring to the new variation of each existing map that they show screenshots for in the post. (Destroyed Capitol: Garden Showdown, etc.)

Edit: Whoops, here's the official mention:

And of course some new layouts – as you’ve seen from the images scattered throughout this post!
We have found that while a lot of players like playing the really large games, there was a pretty big segment that was playing smaller games. With that trend, we wanted to rig some new layouts that are more geared for smaller games; 4 to 8 players. The new layouts are:

* Eucadia: High City
* Island Outpost: Standoff
* The Badlands: South City
* Destroyed Capitol: Garden Showdown
* Archipelago: Close Corridors

Let me just say that the shot with the two dropships firing at each other is completely awesome. It's like a couple of flying battleships. It makes me wonder how fast these things can move, though. Is this likely to be a common occurrence? If they're moving that slowly, won't that make them sitting ducks for warhawks and missile turrets?

Sort of makes me wish the titans in BF2142 had ship-to-ship guns.

For someone that loves to sit on the roof of a building and hunt warhawks with a rocket launcher, I'm glad to see dropships are coming to the game. :D

I bet they charge very, very little for this. As damage control to placate people that have been outside Incognito with torches and pitchforks for months.

Wow. $8 huh. I think I'll go with metaly on this and just pass.

I really was hoping that with all the initial problems that we'd get a discounted price. Oh well.

$8 is fine with me. That new level looks awesome.
Apparently the dropship will only be added to the one new layout they're giving each of the old maps
Actually he said the dropship is being integrated into the largest levels of each map. How they're going to do this between the people who paid $8 and people who didn't is a mystery to me.

I'm thinking that there will be servers for those who own the expansion... and servers for those who don't. That's really the only logical way they can go about segmenting those who have purchased and those who have not (I think that's the most logical way at least...)

Really looking forward to the expansion!

Yeah it says HERE, " * Booster Pack status display at join game list."

I don't see anything wrong with $8.

I mean look at R:FoM. You can get 1 new map for $5, or two for $8 cuurrently.

Here, you are getting one new map, plus a new vehicle, and new variations to the old maps.

I'm all for paid content if I think I'm getting my money's worth. If Resistance set the precedent at $5 a map, though, that's unfortunate. Plus, like StrandedBrit said, Warhawk had a pretty rough launch, and it took months for them to sort out all the issues. Even a tiny discount would be a nice consolation.

Also, just to make another 2142 comparison, I recently got the Northern Strike booster pack ($10 for the equivalent of 3 maps with multiple layouts each and 2 new vehicles), and almost nobody plays it. Granted, the game and booster have been out a lot longer than Warhawk, but I wonder how easy it'll be to find expansion servers a few weeks after it comes out.

Uh, no. It's $5 for the two maps included in the second map pack or the bundle including both map packs, four maps total, for $8.

I HATE expansion servers. I guess it really depends on how much more fun having the new ship is going to be because I personally don't think new maps really add much to games unless you get a LOT all at once for cheap. If you can spice up the gameplay and situations then that adds to the value. NS didn't add to much gameplay wise to make it that much better then vanilla personally.
Uh, no. It's $5 for the two maps included in the second map pack or the bundle including both map packs, four maps total, for $8.
That is even a better example, breaking it down like that. I didn't type "map pack", but only map before plus some more errors.

So that means $2.50 per "MAP". Since this is the first upgrade, then it is only fair to compare Warhawk to R:FoM's first pack.

yeah, but remember this one map is probably twice the size of those two R:FOM maps collectively.

Can this game ever have a single player campaign? Call of Duty 4 has a good single player campaign, but I don't even want to play it... Warhawk, I just can't see myself every playing this offline 1 player.

What, you mean you don't like just running around a huge island by yourself?

I don't expect this to ever have a campaign mode. It would be nice if they could add some bots for offline deathmatching/CTF/etc., but it would mostly be a consolation. I don't think I'd even play that too much.

The only way bots would be any good is if they were of the quality that UT has. I doubt that that could've happened with the troubled development of the game.

Some thoughts after watching the dropship video:

- The side cannons look pretty brutal, although it's disappointing that apparently the pilot has to look around and aim (and take his eyes off where he's flying), while the passengers can only help out with those tiny missiles. I did appreciate at the end where the cannons demolished a warhawk in seconds, though.

- Did you notice how just the splash from one of the passenger missiles took a notch off the health bar? With just a couple warhawks shooting tons of swarm missiles at these things, I foresee some very brief flights.

- It would have been nice if they had more than one person logged in for the demo, to show how passengers entering/exiting the dropship would work. It would be awesome if they added in parachutes so you could airdrop people.

- I'm not yet $7.99-impressed.

They said that was the main reason the game was troubled, how do you do good AI with huge levels like Warhawk has? I don't remember the exact examples, but I can't imagine them making it realistic like a human player with all the options/strategic elements to the game.

The one thing I want to see in this game is parachutes. When they eventually add new weapons, I think parachutes would be a nice alternative to chaffing. Sure it would be harder to get kills when people parachute out of their Warhawks before dying, but you could always shoot them while they're floating to the ground. Since it'd be a power-up, it wouldn't be mandatory and not everybody would be doing it.

How about being able to do something like in ID4 where you could deploy as you're being tailed so that the Warhawk becomes a weapon that others have to dodge, even those on the ground? The power-up idea to activate it's a good idea, by making it available once on the map at a time would keep it reasonable. That would be cool to see happen.

I mean when they go and make Warhawk 2... would you like it to have a single payer mode, or straight online. I was saying that these maps are basically maps that were going to be used for the single player mode, as well as online. I was saying I just can't see myself playing Warhawk in a story mode.

- I like your parachutes idea!
Some thoughts after watching the dropship video:
We don't really know if the damage has been tweaked since this video was shot, or if it any of the stats where buffed/debuffed to show things off for this clip.

Bailing is something I don't want them to do. At least not out of the Warhawk. Maybe out of the drop ship would be okay, but bailing out would change the game to much. There are so many kills you would miss out on and you'd lose the gameplay of trying to dodge rockets.

As far as bots, what kind of modes would you want? I don't see how in the world they could program the bots to mimic the online experiance (CTF/Zones and so on).

I meant bailing only as an option for the dropship passengers, not for warhawk pilots and definitely not the dropship pilot. I hate when I'm riding in the transport in 2142, some newbie pilot decides he's reached his destination and before I notice he's ejected, splat.

I'm not hoping for a bot mode myself, nor do I expect they'll be adding one at this point. And, as people pointed out, designing AI and pathfinding for multiplayer this complex would be a nightmare. I guess I was just thinking, "How could they solve the no-single-player problem quickly? Oh yeah, bots!" Didn't really think that one through. :whistle2:#

They did the multiplayer aspect of the game so well that I don't miss the single player portion, as a matter of fact, I don't even consider it a problem - that Warhawk doens'thave a single player mode.

Off-topic, but I really hope they enable an offline mode. It sucks if you want to play splitscreen when your internet is out.

And on the parachute idea, it isn't really necessary for the pilot, but I think it would be really nice for the passenger in the Warhawk.
Speaking of more Warhawk, ESRB rated it for PSP. I didn't see that one coming.
I think that is for the old PS1 game by the same title. Think they are going to offer it as a PSN download to play on the PS3/PSP.

Mr. Jobe is back with some fresh new info-

Hey Everyone!

Many of you may have seen it announced on other websites but...

Our Omega Dawn Booster pack will be available for purchase on the PlayStation Store December 20th World-Wide!!

Also, our free v1.2 game patch will be made available world-wide for all of you on December 19th at 10:00 GMT...that's 2am Pacific. We will also be having a scheduled maintenace window form 10:00 to 16:00 GMT. Basically for us to roll-out the new patch. Please also note that while you will not be able to play Warhawk durring this time, you *will* be able to pull down the patch in preperation for the world-wide game environment to come back online at 16:00 GMT (8am Pacific)

I have also been collecting questions that all of you have asked both here and on the SCEA blog. I will be posting a FAQ early next week.

Will answer 1 question right now though...what are we currently working on?

We are busy in development of our v1.3 game update. Yes its FREE of course (just in case some of you ask). And YES, it includes some new game stuff...not just fixes. Here's a hint...its not new free layouts like we are releasing with v1.2. It has to do with troops. What could it be? :)

I'll be posting more info about it after we release v1.2 and Omega Dawn

As always - Rock on and get ready for the new Battlefield and wicked multiplayer BOSS action of the KT-424 Combat Dropship!

-dylan

To clarify...the Omega Dawn Booster-Pack is $7.99

And we *are* adding some new customization...but that's not what I was talking about.

But we are doing something really cool with the customizations for v1.3...here's a hint.

"Do you know Photoshop?"

:)

...here's another hint...

the photoshop comment didn't have to do with troops...it had to do with aircraft.

:)

Hmmm... a Photoshop "hint" related to the aircrafts... custom paintjobs!?

Just two more days.

Surprised more people didn't try to read into the hints from before. My guess is still custom skins for the warhawks.

played the other day for the first time in months. Forgot how fun the game was, might pick this up.
