Was there ever any deal in CAG history better than that Overstock $20 error?

CAGiversary!
I've only been here for a few months, and thought the $8.96 Circuit City sale would never be beat. Then comes the GODLY Overstock Coupon Error here: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105414

Now I'm wondering were there any deals in the past greater than the Overstock? I was just wondering because I'm kicking myself for not ordering more but now I wonder what is the chance that something better will come along.

Was there an ULTIMATE CAG Deal that could never be beat in the history of CAG or was that Overstock the best?

The CC buy 1 PC game < 19.99 get one free glitch was SWEET!!!

Many people bought a game for $4.99 and got the Prey Collectors Ed ($59.99) for free. In fact many got over $300 in software for less than $50. I didn't though!!!:bomb:

The Overstock one is one of the best that I can remember on CAG. I have gotten better gaming deals in the past, but they pre-date CAG.

Two that really stick out in my mind were the EB trade-in deal when Dreamcast launched, and a TRU trade-in deal towards N64/PSX (I believe). There were also a ton of great deals around 1998-99, during the height of the dot-com era.

This gets my vote as well.

Nothing like free games.

I think I've seen them all, and this one definitely is right up there for the people that got in on it. Anytime you are able to get $20 games for $1.40, it's going to be a sale that is remembered for awhile.

For me, the most memorable are the original $5 Circuit City Clearance and the first GameCrazy Classic Plastic 3 for $15 sale.

I turned the $5 PSU BB coupon into a sum at FYE over a long period of time, which has gotten me a number of dvd box sets for free, so that was pretty good.

Hastings 3-for-1 trade was awesome when combined with the Wal-Mart racing 3-pack, this allowed me to get all new release games for $10....very nice.

As mentioned above, the recent CC PC game glitch was nice, though I'm still holding a few B&W2 expansions :)

This Overstock deal isn't too high on my list only because I didn't exploit it much.....a $16 X-Files season and a $1.40 DQVIII for PS2. If I had taken full advantage, then yeah, it would've been one of the best ever. Still very good though.

That $10 off any game $29.99 and up at Best Buy was an amazing coupon as well, probably because I used it 15 or so times and got a ton of awesome DS games for $20 brand new the day they came out. I remember Castlevania was $20 or $25, Trauma Center was $20, Lost in Blue was $20, the list goes on and on.

I got some ok stuff at Overstock, but I'm with Clariste, I didn't order enough things to make the Overstock deal THAT rememerable. Oh well, a cheap Play and Charge Kit is always nice, no more batteries for me!

Yeah, the original $5 Circuit City clearance was easily the most fun! I remember finding a copy of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for the Xbox along with tons of other games. It has my vote for the best "sale". The overstock.com glitch wasn't a "true" sale though, just an exploitation of an error.

Arg! I missed the glitch yesterday by just about half an hour! God, I would have bought atleast 20 or so games. Probably could of just opened up a whole lot of Gmail accounts and then bought some Visa giftcards. $400 worth of games for about $30 or so would of been sweet.

Who can forget all the Gamerush trade-in "deals" as well?

Turning a $10 or cheaper game into $24 worth of credit, back when GR had games worth buying, that was awesome... same with the trade 3 games get any used game for $5, when you could trade them total shit. I remember Gamestop ran a buy 2 get 1 free at the same time, so I got 3 $1.99 games at GS and traded them to Gamerush for a $44.99 used game.

I think I've gotten in on every major CAG deal here, even that SFA 3 for 99 cents from Gamefly ;)

Overstock had an actual sale a while ago where people were getting a lot of stuff for like 1.99. I remember having tons of things disappear from my cart on that one.

There was also a TRU clearance where you could use a coupon and get loads of games for free (mostly PS1 type stuff)

[quote name='neocisco']CC $5 clearance in 7/04 wins. That sale probably caused one of the biggest increases in site traffic as well.[/QUOTE]

Yeah I was going to go with that one. It wasn't a mistake and there were tons of good games on sale during that. Overstock's deal is better by far because you can't beat $1.40 shipped, but it was because of a glitch too.

If I rack my brain, I remember getting in on these...as you can see my brain doesn't go that far :p

--the Wal-Mart $15 360 HDD
--The EbGames trade 3 get $10 extra going on at the same time as TRU 90% off sale
--25% off Preplayed games at EB all the time :whistle2:( RIP old buddy
--8.98 CC sale
--Trade-in deals at EB around the PSP launch
--360 coupons from Best Buy
--PSP $5 off at best buy

I was a few months late for the $5 CC sale :bomb:

90% of those games on the CC 7/04 clearence sale were crap to mediocre though... I'd say any sale with a sizable discount that lets you pick from an entire store's stock easily beats out a limited selection where only 10% of the games are worth keeping and playing.

Alot of us have fond memories of that sale because it was CAG's first huge one, but the only fond memory I have of that sale is dumping 22 out of the 24 games I bought there at Gamestop during a Trade 3, Get an Extra $5 on each game promo that ran shortly after, because I made more than what I paid.

The CC $8.96 clearance sale this year had alot more bang for your buck, unless you were lucky enough to find Disgaea or MvC 2 at CC for $5.

I'm surprised more people aren't listing the $10 off Best Buy coupon, I wish they'd do another one of those, it made buying PSP / GBA / DS games very awesome.

QFT. That was the ultimate of all time. $5 MvC2 and $5 Disgaea.

The glitch at Circuit City where I could buy 2 games under 19.99 and get a 19.99 game free was pretty sick. I bought around 50 clearance games that were under 4.99 and got a ton of GH and PC games I didnt have.

Meh... I have a love-hate relationship with that coupon. I used it a good dozen times, but half of those games have since dropped to at most the after-coupon cost, and I haven't really given them much in the way of play time.

As a deal it was fantastic: just in January (last month of the three months it was active) I got Trauma Center, Metroid Prime Pinball, Lego Star Wars [price drop], Sonic Rush [price drop], M&L: Partners in Time, Mega Man X Collection [price drop], and the Castlevania Doublepack. Looks like previous purchases were PoP: Two Thrones [price drop], Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones [price drop], Lost in Blue [sold], Viewtiful Joe DS [price drop, now sold] and some others I can't recall or have probably sold since. All for $20 or $25.

For me the July 2004 CC sale is by far the best deal for me so far. I was able to get games like Disgaea and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for only $5 each among many others.

The $5 sale was way better than the $8.96 sale. Keep in mind that you would approximately get 2 $5 games for each $8.96. Not to mention the fact that there were a ton of games that became hard to find items. Disgaea, MvC2, Grandia Xtreme, Rez, Gitaroo man, Resident Evil 2,3, CV:X, Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance, Zone of Enders 2, Ikaruga, Dragon Warrior VII. This is in addition to the games that didn't become rare but were good games like Viewtiful Joe, Pikmin, Mario Party 4, Maximo, Onimusha 1+2, RE CV:X ps2, Devil May Cry, Shen Mue II, Wave Race. It also let some of us try some game would wouldn't pay for otherwise like Beach Spikers or DOAXBV.

+1

Between that and the original $4.99 CC sale, I drastically increased my game collection. Also the old TRU Green Tag sales at 90% off were very, very good to me

My vote goes to this one as well. Nothing beat running around Manhattan with other CAGs (hey Chesspieceface!) to multiple CCs. I came back with a huge bounty, and it was only for one system (Xbox). I can't imagine if I was also buying for the PS2 or GC. And just like the CC sale this summer, for some reason the clearance prices got put into the system early - I think the sale on the 3rd and 4th of July in 2004 (or was it 2003?) was a week or so early.

Second favorite was the TRU clearance last December. Sure the clearance price was $10 a game, but there were so many good games to choose from.

Free games are always good, but I don't usually consider price mistakes the same as a straight-up, old-fashioned clearance sale.

Unfortunately I could never vote a Circuit City sale as one of the best, because no Circuit City near me has ever had anything approaching a worthwhile selection of clearance games. I won't argue that they're probably amazing for some people, but they're always a "What the hell, might as well go there since it's next door" type of sale.

And I also put the $10 TRU clearance up there with the BB coupon, it was a crazy holiday season last year. RE4, Pikmin 2, FNR2, Metroid Prime 2, Golden Sun 2, Advance Wars 2; and that's just off the top of my head.

It's hard to say...it was a really good online deal.

Some other great deals I can think of:

The EbGames trade 2 get $10 extra going on at the same time as TRU 90% off sale

The TRU magic coupon deal. $5 off of games $19.99 and below. It was fun to look at the mile long receipts with one!

I thought the $5 Best Buy Clearance was pretty sweet too. Games like Wario Ware GBA for $5...yeah that was good.

Both the $5 and the $8.96 CC sales were fun as well.

For me it was getting a PM on the 360 hdd at CC for 14.99 w/ the sears ad. Missed the overstock 20 error. I did find a nice framed picture of Chuck Norris kicking someone at goodwill for 25 cents though. I don't know why but everybody laughs as soon as they see it .

I'm not sure if this is the best sale, since the question is subjective and based on people's perception of relative worth of the games on sale. But, I will say that this was the most versatile sale on CAG, since you could get a large amount off ANY product at overstock. I just wish it was known that the $50 link worked for anything. We would have gone nuts with that.

Scan. NOW. :bouncy:

Hmm....well the best deal i caught was a PSP Value pack and Harry Potter game for $160 shipped from Amazon/TRU. Then I returned Harry Potter to walmart for $30. PSP value pack for $130 was amazing, I love this thing. That was back in May i think and there were only a few available. Also just bought a premium 360 on Sunday from Microcenter in Columbus OH for $400 plus tax but there is a $100 rebate. The Circuit City 9.99 sale was good cuase I bought online the week before and pricematched so I got Metroid Prime 2, Jak3, and Ratchet & Clank Up Your Arsenal for $8.96. From the Overstock sale I got Shadow of the Colossus for $7.90 and Project Gotham Racing 3 for ~$9. WOW, I LOVE YOU CAG!!!!!!

seems most people are forgetting that

2 BIGGER SALES I GOT IN ON

2 buck Overstock game blowout Way back in Sept 04

and the BIG DADDY

10 bucks off any 2 games at TRU. Walking up with 30 games and getting them for less then 20 bucks Kicked major ass

ATL FREE from overstock (still got 10 copies lying around the house) anyone want to offer anything for them

the 3 for 15 deal at Gamecrazy. Tales of Dest 2 complete for 5 bucks

CC 4 of july sales 2004 and 2006 (2005 sucked)

Best buys LAbor day sale 2005 (hopefully best buy has a major sale this year)

There were a few About a year ago target had price mistakes on dvd box sets causing alot of them to ring up at 5.99. TRU had a coupon tho save 10 dollars off of 2 games under 19.99 at the same time they had either 70% or 90% off of some games.

Yeah ironically the reason I found CAG was because I was googling deals for PSP value packs and a thread from CAG showed up regarding the PSP Harry Potter Pack. God I killed myself that day many times over because I was too late.

I won't elaborate on aforementioned great sales (CC $8.96, Overstock 20%, TRU 90%...etc)

...but, the $5 BB coupon off any PS2/PSP game was a boon to me! I was tired of receiving dog-chewed PS2 cases in trades, so I stocked up on the $5 demos & Duel Masters for free!

In all, I used that coupon about 30 times before they caught on. :D I also got Rainbow Six 3 for FAR ($5-$5 pricegrabber rebate) and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect x3 for $5 a pop.

This ranks up in the top, but I'd have to say the old CC $4.99 and BB clearance sales of the old days were the two big ones that stick out in my mind, along with the 90% green tag + coupon sale.

The thing about the 90% off + coupon sale from TRU was so many people going to FYE for credit. If I remember right, Primal was basically free at TRU and flipped for around $20 in credit at FYE. Games were literally almost free, and many CAG's came away with 30 or 40 games for around $20. Go flip at FYE or EB (they had a trade in promotion at the time, extra $5 per title if you traded in 3) made the deal even better. Plus, if you traded at FYE and put it on a gift card, you could use it on their website for whatever you wanted. Many CAG's ended up getting 360's fully paid for on preorder through the flipping.

This deal was pretty sweet though.. and I'm kicking myself for not exploiting it more. If I'd known about the $50 coupon, I would have gone ape shit with it.

hmmmmm. . . . I'm the complete opposite. To each his own.

[quote name='Scorch']Dude that mentioned Hastings.. you realize that Hastings has the "4 for 1" deal running every single day, right?[/QUOTE]

The last time I went Hastings in Auburn, AL, about a month ago, they weren't doing the 4 for 1 anymore. This was for cd's, and the guy said it was for everything.

I scored pretty hardcore on the TRU summer clearance last year. Got a ton of good DC games, plus many other for other systems.

That's probably been my favorite CAG deal.

I also go with the original $5 CC sale. Getting Skies of Arcadia for $5 on the Gamecube was awesome.

Other good deals that I've gotten in on:

- FYE's $10 coupon error. Not everyone had their orders ship, but $2.15 DVD's are always a good thing.

- Gamerush's trade values and promotions when they were starting up. You could turn $12 into $30 credit with just one game rather easily. Those were the good ol' days.

- Toys R Us had a real good green tag sale around Christmas last year with games that were actually worthwhile.

- Overstock's price mistake for ATL ($0.00) and they actually shipped them.

My favorite CAG deal was Toys R US when they sent out those coupons for $10 off any two 2 games $20 or less. I remember carrying several large bags home filled with games, and I spent less than $50 each trip. The beauty of it was that the local TRU stores were restocking like crazy then, it seemed like every other day they had new markdowns and games under $5 on their shelf. Then there was the time last year when all of the green tag stuff was marked down to 0.00 and supposed to be destroyed (and then marked up to 0.1 later for whatever reason). That was fun, I saved 4 Perfect Darks from being destroyed.

I also got a bunch of psone games (about 50 of them ) .01 cent each at fye back in 04 but outside of noticeable titles like Baldies, they were mainly junky stuff I only bought just to collect.

Is there a chance that something like that TRU will happen again? I can't help but wonder because PS3 and Wii will be coming out and they need to get rid of all those PS2, Xbox, and GC games.
