was thinking IPod -- now thinking Wireless Satellite Radio

CAGiversary!
anybody have an opinion on how quickly this item (XM is supposedly putting out MyFi late this month) will see a price drop (expected launch retail is $350 from what i have read)?

You'll still have to pay for the monthly service, currently 9.99/mo. and 6.99 for the 2nd-5th units.

That MyFi kit is pretty neat, including the portable unit, car kit, home kit, etc. Totally all-inclusive. 350 is the MSRP. The SkyFi would run you about 260 for the unit, car kit, and home kit, and doesn't include portability, built in antenna, the built in rechargeable batteries, or the hard-drive thing.

I don't see the price dropping for at least 6-8 months after release, if that. XM has got the market share, that's a very cool product, and it will be in demand.
We've had two XM radios for about eight months, and love the heck out of them. If you really love *your* music library, then you can stick with the Ipod or something else [I used an MP3 CD player]. But even with as much stuff as I've got on CDR, I wanted something different, and every day on XM, I hear something I've never heard before. Right now, for instance, the Casualties are on Fungus, Dry Kill Logic on XLML, Hagans on Beyond Jazz, and a standup routine from Bill Scott on XM Comedy.
I get more use out of my XM radio than I do digital cable.

Satellite radio is going to be big, it just has to get past that 'Pay for radio?!?' thinking. You do pay for it, but the difference between satellite radio and terrestrial radio, in most markets, is as great as the difference between pay TV and 'free' tv.

It's definitely a personal decision based on your financial situation.
Not to peer pressure you, but do you buy CD's? How many? Cut down on one CD a month, and that covers your satellite radio. Go to Starbucks? Drink maxwell house instead twice a week, and you're set.
I've got a DVR as well [not a TiVo] through my cable co., and it has literally changed the way I watch tv. It's hard to watch 'live' tv anymore.

I am not a huge fan of an ongoing monthly fee, but a lot of dealers/services are going to that model. And unlike things like gyms, many of these things you can cancel anytime with no penalty.
I so want XM and Tivo but the damn monthly fees...I have too many fees as it is already
Tivo has a monthly fee?

Looks like TiVo is 12.95 a month direct.
If you cable co offers a dvr, it might be different [mine is 6.95/mo for the HD DVR.]
The only one that had no monthly fee was the DishPVR 501/508, which I don't think they're selling anymore [Coincidentally, I have one for sale.] They changed the name to 'DVR' and now charge the monthly fee.
Tivo also offers a 'product lifetime fee' of 299, but I might stay away from that.

Cutting down on a cup of coffee or a CD once a month is good in theory but very difficult in practice. Those are usually impulse buys so they are probably going to happen anyway and they are also irregular so it is had to just cut it out. There's something about getting that bill in the mail and having to write the check that makes it feel worse than it probably is.

Right now there is mortgage, car, insurance, electric, gas, cable TV, cable modem, cell phone, student loans, gym, train pass, subway pass, etc. and these are some of the fixed bills - I won't even get into the monthly credit card bill with all the food shopping and other assorted crap. $10 is not a lot of money for what is probably a great service but it's $10 too much for me...

i think i am going to go for the portable xm device, i may wait til after christmas on the hopes of a sale, my music library is virtually nil so i am much more inclined towards sat radio

Why decide between the two? You can get a free photo Ipod! I know these seem really gimmicky but believe me, I've seen a couple of my friends who signed for earlier free Ipods actually receive theirs in the mail. So now I'm finally giving into this and have signed up, click on my referral link and not only will you be helping out a fellow CAGer but also starting on your way to your own free photo Ipod!

tivo is 12.95 per month for the first unit and 6.95 per month for second etc. units (lifetime is 299)

i have a lifetime sub on my first tivo (bought in 2000, worth getting but an extended warranty is a must), on my second (which i will end up paying approx $70 for after rebate) i went with the reduced rate monthly

i have done a little more rsch on myfi and i am getting pretty psyched to try it out
