What are the measures of success here?

KingBroly

CAGiversary!
Going into this administration, whether people like Obama or not, they are hopeful he can turn things around (unlike the previous administration, people seemed to want his head on a platter from Day 1). So I'm just wondering what the measures of success are for this administration? Are they extremely high or extremely low?

I'm not quite sure, but it seems to me that although he set very high standards and goals for the administration, people's expectations seem relatively low except the economy, which is vaguely simple in itself: 'Fix this shit'.

So I'm posing the question here just to see what one group of people thinks the bar is at here.

Success = out of Iraq and Afghanistan within 4 years. Be more diplomatic and restore a little respect for America in the eyes of the world. If Obama can do that, I'll gladly suffer through his horrible economic policies.

1) Out of Iraq
2) Capture bin Laden in Afghanistan, or whomever is leading/organizing in his stead
3) 5% or lower unemployment by 2012, though that's a tall order. I'd settle for, but be less enthused with, 5-7%. This is based on an estimate that we'll hit 10% before the end of this year.
4) annual deficits down to, at *most*, $300B/year.
5) Rescind the Bush tax cuts, revise capital gains taxes considerably.
6) Institute compulsory rehabilitation programs for inmates.
7) Prosecute those in the Bush Administration responsible for the violations of the law you KNOW we'll find out about in the coming months. It's already happening now, with new revelations that reporters were being spied on during the Bush years.

If things go well ...
1.) Another fake Moon landing
2.) Another trumped up war
3.) Insolvency of US
4.) Everybody reduced to eating beans and rice OR rice and beans.
5.) Nonstop American Idol shows.
6.) HDTVs required to view any channels.
7.) Government controlling the Internet completely. Sorry, Cheapy D, your site isn't on the list.
8.) Millions of people disappearing.
9.) People wishing the future could be as good as Titor's.
10.) Repealing term limits for presidents.

...

When the bridge is out and half of the train has gone over the edge, even Superman can't stop it.

...

I'd like to think the random crazy people I read are wrong in addition to being crazy, but their economic predictions have converged with respectable economists.

Who are you guys kidding? The one and only measure of success that's ever mattered with any president, sadly, is poll numbers.

I have a strong feeling that Obama's will remain quite high regardless of what he does or what happens in this country.

IMO, it will be a success if there is no major terrorist act on US soil while he is in office. I also really don't want higher taxes but that's most likely coming.

Obama has a free pass. Anything that goes wrong, or continues to go wrong, under Obama will always be Bush's fault.

I do like how Obama's job plan has gone from "create" 2 million jobs to "create or save" 2-3 million jobs. So now Obama can call it a win if we don't don't create any new jobs, as long as we don't lose 3 million more jobs after his stimulus plan is put in place.

This isn't a game -- instead of conservatives waiting for him to screw up and liberals waiting to be saved, get off your ass and do your part.

Like what? I'm pretty busy.
Me too.
I don't think taking a sweat equity position in the US future is too much to ask, is it? I mean shit, we can all do better right? I don't see why asking for that suddenly becomes a debacle.

To Thrust and Billy, I'm curious what you would consider a successful presidency *OUTSIDE* of your political and policy view. I mean yea, rail all day about how you hate socialism/communism/someotherabsurdismthatdoesntdefinethetaskathand, but isn't there something that you can reasonably expect from the guy that you would be happy about? What can he do that he would be willing to do that you would be positive about?

I'm just curious.

Like I said before, and I wasn't joking, a "successful" president is really only one that's popular. That doesn't mean he's doing a good job, it just means he's popular.

What could Obama specifically do to make me happy?

Any one of the following-

- Any effort to destroy the Federal Reserve and/or completely recreate the monetary system outside of central bank influence.
- Complete overhaul of the IRS and tax code, if not complete abolishment of it.
- Apply the "bring the troops home now" to all military personal around the world.
- Significantly reduce illegal immigration (I don't care how), and streamline the legal immigration process to be easier, faster, and cheaper.
- Any efforts to neuter and ultimately destroy the U.N.

Or any two of the following-

- If I look at my pay stub and see less taxes being taken out of it than before he was in office (not due to inflation).
- Keeping Russian influence/expansion on it's neighbors in heavy check.
- Relaxing constraints on ALL types of energy exploration, creation, and inventing.
- Veto all attempts for another "stimulus package" for us, banks, or any industry.
- Any and all transfer of power from a Federal level to a local/individual level.
- Getting rid of the Dept of Education.
- Any substantial cuts or reduction in Federal government.
- Opposing the "Nationalizing" of anything.
- Enact policy that disallows government officials from heading or working in departments directly related to business/company's they were in before (FCC, FDA, etc).

There are more, but those are just off the top of my head.

Well, you kinda missed my point. I'm asking for things you could reasonably expect to actually happen outside of your political and policy positions and would be happy about. That whole first part of your post doesn't exactly fit the bill.

- Keeping Russian influence/expansion on it's neighbors in heavy check.
That's a reasonable one. Not sure I agree it's an issue, but ok.
- Relaxing constraints on ALL types of energy exploration, creation, and inventing.
Is that code for lease more public land to oil companies, or do you have something else in mind?
- Veto all attempts for another "stimulus package" for us, banks, or any industry.
Not exactly something that Obama would consider at this point if his comments are to be believed.
- Any and all transfer of power from a Federal level to a local/individual level.
Bonus points for thinking big, I guess.

Your military comment is curious. We ran into each other over Gitmo the other day, and now you're wanting a full pull back of all overseas personnel. I mean, can you justify that from a strategic standpoint? Is it purely/primarily a fiscal thing or what?

IMO tuition should remain the same or increase, but funding should also increase -- we shouldn't get more aid, the schools should. Good students in need can already get 100% tuition pretty easily, between federal grants and private scholarships. It's the schools that need help.

Maybe universities should focus on real degrees like Engineering instead of froo froo shit like Literature?

I heard a school here was in such dire straights that they had to cut a program. They cut the engineering program.

Wish i could remember which school it was, i couldn't believe it.
