2 GIGS of RAM?! GREAT SCOTT!

well, programs aren't going to need more than 2 gigs of ram until at least the end of 2005, perhaps mid 2006. Having that much ram means that you can run additional background apps with much less performance loss as well.

My main desktop / server is a dual xeon 2.4 ghz core step D1 OC'ed to go over 3 ghz each with Swifttech water cooling system. My main HD is a 36.7 GB Atlas 15K Ultra320. 2 gigs of RAM. I'm too lazy to write the rest :p

I have two back up computers. One 1 ghz P3 w/512 mb ram and a PII 333 w/320 mb ram running slackware. I have a couple of other computers too, but they are at my office, and I have a laptop.

eMachines etower 366c
366 mhz Cyrix MII processor
160 megs ram
3 gig hdd
cd drive works
dvd drive broken

I like solitaire!

HP Pavilion 512n
Celeron 1.4 GHz
256 MB ram
60 GB hard drive
60 GB 7200 rpm hard drive
CD-R/DVD drive

It may not be the sexiest PC on these boards, but for school it's fine, and it plays CC Red Alert 2 and Fallout just fine, and that's all that matters.

I'm looking to add a DVD burner and a video card somewhere down the line.
How do I figure out the specs on my computer?
Well, (in Windows 2000) you can try checking your system properties:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > General

That should tell you your operating system, how much RAM you have and your CPU type (assuming you or whoever built the computer set it up right)

The other information can be figured out by checking either the device manager or the beginning boot sequence when you turn on your computer. I believe the boot will tell you operating system, system RAM size, RAM type, video card (assuming no overclocking), CPU type and speed (again, assuming no OC). and sound card.

To find out what kind of IDE devices (hard drive, CDROM, DVDROM, etc.) you have, you must get into the setup view during the boot sequence... or you could just right click on the 'My Computer' icon on your desktop and click on Manage. On the window that pops up, go down to storage and then disk management. Right click on any of the bottom grey areas that say Disk 0 or Disk 1 or CDRom 1, etc. and it should go into further detail.

Hope the explanation wasn't too wordy or extraneous
