What do you think of $400. Neo-Geo games

hupp

CAGiversary!
Being a bunch of cheapasses I wanted to see what you guys thought of people buying a single game for 3 hundred dollars?

I've owned a Neo-Geo before and it was one of my favorite systems. I paid $200 for King of Fighters '98 and I think it was completely worth it. If somebody wants to pay $400 or $4000 for a game it's cool with me.

I've never owned a Neo-Geo and at the price of $100 or more for a game, most likely never. If I had the money, I would probably buy the games for this system, but most likely not own any other home console.

I don't know much about this system except that it was like an arcade machine that easily turned home console and that they were the best graphics during the time.
My impression of this system is like that of the PS3 being so powerful, but too expensive for a poor person like me. Using current consoles as comparison, what did the Neo-Geo system have to offer? Was it like the N64, while everyone else was enjoying NES?

There are tons of games that go for less than $20 now. Damn good ones too like Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury Special, early King of Fighters, couple of shooters, Baseball Stars, etc.

Sure, plenty of games cost a ton, but you can still have a great time with the console without spending much at all.

In the case of Neo Geo, you're paying for what are essentially arcade games. It was worth it back then, but now it depends on the game.

too much money for my tastes. I got a Neo-Geo CD system for these games. A lot cheaper method to play the 2D geo games. But the load times stink on this system.

I've been thinking about going the cheap method and get a mvs board. That is the actual Neo Geo arcade board. It's not as nice as an aes, but you can save a lot of money. Take a look at the difference in price between aes and mvs copies of metal slug games. There also is the option of buying an aes system and getting a mvs converter.

This is something I might do sometime, but I just don't have time for it now.

I had a 20 Gig PS3 after launch and got a 60 gig right after. I traded the 20 gig PS3 for a very clean MVS Cabinent complete with Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 4, and Fatal Fury Special. While the games have aged (in FFS' case, aged horribly) there is still nothing like playing a game on a arcade cabinent. I have Real Bout 2, Samurai Shodown IV, and World Heroes Prefect coming from ebay, all costing $10-$15 apiece before shipping. Its worth it if you have the cash, plays extremely well.

I'd much rather spend 400-600 on an old Neo Geo arcade cab w/ an MVS, the carts are usually much cheaper and its way more authentic.. I've wanted to own an MVS for awhile.

EDIT: Somthing like THIS would be NICE! (exactly what I'd want)

It is actually cheaper to buy a Neo Geo cabinet and find the games on ebay. I paid $300 for my cabinet and Metal Slug X. I bought KOF94 and Fatal Fury Special for $15 a piece on ebay.

It really depends on what you want. As others have said, there are different methods to play Neo as well as price, etc. If you go the AES route, there are also nice mods you can have added on like NeoBitz, light diode to the power switch to light up, etc. If you go MVS, you can try a consolized MVS or straight up cabinet. It's a choice. Myself, I have a modded AES and a nice standup cabinet, 3-slot. I've spent a good deal back on AES including getting the tough the find titles and a good number for MVS. Here is what I have amassed over the years:

There are plenty of options, just sort it out on cost and how much you can spend and room space.

could never drop that much on a game.

I'd rather just get a modded Xbox with a Neo Geo emulator or buy the collections for other systems.

Blackbear, that is what I have. I dont have as many games, but for under $600, I got a cabinet in a little better condition, a 4 slot MVS (that looks to be a 2 slot), a new 25 inch screen, new speakers, and 6 games, tons of replacement pies (buttons, joysticks, etc.). If your a SNK fan, its worth it.

The Neo-Geo was never intended to reach the mainstream mass market audience. It was for a limited group that had both the means and the interest.

Whether that is palatable to a group self-identified by its dislike of spending money is not a concern. A better question is whether they intend to charge proportionate amounts for Neo-Geo games running on the Wii Virtual Console.

I found Blazing star on mvs for 35 dollars and it is my favorite game.
Most of the games I bought were about 25 bucks. Last Blade, my second favorite game was 30 bucks.
I only spent more than 40 dollars on 2 games, Ninja Masters 60 bucks and superdodgeball kit new for 100 bucks.
The AES is a joke to me, but man it had a sick controller.
