Apple recently came out with a new ipod which is cheaper. Now I'm interested in one. :D So what do you guys think about the ipod? Mainly I want to know about how the battery life was, is it easily breakable, and did you think it was worth it spending all that money for it.
I think it is well designed but lacking features and sound quality. Then there's the price. No true CAG should pay for an ipod.
Do you have one?

Have had one for almost 2 years. Has become indispensible (sp?). Especially now, as I am just starting to use it for document transfer and digital photo storage (while on vacations). I have never had any problems with the sound quality, so i don't know what that is all about.

However, I have never owned a Microsoft based PC, only Macs, so I am a bit biased.

I have owned both pc and macs and a few different mp3 players by far the ipod is the best mp3 player, it does so much more then play music like asaraa said photos and document transfer as well as you can boot off of it. plus the design is great yes I will talk about the bad parts

the 3gen one battery charging was based on timing (2 hours a time) so you would have to charge it about 2-3 times to get a full charge.
The white skin is very scratch prone and a case is a must buy with the initial purchase.

very durable though even though they look fragile they are durabile like a mac truck my friend ipod has seen more damage then anything you can imagane and it runs fine.
Do they come in any other color besides white? I would prefer another color personally.
you could buy the ipod mini they come in

blue, pink, silver, gold, and green

they are only 4 gigs though

There are other players that are just as good as the iPod (Better in my opinion) and they are much cheaper. The Creative Labs players are perfect examples, lower price and excellent quality. I have nothing against the iPod but it just isn’t worth the premium the Apple charges for it.

Not personally, I've got a couple friends who have them so I have a bit of experience with them. I don't know about battery life though.

I don't need a million songs on mine. I got one for like 150 bucks that holds ~60 songs. It's all I need. I change it as often as it is needed.

For me it wouldn't be big enough. I have to have all my music with me cause I'm just sure that I'd want to listen to the one thing I don't have. I rip everything at 320 kbs, so that means a 60 gig drive is a minimum for me.

That's why I don't own a hdd player yet.

Seems like way too much for an Mp3 player. I use a Sony Hi Minidisc player. The 1 gig mini discs hold around 30-40 hours each.

Ipod rules.. yes not a cag item.. but make life enjoyable, those who bash it and dont own or never owned one... simply are ignorant.

Well, that statement is as fucking ignorant as they come. Some people know all the information needed to know about the iPod, and just don't need one with that much space, like me, or wouldn't like to pay out the ass.

I think ignorant is saying the iPod is "lacking features and sound quality" when you don't even own one, only messing around with your friend's.

I'd love to hear of some of the features it's lacking.

i have an mp3 player, but not an ipod.
archos 20 gig. cost $150 a year and a half ago. half the price of an ipod for pretty much the exact same thing.

I bought my girlfriend an Ipod for x-mas, nuttins happened to it except its frozen a couple of times no big deal (theres a reset button on it ) i personally think they are over expensive ,nice but to much (especially the Ipod minny) I own an Iriver Ihp-120 (20 gigs) very cool it has a lot of features that the ipod dosent have.

The two major things the iPod has going for it are size, and an excellent user interface. I've had a couple mp3 players in the past - one creative HD, and one Rio flash player. I also use my N-Gage as an mp3 player, and I used a PDA as a flash-based player for some time. Of all of those, the iPod is hands down the best.

The size is a huge factor for me - the Creative I had, the Nomad 2 LX, was about the size of a CD player, and had one of the worst user interfaces I could possibly imagine. All the flash players just didn't have the capacity to hold enough stuff.

There's a real paradigm shift, once all your music is on a thing the size of a tape deck - it makes you think about music differently, and how to use a music player. Now, there is only one device in my life that plays music, and that's the iPod. It goes to work, it goes in the car, it goes home. When I'm taking a shower, it's cranking out the tunes onto a boombox (well away from the shower, thank you).

There's a *huge* difference, to me, between constantly shifting out some music onto a flash player, and having the whole thing there. There was another huge difference between being able to conveniently carry it in my pocket, vs. carrying it around in my bag. And yet another huge difference being able to quickly access and organize my music.

Expensive, yes. Are the Nomad Zen or the new Rio HD players good alternatives? Sure. But the iPod is extremely convenient, very well designed, and perfectly suitable for everything I want it to be.

The Ipod sucks, and not because I'm cheap.

The whole point of listenting to music is to get the best sound.

So why get inferior sound?

Get an Iriver or a Creative Zen, they have the best sound out of all of them.

Two words:

RIO CARBON

Smaller than an Ipod Mini and longer battery life. Now, it has 5gb which is more than a Mini but less than a real Ipod. But having only 5gb versus 20gb or so makes sense once you see the size. This little thing is amazing and will take a dent out of the Ipod sales once everyone gets to check one out. Worth a look if you are looking for a new mp3 player but, by all means, keep your Ipod or Ipod Mini if you have one and are happy with it.

Funny, I thought the whole point of listening to music was entertainment. Silly me, I obviously must not be enjoying myself since I didn't get $300 headphones to get the best quality sound possible. If you want the best sound possible, what are you doing listening to MP3s anyway? It's a lossy compression algorithm (Even at 320kbs). You need to be listening to DVD-audio, through the most expensive pre-amp/amp combination, on $5000 speakers precisely placed in a sound-proofed room.

Me? I like my music portable, so I can drown out the sounds of construction as I take my walks. I have an iPod mini, and I enjoy the hack out of it. Decent battery life, great interface, and I love the ability to use it as a portable hard drive.

I fail to see how you can fill up a 40GB hard drive with sound files compressed with an mpeg-3 audio compression algorith.

Seriously.

Got mine as a present. I love it.

If anyone complains of bad sound it's likely the case that they don't know how to operate an ipod. Or a computer.

You can choose the bit rate you encode at. If you choose a low rate (I don't think you can go lower than 128 on an ipod...but why would you?) you'll get lesser sound. Choose a higher bit rate, get better sound. That's universal. Have a problem with the output? Get different headphones.

Bottom line, the ipod is a great mp3 player. Is it the best? I've never owned anything else so I can't say. But I like mine.

I'd like to bet that you've never personally listened to any one of these devices. But thanks for the cookie cutter advice that you taking from someone else's mouth.

The problem isn't the encoding or the headphones, it's the ipod's lower >90 dB SNR (4G). Compare that to the Zen's >97 dB and the Karma's >96 dB. The 140's has a rating of >90 dB but offers a much greater feature set than the ipod and roughly double the battery life from what I've found.

The bottom line is that even the Dell DJ is better than an ipod unless you're just in love with the design.

No, you spent it on a fashion statement when you could have had something better for half the cost.

I've had experience with two. One is bigger which I use to back up my data files and as a sort of system. That's 20 gigs.

I use the ipod mini for walking around and listening to music. The interface is probably the best you can get on the market, and the pre-set equalizer settings are pretty good and realistic. My only beef is that sometimes you can't see the whole band's name when searching for someone, so, when I listen to things like "Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter", dragon quarter isn't shown, show I'm like wtf which bof. But I fixed that by doing BOF: DQ.

The back light is great, and while people bitch about the battery...10 hours works for me. Even on long bus rides i've never had a problem, because you tend to not listen to 10 hours of straight music. If you use the back light all the time, drop the hour usage to 8.

The volume doesn't have that high of a max, but it's still great. (By max, i mean it doesn't make my ears bleed when i max it out). It's prolly cause i'm going def as it is.

It's a hard drive, so naturally you'll need it replaced eventually. I assume it will cost 50-100 dollars to have it done, but with what my friends have already spent on other mp3 players, I wouldn't really consider a hinderance. I have jogged with my ipod and it has never affected the hard drive. There is a 2 second loading time between songs, but that doesn't bug me. Depends on how impatient you are.

But I love it cosmetically and even its functionality. I've had experience with the dell digital juke box and prefer the ipod over it, especially because of the recent price drop.

"better" is subjective. Show me a 4GB (or better) MP3 player/harddrive with no moving parts, firewire support, and a Flash memory based storage mechanism for $125. That would be something better for half the cost in my book.

I really want something for my music, but I don't have the money for an ipod. So for all of you above that don't like ipods but have something else: what should I look into? Can you provide prices and websites to get them?

Nomad's are really cheap alternatives to dell digital jukebox's and ipods. In general, the 20 gb dell digital is around 2-3 hundred, so its almost like buying an ipod.

My brother had a nomad, so did my friend, was about 140 for 10 gigs of space, but it lasted about a year and a half, ran on batteries, and had somewhat of a cumbersome interface. But it would have been the mp3 player i would have bought had I not have gotten the ipod/dell digital.

Your best bet is to wait for a sale at a local store, or just to pay up front. It's rare for any of these suckers to go on a big sale. You might save 20-40 bucks, but that's chump change when it comes to mp3 players.

There are opinions and then there are facts, and the fact is that the ipod is overpriced and overmatched compared to it's competitors. If you love yours that's fine, but some people prefer quality to style.

Yeah, I was about to say myself...

While the ipod was expensive, they have dropped in price (especially previous generations). And there really is nothing that compares to it's design, interface, and quality except for the dell digital, which is a close second, and is the next best thing for the price.

The iPod is slowly being out paced by competetor products. Each new Player comes out with newer features and aims to cut the price just a little more.

Right now the thing that keeps them selling so well is name recognition and in a few months when portable video players start getting big they'll have to innovate or fall behind. Which means a the 3rd or forth new expesive device from them in under 4 years, which will errode cnsumer confidence.

The best they can hope to do at this point is drop the iPod Mini's price below anyother MP3 player on the market and try to get sales on the merits of it's size and affordability... oh wait Apple... affordability? so much for that plan.

I've been looking at the Creative Zen Touch. $245 for a 20gig player. Does anyone have any input on this player?

You've got to be kidding. At a high quality level it isn't difficult at all. I own about 800 audio CDs. At 320k for music and lower for other material such as spoken word it took a small fraction of that colelction to fill my 10 GB player. A 40 GB unit wouldn't hold more than a third of what I have on hand. Even using the prefereed WMA for smaller files at equivalent quality it still adds up.

My current player is a 10 GB D-Link Rock-it. No longer made and the size of a mass market paperback book but it has one massive advantage. It was free.
