What happened to the 1080i upscaling uproar?

The first few months of the PS3's launch there was much clamoring and uproar about the PS3's inability to scale games to 1080i by hardware...what has happened to the angry masses? I thought that this was a significant issue to those early adopters to the HDTV format. Yes, most HDTVs now don't have this issue...but for the early adopters to HDTV, this is significant. Just was wondering. Can anyone fill me in?

Right. Well to clear up what the issue was... It had to do with handshaking with the older TV's that are 420p/1080i only. With no 720P setting, the PS3 was kicking the owners' TV's down to 420p instead of up from 720P to 1080I.

I have a crt that only does 480p and 1080i. VF5 didn't have 720p listed on the box, but it worked in 1080i on my tv. I don't think oblivion works in 1080i though...I'll ave to check on that.

I don't own a PS3, but I do own an HDTV that doesn't support 720p so I'm interested in this as well.

Here's a quote from their 1.30 firmware update:
Selecting video output resolution has changed, allowing you to choose all the resolutions supported by the TV. The video will automatically be displayed at the maximum resolution possible, according to the following order: 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, Standard (NTSC).

I don't believe this fixes the issue though - my understanding of this means if a game supports 1080i, the TV will output that, but if it only supports 720p, it will still be downscaled to 480p. But like I said, I don't own a PS3 yet, so I can't test it.

Most of the newer games coming out will upscale (VF5, Sonic, NG:Sigma, some others). Should be all of them by now.

Older games will not.

Case closed.

It actually has nothing to do with handshaking. Some older TVs that were 480p/1080i only, will accept a 720p signal but will downscale it to 480p. Whereas other HDTVs will upscale the signal to 1080i.

And to answer the original question, it's up to the game makers to make sure that their game upscales properly. Unfortunately they have a very limited tool set to alllow them to do this. As far as already released games go (e.g. Resistance) there's about a 1% chance of the upscaling issue being fixed.

Well if they fix it going forward - and it also applies to all DLC - then I won't hesitate to buy one when I'm ready. There isn't a single game I'm interested in that's currently available (PS3 exclusive) so that shouldn't be an issue for me regarding getting to play older games.

I am one of these 'lucky' few with this problem. It really sucks that there has been no fix of it. Although, judging from recent games, either they all upscale, or they support 1080i as well. Either way, it's alright with me. The only game I have a problem with is Resistance.

The PS3's still displayed in 1080I though. I mentioned handshaking because the problem only occured when you went to launch the games/movies and that is when the display signals were changed.

The handshaking and upscaling issues are completely seperate. Resistance is a game that displays in 720p, the PS3 outputs the game at 720p and nothing else ('cept for 480p if you so choose). The PS3 simply can't output Resistance in 1080i, it's up for your TV to do that.

so how can you tell if your tv does the upscaling for you? I have a ps3 and I have a 32 inch phillips crt that I bought roughly a year and a half ago. I'm not sure everything is working up to par. The blu-rays I have played look just slightly better than dvd. It still looks good but my HD-DVD drive for the 360 definitely looks better.

I know my tv's native resolution is 1080i. On the ps3 should I have the display settings at 720p or 1080i. When I go 1080i all the text becomes way tiny and hard to read.

If you disabled 1080i, then your Blu-rays are only playing in 480p.

The issue that I was speaking of primarily and exclusively deals with PS3 games. Set your PS3 to 1080i, and the Blu-Ray will look better. As the post above wrote, you are probably watching your BR DVDs in 480p as it stands now.

And of course the text becomes tiny, you have a tiny, tiny HDTV. 32 inches is small.

So try the switch to the 1080i setting, and you'll notice the difference.

This news just made me buy an LCD HDTV that supports 720p (never owned a CRT one that doesn't support it). Glad I did though.

Meh, CRTs suck IMO since they take up too much room and are so freaking heavy.

Well size of TV and distance from TV while view play a role on how clear things on them in the different resolutions. So 32 inches isn't "small", you just need to be closer then larger HD TVs.

I don't think weight is an issue unless you are in college or something and have to move it every 5 months. My Sony KD-34XBR970 blows everything I've seen out of the water. I payed $800 and have never seen any fixed pixel display come close to the image quality I get for that price. My set also accepts 720p.

What about Motorstorm and bluray movies?...I have a 2year old hd set that has this issue and will also not buy a ps3 until I know for sure that this won't be an issue...

Thanks in advance for the info

I think I have a problem playing motorstorm as well. Not sure since I don't own it. I do have the demo though, and I think that is downscaled to 480p. The number of games with this issue seems to decrease as time goes on though. I think this will only be apparent with some launch window titles. I'm not sure how, but I think this problem has been pretty much resolved.

And blu-ray movies is the other way around, which is convenient for me. Blu-ray movies only play in 1080p or 1080i. So if your TV is like mine, blu-ray movies will be fine and will play in 1080i. They just don't work in 720p.

Final straw in getting rid of the 10 year old 4:3 1080i "hd ready" Toshiba.

Bought a 60" 1080p XSRD Sony and have been in love since.

Yeah I am thinking about buying one of the new Samsung slim fit LED DLP sets. Either 56" or 61". Once I do that the PS3 is a no brainer.
