What to do with an 60 gig PS3 with old firmware.

I currently own the old 60 gig PS3 with hardware backwards compatibility and the firmware still allows the "other OS" option. I'm not sure what I should do with it. I was thinking about selling it with those features and get a new slim PS3, but I don't think these are selling much now are they? My other option would be to just update the firmware so I can go online. I do not really play ps2 games that much even though I have a huge backlog, but I do have an old fat ps2 lying around somewhere.

So...what should I do citizens of cag?

I say sell it. It has backwards compatibility and the other OS feature which can definitely add value to it.

If you can get $200 then sell it. If only because it has a higher chance of failure and you'll either end up paying Sony $150 to fix it or buying a Slim anyway.

You could probably get a ton of money for it on eBay. But make sure you swap data to a PS3 Slim HDD before sending it out to a buyer.

I agree. Unless the otherOS option is of real value to you, I would go ahead and sell it. Backwards compatibility is a bit over-rated anyways. I have a BC PS3 but I have my PS2 hooked up to an older 4:3 television and I find most games look better that way.

yeah especially at this point theres so any great ps3 games out there now that you can get for cheap chances are youll never get around to playing ps2 games again anytime soon and if you still have a ps2 having a bc isnt that big of a deal. add to that how alot of he phay consoles are dying might as well get what you can now before its worthless.

Craigslist in my area those systems are going for about $250 - $300 bucks, and I also recommended ebay or another similar auction site like that chasethechuckwagon? site? -shrug- good luck

Its a shame SONY decided to "cash" in on the ability to sell old titles through the Online store. While i know the $5 extra it added to the original PS3's could add up with manufactering and they where already taking losses, taking it out so you had to buy the old games over was just bad. Now its PURE software to play those old titles, on the non bw compatible PS3's... yet they cant include that in an update? people who do it for fun have made emulators...I know they probebly cant do every PS2 and PS1 game.. but ...

Sorry the removal of the BWC was a pure dig for money and nothing else and it irks me.

I wouldnt sell it... My console shelf is already full, When and if (it will happen) i need to add another console... one less (ps2) will always help. but that is me.

But they sell OK it seems (i have tired to find one for an OK price and cant, but what i think is OK is ..well.. cheap) :)

What are you talking about? They haven't sold any BC games on the PSN. They have some PS1 games, but all PS3s can play those, it's PS2 games the non-BC can't play, and there is no PS2 games on the PS3.

Since Sony isn't actually selling PS2 games in the PSstore yet that's complete conjecture.

More likely is that hardware BC was a victim of the cost cutting necessary to push the ridiculously overengineered PS3 towards profitability.

I guess not as many people were willing to work extra hours to buy a PS3 as Sony had anticipated or hoped for.

Why sell it? It works, it's BC. What makes the slim so much better....It being smaller?
You're going to need to update firmware anyway to be able to play newly released games.

Upgrading your firmware does NOT remove the 60 gigs ability to play PS2 games. Dont know why you are thinking this.

I am going to sell my 60gb PS3 soon as well. It does get hot and the fan is loud, but it has never had YLOD or stopped working. I just shut it off after a couple hours to let it cool. I want the slim for its quietness and the fact I can run it a longer period of time than my 60gb. ( I am just being cautious with my 60gb even though its still running fine when it sounds like an older 360) I just want to find one of the 2101 PS3 slims before I commit to the new system and sell my old one.

???? Nobody said that....

There were a couple of reasons for selling it.
- Barely played it
- Chance of it YLOD
- Haven't played a PS2 game since 07 or 08
- Would like to go online
- Other OS option is of no value to me
- Pretty much wanted to get bank for the BC and Other OS option

By getting a slim from the proceeds of selling the 60 gig, the slim would be...
- Yes, smaller than the original
- Consuming less power (maybe cost efficient in the long run, but who knows)
- Having a bigger harddrive already so no need to buy another and installing

After looking at ebay and craigslist. They really aren't going for much, around $200-$300 like Vampire_Zio said. With a bundle, I'd prolly get $50-$100 more, but have nothing I would like to add. Pretty much trying to get a (decent) profit from selling it is pretty slim. The only auction I saw making more than the retail price 4 years ago was a bid or offer now price of $900.

I guess as of right now, I'm going to hold back on selling it since I really do not want to deal with ebay and ship the thing. Also, I heard some of my game data will not work on the new PS3 if I get one ( Capcom games).

Feel free to discuss some more guys, maybe someone's post might push me to sell it. ;)

I'm in the same situation. I'm hesitating to upgrade the firmware because I might want to sell it and get a slim. What other pro/cons does a slim have over the older fat ones? Doesn't it have less USB ports?

I might just post my PS3 up on craigslist for some ridiculous price ($500) and see if someone bites. I don't know how much longer I will be able to last without access to PSN though...

As for eBay, most of the people posting are getting $200-300, but by throwing the keyword "linux" in there maybe you can sell it for more?

Since you still have the functionality, might as well put Linux on there, just because you can!
