What's it worth? Valkyrie misprint Guide

Hello everyone,
I recently acquired 2 (two) Valkyrie Profile Strategy Guides with a more than obvious misprint to them. About halfway into the books (the same spot in both of them) they go from Valkyrie Profile guide to High School text book pages and then back again. So instead of pages like 96-128 of Valkyrie Profile Guides they're some High School textbook pages. I've never even seen anything like this before, so that's why I brought it up here. Perhaps someone could shed some light on this. Other than the OBVIOUS misprint they're in excellent shape.

Hopefully, someone knows so I can maybe turn this into a B/S/T ;).

They may be worth something but the trouble you have is that the *misprint* takes out a huge chunk of content that most fans would really want in there. If maybe one page was wacked or there was an upside down artwork or something, collectors would drool. But missing 30ish pages and having them replaced with a highschool textbook kinda sucks more than its cool.

how do you know they are misprints and not Knock off rip offs

If the guide wasn't worth much I'd say it would up the value. But, video games are really a full fledged collector community, as most still seem to want to use the stuff. You probably wouldn't get as much.

Just checking though, are the pages completely replaced by the textbook, or is there just extra pages there?

I wanna see pics of this!:D

And I think the value would most likey go down... as someone already said, if it was a page that was printed upsidedown or something, it'd shoot up in value. But instread, it's missing the real information so I'm guessing it will go down in value.

And it could indeed be a knock off.

And, just for reference, YES the pages are completely replaced by the said textbook. Completely strange, but this is NOT a knockoff...it's a Prima Guide through and through.

just cause it says Prima guide dont mean it cant be a knock off. I have no idea why someone would spend all that money making the knock off but they could... ALso I would guess it is a Knock off cause it would be werid that out of every guide Just these 2 had the problem... some college dude probally stone of of their mind making Rip off copies and got the two books mixxed up. : )

also i think it would destory the vaule of the book since the book is Damage (missing pages) Rare or not the book would still be considered damage goods

i remember back in the 90s i thought it would be cool to get people to sign the front of comic books just to find out even if is the dude who made the book the book they signed is now worthless cause its damage.... and nothing more funner buying a Autographic comic book on OVC for 35 bucks just to find it in the 5 buck rack at meijers 1 month later

That's one of the funniest (for a gamer) and oddest things I've ever seen.

Call Sotheby's!!

or maybe go on Xtreme Non-Antiques Roadshow and get it appraised.

I don't understand your reasoning at ALL.

I highly doubt that is a knockoff because of my source. I got the guides from a VERY GOOD friend of mine who owns a local videogame store (Video Game X-Change in Madison, Wisconsin). Lance (the owner) got these with all of his other Valkyrie Profile Prima Guides STRAIGHT from the factory. The were shipped with other Valkyrie Profile guides that didn't have said misprints.

Unless some "college student" infiltrated the company, bound in the SAME chapter of a textbook in EACH guide, and put them back in the shipment container, I believe your claim of a knockoff is unfounded.

Why is it soooooooo hard to believe that a company can have a printing error? It's not like PRIMA has some GIGANTIC printing press that they JUST make their own strategy guides on. Like most companies, they get printed as a subsidiary of a larger publisher. If you go to Prima Publishing's website it says Random House. If you remember anything about Random House from your wee tiddly-titkin days you'd know that they're one of the largest publishers of Middle School and High School textbooks and workbooks.

WOW, I just typed a lot

Its worth what somebody's willing to pay for it.
Like Scorch said - I'd try eBaying a a copy but I tend to agree with the other posters in the sense that its not a cool misprint - its basically like missing 30 pages. BUT if you list it as "OMFG -rarez/valuable guide!" some moron will probably shell out some $$ for it.

If you didn't mind your ebay rating taking a hit you could auction em reguarly and get like $60 apiece.

But... that would be unethical :) - of course, you could always argue the feedback against the person, saying they're crazy and making it up

who knows

I'd think they'd be worth more. People don't buy the guides because they need help for the game, they buy them because they are extremely hard to find. A misprint like this is even rarer. I'll suggest again to go to digitpress, you'd be amazed at what some variants/misprints fetch.

And I still want pics damnit

And when did your friend get these shipments? As far as I know, these guides have been OOP since the year Prima first started printing them.

if this is a well known misprint it would worth something. For example some misprint beanie babies will cost a lot on ebay. Now if there is a demand you could make a nice profit

Whoops - missed the pics until the Shrike edit. OP I think you have something here. DOn't worry if you can't understand slide's logic, very few can.

I posted a topic over at DP - we'll see what those guys think. If you ebay it, be sure to use gallery and bold and all that good stuff - half the $ you'll make is showmanship
Badass dude. You could be playing games and earning high school credit at the same time.
Okay, that was even funnier.

LOL The Government strikes again! Seems like they chose the easiest way to get to kids that abuse games.... Game guide turnarounds!

Lance got them when they were first being shipped years back. He's pretty outrageous on some items. He still has a CASE of Final Fantasy III Snes guides brand new (which is where I got mine for my collection ;).

I'd tend to agree. Authentic misprints and screwup like this tend to raise the value of things because people like odd and rare things. What makes this even more rare is that prima's quality control didn't catch this and destroy them. There could concievably been thousands like this created but destroyed and now there's only a handful left.

As far as people thinking this is a hoax. Do you know how expensive and difficult it would be to unbind and rebind a book like in this situation?

This kind of reminds me of some misprinted magic cards I had heard about a few years back. Instead of the usual backing they had another game's backing that was made by the same company, they were absolutely useless in the real game cause you need to have the same backings. That didn't stop the cards from being worth a fortune though.

Value of guide = $30-150. I base this on absolutely nothing but my opinion. People will buy it for the combination of rarity + weirdness.

im just saying It just seems werid that if they are REAL Misprints they would get the only 2 anyone has ever seen
Whyd Shrike edit the images?
I didn't edit the images, I replaced the full-sized images with thumbnails.

A tiny bit too large to be posted in a post, IMHO. So, I thumbnailed 'em.

Since you have 2, they can't be all that rare. My advise? Burn one, significantly upping the value of the other, then sell it.

I've got to bump this old thread. Does anyone know for sure that there are copies that do not have this misprint? Every copy I've seen (5) have it.
