White Knight Chronicles - $44.99

Thanks OP. When this game hits $30, I'll be all over it.

I originally thought this was going to be a day-one purchase, but after reading countless reviews, I've concluded that this title is extremely mediocre. I wonder if it sold well in Japan when it launched, what, like 2 years ago.

This game is definitely not mediocre; I think it is just a "love it or hate it" type of game. It got a 6.4 on metacritic with an 8.3 user score. Most of those reviews came in on day 1 or 2 of a game you can have fun with for months, and many of them didn't even play online. I would encourage folks who were looking forward to it (because it's your type of game) to pick it up. Of course, with the review scores, it shouldn't take too long to drop further.

Battle system for this game is simply not very good. Basically it lets you run around freely, but utilizes an active time system...have to wait until the circle fills up to attack. In addition, you have to run up to melee attack, but you can run back 20 feet and then some get meleed from a distance. So even though you can run around, it just seems pointless and gives you the feeling that you aren't in control at all.

If you can get past that, everything else is great. Beautiful game, fun story (nothing fancy, pretty much what you'd expect in a JRPG), lots of items/skills/customization, very fun to build your own georama town and quest online with others.

The main draw of the game is the online play. If you’re only looking for a single player JRPG, either pick up Final Fantasy XIII, Star Ocean, or wait until this hits $30.

If you want a MMO-like experience on your PS3, this game is worth the $45 they’re asking for it.

The quick price drops on this one make me think that an even heftier price decrease will occur in the upcoming weeks.

So, what you're saying is, one of the core elements of this game--the battle system--sucks, but we should cut the game some slack because of the items/skills and online questing? This argument sounds similar to those made by purchasers of American cars: "Well the engine is a piece of sh*t, but the car's comfy and it looks sharp, so I went ahead and bought one anyway."

Seriously?

Pass. I don't want this particular game to tarnish my opinion of an otherwise fantastic developer.

It would hardly be the first JRPG to get by with a mediocre battle system. I've played about 4 or 5 hours, and I agree with pretty much everything he said. The battle system isn't *bad* persay, it's just pretty bland and the UI is definitely sub-par. I don't think the game is worth full retail, but it's definitely fun for JRPG fans.

Something else of note: This is not a good game for trophy whoring, as there are 0 story progression trophies and I believe most of them require online to be obtained in a reasonable time (though you *can* get them offline)

Its kind of sad too b/c the game was hyped up initially and I still think its looks great, esp. the White Knight. I'm waiting for it to drop to $30 because I heard about the melee combat where enemies can hit you regardless of your distance. Very odd design decision. Plus I'm playing FF13 right now, which is only keeping me interested b/c of the battle system which is really good. The online "town building" looks fun in WKC. I wonder how many people will still be playing online in a few months, though.

No, what I'm saying is - here's the good and bad. If that sounds fun to you, buy it. You're welcome for the info.

If that battle system puts you off, you probably shouldn't buy it...considering that MOST of one's time in this type of game is spent in battle. No one is making you buy anything.

This is an understatement. I think plat typically runs 600-1000 hours. That's a lot of grind.

Sorry for the multi-posts, keep reading and replying before getting throught the whole thread.
Big fan of the Phantasy Star action games, how does WKC compare?
I think Brownjohn hit it pretty well. The draw of WKC is definitely the online play. Single player story in WKC is a lot shorter with a lot less to do. Both games have a rediculous amount of grinding if you are going for the plat. I think they're both worth a playthrough in their own right, but if you're looking for single-player I'd probably go with FF13 first, linear as it may be.

To me, the game just felt clunky and dated, even though it was released relatively recently in Japan (December 2008). Not to mention the non-existent single player story.
IMO, it felt more like a PS2 game, rather than a PS3 title. I'll probably buy it again at around $20 (traded mine in the same week).
