I usually don't start threads here, but this story was too good not to share:

Alvin Greene has been on the phone all day. That's to be expected for the guy who just won South Carolina's Democratic Senate primary and is facing incumbent Republican Jim DeMint in November. But everyone calling Greene has just been trying to find out who the heck he is — and one thing reporters learned Tuesday is that a criminal complaint was sworn out against him last year for allegedly showing obscene photos to a South Carolina college student and suggesting they go to her dorm room.
Greene, a 32-year-old unemployed military veteran who lives with his parents, defeated Vic Rawl on Tuesday for the Democratic Senate nomination despite having run essentially no public campaign — no events, no signs, no debates, no website, no fundraising.

ive always wondered if i could win some local office just by getting my name on the ballot. i have a hispanic last name, find the right county and race out here and my name alone should garner me a few votes.

No, this is what happens when you have open primaries. The other side can sway the vote towards a most ridiculous outcome, whenever their own primary is very safe and not close.

I dont know why people think its a mystery. Its a common occurence whenever a place has open primaries.

Agreed. There's no way an unemployed vet just happened to have the ten grand in disposable income he'd need to even enter the race. And he won by a 16 POINT MARGIN? No effing way.

It's an old trick in that neck of the woods: in the '90s, the Republicans coaxed an unemployed black fisherman into running in the Democratic primaries -- they were found out, prosecuted, and fined. Once the Feds show up with subpoenas for Green's bank records, I don't expect this to end any differently.

Too bad this may turn out to be a hoax like trq says, I kind of like the idea of people more like the rest of America being in Senate.

Rich elitists, high powered lawyers, and corporate shills aren't really working out for us lately.

With a $10,000 registration fee, who else do you expect to get in?

And then free games for CAGs everywhere.:bouncy:

Maybe CAG could organize and get us a rep in Congress. Imagine us getting involved in the political system and having our own honest to goodness bought out politician! Makes me feel like I'm part of the political process!

I love how disorganized the democratic party is that a person who spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on a campaign can't bet a guy just because his name is Greene. How silly is that? Voters just voted for Greene because he has a common african american last name for that area. However thought of this scheme is just brilliant. It's down right silly voters voted just based off a man's last name...Shame on them.

In any case, you can't hate the game, just hate the player. Both democrats and republicans pull such shitty ass tactics all throughout this country. It really shows you how fucked up our political system is.

Sounds like the Democrat politicians in SC aren't too bright either:
http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2010/jun/10/strange-twist-in-senate-race/

State Sen. Robert Ford, D-Charleston, who lost his gubernatorial bid Tuesday, said race could have played a role. The Democratic primary electorate is majority black, as is Greene, but not Rawl. "Vic Rawl had money, but he didn't have enough. He wasn't able to identify himself with black voters," Ford said. "No white folks have an 'e' on the end of Green. The blacks after they left the plantation couldn't spell, and they threw an 'e' on the end."

WTF?

Is it really more the disorginazation of the Democratic party or the massive stupidity of SC voters. I'm not arguing that the Democratic couldn't have done a better job here, but I think we all have to remember that we're talking about SC.

Seems like it is both really. Look at the link I posted. The Democratic politicians are just as stupid as the voters.
People still vote for democrats?
Well that was a primary.

But anyway, do democrats not hold the majority in the house, senate, and have the presidency? Or do you mean since like the past year and a half?
Any thoughts?
Yeah, I have a thought...

"Wow."

Also, it would have been interesting if Olbermann had actually asked Greene about anything relative to actually holding the office. Viewpoints on various issues, etc.

Good point. They wanted to expose this guy as an idiot, which they clearly did, but it would've been fun to at least get his political take on a couple of issues.

I think Greene has a mental illness.

Bill Frist is on Bill Maher tonight. Maybe he can diagnose Greene by examining the taped interview with Olbermann? Wouldn't be the first time...
Here's Keith Olbermann interviewing the SC Democratic Candidate.

LOL God help the electorate if I ever ran for any office. First day of the campaign, I'd go get copies made of anything that might be embarassing or campaign ending, slap them on the desks at each of the news outlets in this area and say 'here's every piece of dirt on me, now ya don't have anything you can find later on'.

Then I'd run the campaign saying I'm just as big a crook as the rest of them, vote for me. Plain and simple. I don't think the voters would be able to grasp the blunt honesty approach.

"How dare he get past our $10,400 road block that should have prevented the average citizen from representing average folks. I guess we'll have to raise the price of admission so us aristocrats can maintain our stranglehold."

I really think he's just your average, uneducated dude who has never articulated his views before, and is now doing so on national TV and radio.

Put any of us on primetime national TV tomorrow night, and I think we'd all suck it up, too. I've seen/listened to four or five of his interviews, and the more interviews he does, the more comfortable he sounds.

I'd support him over DeMint because of his two most discussed positions: voluntary reunification of Korea, and legalization of marijuana. It's not like DeMint isn't an asshat statist, I wouldn't lose sleep over him getting booted from the Senate.

Last but not least, he is a Jedi master politician. Alvin Greene for Senate!

Uneducated? He doesn't appear to be too knowledgeable on the political front, certainly, but he is a college graduate.

This is the most interesting political story in a long time.
