Who was "the" artist of the 90s?

When I say "the" I mean when people look back in 20 years and remember a certain artist the most. Like during the 50's (I think) it's Elvis. 60's Beatles. 80's Madonna, etc
That's why I think the 90's was weak. Too much music was "disposable" (commercial). This even affected bands that frowned upon that sort of thing. No one is going to listen to "Oops I Did it Again" 20 years from now. There are few if any songs from the 90's that have the staying power of a "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Loving You", "September", "Isn't She Lovely", or "Fly Like an Eagle" (for example).
Better than the 80s at least.
While nowhere near in comparison to the 60's and 70's, I shaq-fuing loved the 80's. :D
I hate almost all music made between The Wall and Surfer Rosa.

The Cure is the only 80s band that I actually listen to, off the top of my head.

I love the 80's mainly for one group...

De La Soul

Theirs was the only tape I wore out and had to buy a new one. Three Feet High and Rising was a brilliant album.

Yo, man, both of these guys died before the decade ended. I think Dr. Dre is the artist of the 90s. (And I have a soft spot for Pearl Jam, thought they've fallen off considerably since Vitalogy)
As for the new millenium, Motley Crue reunion tour next year, baby!!! (God, I'm getting old. )

I'd have to go with my favorite band, Stone Temple Pilots. They had more top 10 singles in the 90s than any other artist. 13 I do believe.

Nirvana definately with Radiohead second.

Look at it this way... I've come to the conclusion that today's pop is just continuation of Rock from the 80's. Except it ignores the grunge movement and Nirvana.

In the states we had Nirvana and the whole seattle rock movement. But in other parts of the world, the Grunge movement never took hold. So while Grunge and harder metal had a huge influence on american music, the rest of the world, especially Asia, continued in the pop progression of the 80's.

That turned into the corporate grown bands in Asia. The Asian pop groups. Then the Spice Girls as that movement headed back west copying the asian movement. Then the movement brought us American Idol, Brittney Spears, N-synch and Justin Timberlake, etc. Their form of pop, which does generally suck, completely ignores the grunge movement. It's like listening to a modern interpretation of 80's music.

So you have to say Nirvana had the most influence, followed by the grunge movement in general. with STP, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam. In Europe, that movement was better embodied by Radiohead. Of course Radiohead is different from pearl Jam. But in Europe they've had the same influential impact.

Finally, while the other Grunge groups have their each individual strengths, Nirvana comes out on top. Not just because of the quality of the music, but because it can be argued that no group has been as powerful a live performer as Nirvana. I know a lot of kids who don't understand what made Nirvana. They listen to their albums, and they know their groundbraking, but they don't understand what puts it over the top.

Well, first, Nirvana was first. They've heard other more contemporary artists and they don't understand how groundbreaking Nirvana was. "Rape Me" is a song that frankly, STP, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden couldn't come up with. (Even though I would argue that "Black" by Pearl Jam is the best song of the 90's.)

But more importantly, Nirvana was one of the most powerful live acts in the history of rock. They would stun audiences regularly. Krist Novoselic knocked himself unconscious on stage at the end of a set live on MTV! You try to describe a live perfromance of Nirvana when they were at the top of their game to someone who never saw Nirvana live and they just don't understand. Even television, like the unplugged set or when they were live on SNL and MTV doesn't do it justice. And when you were watching those in your living room you knew you were seeing something special. You just knew it.

the 80s was the best decade for everything ever.

if i had a time machine id go back to 1977, and when 1987 rolled around, right back to 77.

you can only take rage so seriously, i mean, an activist band on a major label? its just hard to believe them 100% when bands like choking victim were doing way better stuff then them.

What better way to get the word out and be able to fund some of their causes. But, I here what your saying.
They put on on a pretty intense show though.
Most 90's music does suck(as do most other 90's things), I prefer the 80's all the way. However, I enjoyed bands such as Pearl Jam, STP, SP, and Green Day.

I would be first in line to take that time machine back to the 80's, for sure.

Some great RATM song's - Killing in the Name of, Take the Power Back, Bullet in the Head.

Pennywise and Sublime are a couple of other bands that should be recognized for the 90's.
