I just picked up Nanostray for the DS-L and it got me thinking I love shmups and need more so I check around and only found one that is announced for next year with dragons and planes or something like that. So am I going crazy or is there schmups that I am missing out on?

There are some pretty good shooters for the GBA. You might like Metal Slug Advance, Gunstar Super Heroes, and Astroboy. I know that there are more traditional shooters, but I can't remember their names.

I am currently looking for Metal Slug Advance but it is hard to find for a good price. Astroboy and Gunstar looks good too.
The GBA has Iridion 2, as well as iterations of Gradius and R-Type.
Iridion 2 looks great. Yeah it seems that the GBA has some good shooters and I wish that the DS-L would continue that tradition.

If you're thinking of R-Type 3, apparently that port was butchered, I never tried it myself though.

I had Gradius Galaxies, didn't like it as much as the others in the series... good news is that it's only $4.99 used at GS. Same with Metal Slug Advance... didn't like it either, but I also didn't like the Metal Slugs for NGPC (which is has more in common with.

Astro Boy is a sidescroller beatemup more then a shooter.

Portables really haven't had a wealth of shmups that I can think of.
Sorry but thats the gayest thing Ive ever heard in gaming.
Wait wait lemmeguess...your first game was Halo? Besides...everyone knows Tingle is the gayest thing in gaming

agreed with the OP, we need shumups. vertical and horizontal...

Unfortunately, that's pretty true.

I want to see more Japanese shmups on the DS. Nanostray was alright (fun rankings), but it screamed of non-japanese developers trying really hard to model their game after other japanese shmups. It sure missed a lot of key things, but fun none-the-less.

Also, Nanostray had a terrible launch due to Majesco's financial troubles. It was quite the rare game to find at launch. I remember hearing word that EB/GS would never officially carry them.

Some neat things could be done with those two screens for shmups. But things look bleak...
That term has been around forever. http://www.classicgaming.com/shmups/
WHat is trhe reason for him asking a question using a very uncommon slang word for shooters? Yes, this word is uncommon, no matter if it is in some internet database.

If he is seeking information that is useful to him in his search, and is asking the general public, why would he not just use simple language to ask it in the clearest way possible?

Maybe he is trying to be "uber" by using that term, but the lad still needs to see that he is only hurting himslef by being so unclear with his question. Self-owned as it were. Pay more attention in school, son!
That term has been around forever. http://www.classicgaming.com/shmups/
Dude, seriously, use simple phrases, and commonly used words, if you are requesting information from the general public. It will save you a lot of grief. And common does not include an internet dictionary.

Shmup is a pretty common phrase and is usually used as the name of the genre in the gaming community... this is CheapAssGamer isn't it? Heaven forbid that there's a couple gamers out there who don't know what he's talking about, because anyone who would care or know the answer knows what's he's talking about.
Sorry but thats the gayest thing Ive ever heard in gaming.
Well, they were called "Shooters" - that is before 1st person shooters...

It's common in gaming circles though so it's not unreasonable to use the term. Do most people know what "FPS" or "MMORPG" or "Survival Horror" mean? Probably not but anyone who's ever picked up a controller should know - same thing with "shmup" - it's just another genre and totally common.
Yes, this word is uncommon, no matter if it is in some internet database.
The term shmup is used throughout the gaming community, not just "some internet database."

Indeed, "shmup" is a good deal more explicit nowadays than "shooter." Some poor kids might think Halo, or Quake, or the like are "shooters."

I've been a "SHoot-eM-UP" or SHMUPS fan since I was born (Early 70's), I've "Shot the core!" more times than I can probably count to, and have used the term "SHUMPS" on and off for at least the past 15 years (Since around the Genesis era). Its no more "Gay" than saying RPG for Role-Playing-Game or FPS for First-Person-Shooter.

Don't diss on something you do not understand, especially when it involves my favorite genre.

Nanostray sucks BTW, horrible shooter that people get suckered into for its beauty. Mechanically its broken, and once again I wish these companies would realize VERTICAL SHOOTERS DO NOT WORK ON HORIZONTAL SCREENS. And before someone "Corrects" me by naming something like Giga Wing or Mars Matrix...They suck as well. :D

Oh and Quake, Halo et al are NOT classified as SHMUPS, and by doing so would be considered heresy as you cannot catagorize them along side Gradius, DonPach, Blazing Star etc.

Haha, that was my point. I'd go even further to say that Halo, Quake, etc. aren't shooters either. They're FPS games. To me, "shooter" is synonymous with "shmup." i.e., Gradius, DoDonPachi, Ikaruga, etc.

Nice post. What are some of your favorite arcade Shmups? I'm always looking for something new to try out. I just discovered Don Don Pachi and I love it...
Raid Over the River is in development and looks very interesting.:)
Scurge: Hive also looks like it could be a great game...if it ever gets released, that is. It was supposed to have been released around October of last year and it keeps getting pushed back. Now they're saying that it won't come out until after July. We'll see.
Sorry but thats the gayest thing Ive ever heard in gaming.
this is the worst thing I have ever read on this board.

Do Don Pachi is actually the sequel to Don Pachi so I suggest looking into it...Both are truly fantastic games. Gradius Gaiden PSX is another wonderful game and arguably the best of that series (Gradius Collection for PSP just came out and its the crowning jewel).

Although not technically a scrolling SHMUP, Cosmo Gang Video is awesome.

golden eye is okay first person shooter and worms open warfare is great uh yea im goning to play it now

Might be a classic term, but i bet not even half the people on this board knows that a schmup is, including me. But I think 90% of them will know what an FPS game is.

You know what is sad? I bet there are tons of people on this board who don't know what a shump is. Because they are spending too long trying to level up all the people in their party and finding some uber weapon so they can beat some end boss using one attack.

You want to see why shumps kick ass ? look at this.

yeah, I get it. I know it sounds like im bashing on "shmups", but im not. Just saying it like how i see it.

I think there a tons of people that that play schmups that dont know what the word means. Not until they read threads like these.

I love this internet debate on the use and meaning of shmup. It is just classic. I swear, people let this thread explode. We need this thread to spill onto GameFAQs for the laugharity! :D

As far as modern (32-bit+) shmups go, most people will tell you to get

(Do)DonPachi
Batsugun
Battle Garegga
Radiant Silvergun
Ikaruga
Psyvariar Revision

I also really like (some "purists" will disagree)

Layer Section aka Galactic Attack
Border Down
Hyper Duel
Soukyugorentai (Otokuyo) aka Terra Diver
Cotton 2/Cotton Boomerang
Homura

most of these are japan-only saturn games. some are quite expensive, but a few can be had for 10-20 bucks on ebay. a saturn with an import cart shouldn't run much more than 55. if you had 125 or so to spend, you could probably get the machine, Galactic Attack, Batsugun, Donpachi, and Soukyugorentai. of course, that doesn't include a joystick....you can find adapters at liksang.com for ps2->saturn. please don't upset the shooting gods and try to play these games with a pad.

if you are looking for some domestic Playstation 2-compatible releases, try:

Thunder Force V
Raystorm / Raycrisis
Gradius III/IV/V
R-Type Delta/Final
Strikers 1945 (actually, this is Strikers 1945 II, but not labeled as such on the US release)
Castle of Skikigami 1 & 2 (in US, a version of CS1 is known as Mobile Light Force 2)
Gunbird (in US, known as Mobile Light Force)

the nice thing about going with these is, half of them are 10 or 15 bucks these days, and the others shouldn't cost more than 25 or 30. the Mobile Light Force games have butchered sound and most story elements removed, but the gameplay is identical to the original versions AFAIK.

additionally, i believe (Do)Donpachi, Batsugun and Battle Garegga (and maybe Hyper Duel and Terra Diver) are playable via MAME......although once you get hooked on Garegga, you will want to pick up the saturn version due to the various enhancements included :p there are a bunch of other good MAME-playable shmups too....check out www.shmups.com for reviews and more recommendations.
