Why did Konami have to ruin the US version of DDR Extreme?

So the game just came out today and already it sounds like there are a lot of problems.

In the Max games, you need 93% of Dance Points to get an AA, so even if you missed steps, you still got an AA if you got a lot of perfects. In DDR Extreme, no full combo=no AA

Jumps only count as 1 step toward the combo (not a major problem but that was something that was done away with after 5th mix so why is it back?)

As expected a lot of arcade Extreme songs are missing but why are Konami original songs like Bag and Sakura not there (unless they are really late unlocks)?

And the problem that could possibly ruin the game. No Dance Play settings! On the dance pad, you know the X and O buttons in the corner? Since the PS1 games, you had the option for those panels not to function during the song so if you step on those spots accidently, it wouldn't count as a missted step and ruin your combo. With Extreme US, that feature isn't there but it supposedly isn't a problem if you have the Konami pad because it automatically turns off the panels during the song or something. Of course, for everyone who already has a 3rd party pad (including all metal pads) this will be a problem.

I was undecided about the game but I'm really not sure if I want to get it now. As much as I want to play songs like There You'll Be (left out of the import of Max 2 so this is the first time it's in a home DDR game), I just can't see spending $40 on this mix with these issues.

Thanks for the info a bit, I was thinking of buying DDR Extreme, but then again I could always try and wait till it's ever cheaper or wait till I have any extra cash around. But from waiting awhiles for Extreme after MAX2 I was hoping it be more positive.

Also where you did heard all your information from?

Yeah, that's annoying.

I'm actually fine with this, since it bothers me whenever i skip from 99-101 combo making me miss the "ONE HUNDERED COMBO!!"

Bag is officially not in the mix, I heard. Sakura MAY be an unlockable. I'm praying that it is, since I love that song.

Actually, that's in the options. Look a little more.

Oh...you don't actually have the game yet. But you can really turn off the shape buttons as arrows. Here's my first impressions of the game. Not sure if you'll agree or not, just my opinion.

pros:

- i love .59
- move your feet by junior senior was a cool surprise, challenging steps
- the new paranoia is by far the hardest paranoia on USA mixes
- nice to see drop out on this mix, good challenging song
- tsugaru's back
- 321 stars is fun
- i love love love sugar

cons:

- captain jack's back
- i hate do me by moustache men
- more american songs than i would like.

I'll give more input as I play it more. I've only played A-Ps so far.

*edit* I also heard that Cartoon Heroes is officially not on the list, which sucks.

I'm a complete lameass when it comes to DDR but being friends with people that were into it for a long time I do understand a couple of things about it:

1. Konami has no idea how to handle a US version of DDR (possibly because japanese arcade games are always easier than the US versions which means they probably make quick difficulty adjustments at the last minute).

2. A lot of the Japanese songs apparently run into licencing problems (or more like "it's going to cost HOW MUCH? ... uh, just use Captain Jack again...") The market is smaller for the game here dispite the seemingly rabidness of it's fans so they arnt as willing to spend the money.

Where in the options menu is the option for dance play settings? Everyone on DDR Freak (and people on IGN's DDR board) said the Dance Play options is missing so I figured it was but maybe it's hidden well so no one saw it.

I expected the game to be missing a lot of the Dancemania songs like Cartoon Heroes but I see no reason why the Konami Original songs were left out since they don't cost Konami to licenseing (spelling?) of course.

You might not be able to find it for that much cheaper than the MSRP since DDR games tend to hold their value and even Max still sells for $30 and it's 2 years old.

I got all of the info from the giant thread in DDR Freak.
is dream a dream back?? anymore background videos to go along with the song like ddrmax2
No, but Only You is in the game from Captain Jack. There are background videos I belive but I'm not sure which ones exactly

Sorry for the late response, but I kept forgetting to check options when I played. It seems like you're right though. I mistook the "Double Mode" setting for Dance Play one.

My pros and cons:

Pros:

New songs.
Eyetoy enhanced (haven't checked that part out yet, though)
Got the bundle, so now I don't have to buy a PS2 pad or get the Max bundles... can just get the games by themselves now. Duh.

Cons:

Some songs are on DDR Ultramix. Buying DDR Extreme kind of eliminates any reason to buy most DDR song packs from Xbox Live.
NO STEP RADAR. WHAT THE HELL?
Like a Virgin (Madonna)
Believe (Cher)
Waiting For Tonight (Jennifer Lopez)
8-[ Males really play this game?
Yes, yes they do. And this male actually likes the Captain. I would love to see the All Captain Jack Mix. I'd pick it up in a heartbeat.

I've got the new mix, but I've only spent a little bit of time with it, so I can't really comment. I'm still feeling MAX2 as my favorite American mix, and from what I've seen so far, Extreme isn't going to be changing my mind anytime soon.

Granted I haven't played any of the Japanese versions, so I really don't know what songs I'm missing, but out of all the US released DDRs (the only one I don't have is Disney Mix), this is one of the best. I really like the song list (Never Ending Story?!? HELL fuckING YEAH) for the most part (but some stuff is crap *COUGH* MADONNA *COUGH*) and the Eyetoy inclusions are fun and give me a great new way to make an ass of myself in front of my friends.

Check it out. You'll like it.

Licencing sucks. biggest reason why the US releases lack so much from the imported versions. I have the JAP Max 2 and i see a huge difference in the lists. oh well..we will what Ultramix 2 has to offer.

heh they shouldve added in
Max period in the extreme version. that woulda been cool.

Ultramix 2 is going to have a lot of Dancemania licsenses. Already confirmed is Moonlight Shadow, Vol 4., Flash Dance and probably the big name licesnse Dam Darriam.

I guess they are making up for Ultramix 1 have no Dancemania songs.

Konami neds to make a deal with an online music store to let people buy songs of their own choosing. This could be done fairly well on Xbox. Then perhaps there would be a range of music that wouldn't make me change the station if it came up in my car.

Well it is EXTREEEEEEEEEME!!!! Is a can of Surge or perhaps Ballz also included with the game?

Despite all its faults, I can't help but love this mix for YMCA and the Mission Mode. So glorious and sometimes head-poundingly difficult.

I've unlocked all the songs. Here's my 2nd impressions.

pros:

- absolute is fun
- the challenge version of higher has fun stream
- tsugaru (apple mix) has an interesting beginning, and i like the song more than the original
- A is easily one of my new favorite songs
- frozen ray makes you spin
- V is also easily one of my new favorites
- i love how A and V have both heavy and challenge steps.
- maximizer is actually fun
- legend of max is HARD. now being the only song i can't beat at home, it gives me a new challenge.

cons:

- another wild rush? i like it more than the original, but still...
- the 2nd drop out isn't as fun as the first
- i wish that sakura, cartoon heroes, bag, waka laka, tobira, love shine, and a few others were in it.

V is a great song, the first time I played it, I thought it sounded familar, then I realized it was the same classical song used in Pump It Up's song Winter.

I think the problem Extreme lacks so many of those other songs is because of Ultramix.

Love Shine is going to be in Ultramix 2 and I wouldn't be surprised if Bag and Sakura end up in the game as well. That way Konami forces people to buy Ultramix 2 as well. They did the same thing Ultramix 1 where the US version of Max 2 didn't have Sweet Sweet Love Magic or Candy Heart but they were put in Ultramix 1.

cher? wow thats lame...i dont care about the "problems" really i just care about the songs sucking, max2 had its share oof crap, sounds like this one will too...

dude this is a video game website...we're all nerds, but not all of us are sexists...

Konami made a lot of shitty errors in this mix, thus I didn't pick it up. However, my friend did and we're working on some things. Apparently there's another song on the disc, I forget what it is at this moment, but they didn't include it, it is unlockable through a codebreaker code. Also, someone apparently hacked a save file which auto sets it for dance pad settings, I think it's over at ddrfreak? Not too sure, just what I heard. All in all, it was poor programming and not enough songs for me to be able to buy it.. Of course... I do have Stepmania X on my Xbox, with over 500 songs :E

I was looking at this game today while grabbing my extra conga set. The game seems to lack good songs but the official pad is enticing. I already own the original US DDR, Disney Mix, Konamix, and Max so I have choices in music. I just need to figure out if the official pad makes the purchase worthwhile.
