why does everyone love COD so much?

CAGiversary!
This isn't a hate thread, or it isn't intended to be a hate thread, it's my opinion and I want to hear the opinions of others. I want to this to stay civil and no "COD IS WURST GME EVA!!!" hate etc etc. that being said;

I've recently got into system gaming again, I've been into mmo's for a while. I started playing some of the great games like assassins creed, mass effect and bioshock just to name a few.

Now I've played call of duty since the first modern warfare. and I've never been good at it. I've played mw2 and blops, not thinking either two were anything special or drastically different than its predecessor.

But whenever I try and talk about games with anyone they only talk about call of duty and swear it's the best game ever, I try and recommend other games to them but they just say that those games are crappy and can't compare to call of duty. Not to mention the fact that whenever I look at my friends list everyone except 1 person is always playing black ops.

Have I not played call of duty enough to see what everyone else does or am I playing wrong or something? I mean the story for the game doesn't really appeal to me, it just confuses me and the multy player get's repetitive after a few weeks for me. Whenever I try and ask my friends what's so great about it they just say something like because COD is the best, it just confuses me.

so basicly, what I'm asking is why does everyone see call of duty as such an amazing game and refuse to try anything else, again i'm not saying call of duty is a bad series by any stretch and i still do play it on occasions.

I like the the for the competition from its online multiplayer. If you take away the name and just judge COD game by game, feature by feature, and evaluate each games online performance, I don't think it'd rate the high. The most popular product, isn't always the best product.

the hidden truth behind the thread! how did you catch on so fast?!

Call of Duty is popular because it's rewarding to every player. This is for several reasons, all of which make modern CoD games brilliant in a sense:

1. It's easy. Real easy. There is no recoil, you have a large variety of tools to help you get around common challenges that existed in older FPSs, and a bunch of fancy toys to kill people with in a very easy fashion. Getting kills in an online FPS is what every gamer wants -- you make an FPS where even the bad players are having their moments of glory, you make lots of money.

2. Sense of reward. Not only can you kill people easily, but you're also rewarded for it constantly. Shit pops up in your face about every other second in that game. Points, kill streaks, death streaks, unlocks, rank ups, achievements, etc... There is nothing you can do in CoD that won't make you feel like a winner somehow.

3. Competition. The game is easy so naturally, everyone thinks they are good at it. They are having a blast, delusional or not.

Really, all they have to do is release new perks and maps, and they can make people keep spending $100 a year on it.

4 player split-screen - I don't see how E.A. plans to take the crown away when they fail to recognize this.

Silky smooth framerate - You don't notice until it's gone in other shooters.

I don't think COD is that amazing of a game, it's just what my friends play, so I play it. Personally, I wish Valve would fix the 360 version of TF2 and we could play that, but since that won't happen, we play Black Ops. We have Reach too, but nobody wants to play it.

I don't understand why 4 player split-screen is a selling point.

Nintendo 64 nostalgia?

You pretty much nailed it. This, and the fact that it's the only shooter at 60 FPS on consoles is the reason why it's so popular.

'Cause... those games are the only ones people play when friends are over...

I've always played first person shooters, and I didn't start playing CoD until Modern Warfare came out (I've always been a Halo nerd). I think the thing that makes me play Call of Duty time and time again is the fact that it's visually striking and, at least to me, the leveling is addictive (I think there's crack in it). I mean why else would people, including myself, continue to prestige?

I've never been a big CoD fan myself. Granted, I've only got into the series this generation, but it's not bad. For example, I love Nazi Zombies and the single player isn't bad either. But the multiplayer, I am absolutely terrible. Part of this I think (for CoD 4 at least), is because of my play style. I've always been the person who likes to get in close with a shotgun or an assault rifle and just blast my opponent away while it seems like the game was more tailored for sniping (at least the maps I played on). A friend of mine told me that Black Ops is more suited for Close Range combat, but haven't really tried it online. Is this true at all? If so, may have to give CoD another try.

But really, I think it seems like everyone loves CoD just as it's the more popular and longer running series. But any series has it's fanboys. For some it's CoD, for me and some of my close friends it's Halo, for one of the GSTLs at work it's Gears of War.

I've always been more of a run n gun or spray n pray player myself, but I've found myself adapting to the more recent FPS games where a little bit of marksmanship goes a long way.

Even on Uncharted and Uncharted 2, I found myself trying to take my time while crouched behind cover to line up a head shot versus just running out from cover guns ablaze just hoping I hit something.

Mind you, some games I still just play like that(GTA series) and/or I've changed my tactics to those of a suicide bomber where I'll just prime/cook a grenade or stick a sticky bomb on my car and go full throttle at enemies and blow myself and them up.;) Of course, having helicopters in those games helps too, since I can just power dive in one and chop people up with the blades.:applause:

I agree about adapting with the times. Halo 2 (iirc), I wouldn't touch the battle rifle with a 40 point pole, but I love using the DMR in Halo: Reach. And while I used to be exclusively Rumble Pit, I now find myself doing a lot more Team Swat, even if I'm by myself. Still can't use a sniper rifle to save my ass though.

I pretty much hate all FPS games, and those are some pretty compelling reasons that could make any game awesome.

It just seems like since COD2 they set prefrence.

Its what people know (or think they know) and feel comfortable with.

I play with friends all over and half of them i hear "man i hate this game" but on it everyday.

They took already addictive FPS online multiplayer gameplay and added RPG level progression and unlock systems to it, and made sure the game had a silky smooth frame rate and great controls.

Best COD analysis I have read so far.

I have fun playing most games in the series. Campaigns are short, but usually good. Online is fun.

As someone else noted, it's pretty simple and easy to play with out a lot of recoil etc.

I'm a casual gamer, always have been. I'm not into games that take a lot of practice and skill or have much of a learning curve. Free time is a precious thing. If I can't pick up a game and have it all figured out in 5-10 minutes and sit back and veg out and have fun, then I'm not going to play that game.

As someone else noted, the leveling system and unlocking guns and other things can be kind of addictive as it gives you something to work toward. I get bored with online games quick if there's nothing to work toward and it's playing just to play. I'm goal oriented and need something to be working toward. So I can't get into online games that have no goals, don't like dicking around in sandbox games etc.

The campaigns are cinematic and exciting and they give you a wide variety of things to do to keep you entertained.

Multiplayer, on the other hand, is mostly full of overly-competitive, game-ruining assholes and is therefore no fun unless you specifically play with your friends, which you shoudn't have to do every time you want a friendly game.

Call of Duty, to me, is a prime example of a decent game that's overrated to hell and marred by its own fanbase.

I play it with my friends online. Talk shit and have fun with people I havent seen in years (Air Force buddies)..thats the big selling point....we talk about what new games we are going to get and generally try to get the same multiplayer games when they come out.

I've never played a console COD, and haven't touched the series since COD 2 on PC (when I worked at a PC gaming hub), but that pretty much describes every multiplayer game in existence. It's amazing how many idiots talk trash over headset, force you to watch replays of their unimpressive moves, or hold the screen on the box score for thirty seconds at a time while playing NBA 2k11 online. Not to mention the pause-send-PSN-message nonsense.

I have a response set up for them:

"video games"

The Asperger rage that follows is priceless.

This. It's hardly my favorite game series or anything (I tend to prefer third person shooters and RPGs anyway) and I'm completely uninterested in the multiplayer, but you have to admit that the campaigns in the series are impeccably produced, highly polished, very cinematic, and just generally a blast to play.

i dunno i played waw for a bit , mostly because of the zombie coop ) and its ok but i got bored after a while since more times than not games consisted of people camping you get shot once or twice and then you die, respawn and repeat.

i like the sp in fps games way more than i do the mp and for me the best mp experience can be found in u2. i used to love the mp in gta4 until i played u2 mp then i realized how slow , clunky and dated gta4s mp is.

if you took the shooting/ movement mechanics of uncharted 2 and placed them in a world like gta4s youd have a hell of a mp experience. if they had put mp in just cause 2 i gaurantee alot of people would still be playing it.

 There were just as many campers in the Uncharted 2 mp, which is why I stopped playing that very quickly. Not to mention the no lifers who played it 24/7 and could pick you off with a couple shots from seemingly across the map.

Aside from glitchers in GTA IV and Episodes(who you can avoid easily anyway:razz:) the mp is still fun to me, so much so that I play it virtually every night.

I totally agree with you on Just Cause 2 though. I could only imagine parasailing around the game world with friends. But they would definitely need to fix the controls for planes before I'd really consider playing it. I couldn't even tell you how many times I ended up slamming a jet into the ground/water because of the wonky controls.:whistle2:#
