Why does Nintendo shun Punchout?

There hasn't been a new Punchout since the SNES.

They haven't put it out in the Classic NES GBA series yet.

They pretty much don't acknowledge its existance.

Yet its one of the best NES games ever. Why does Nintendo treat Punchout as that relative that nobody likes to talk about? It seems like it would be a no-brainer money maker. Has there ever been any official word on anything Punchout from Nintendo?

EDIT: Has anybody recently seen Wade Hixton's Counter Punch at TRU B&M?

Seems liek a no-brainer to me too. A new Punch Out with the old ones as unlockables would sell like hotcakes.

Punch Out as part of the Classic NES series would be an excellent idea. They should let you save between each fight and you end up with a perfect pick up and play game.

Heck they could probably do a little coding and create a head to head link mode. That could be cool.

They would never want to be re-associated with Mike Tyson these days.. therefore they will not release the original Tyson's Punchout. And I do believe there are much better games that have yet to see a GBA classic release.

Punchout is a good timekiller, nothing more, nothing less. I'd like to see a true Final Fantasy port, not the one in Dawn of Souls.. a 100% port.

I'd also like to see Roger Rabbit get revived.. as well as Snake Rattle and Roll, some Battletoads games.. hell, just release a 'best of' NES cart, throw 40 games on there or so, charge 49.99, make it a 10 part series, and call it a day.

I'd rather have Super Punch-Out!! than Punch-Out!! if they were to release one of them... The time trials in Super Punch-Out were great. You could beat just about anyone in 10 seconds if you knew what to do...

I disagree completely. They don't have to put out the Mike Tyson version... the re-release would work fine and while there may be games you consider more epic and important to the history of gaming that have yet to be released under the "classics" series, I promise you this title would outsell them all. It's format and style of play is perfect for the "pick up and play" quick fix nature of the GBA. Even if they refused to release the first one, I think the SNES game (which somehow managed to be more amazing than the first) would make a great DS title (Stats, health and/or an image of your fighter's body reflecting the damage he's taken... stuff like that).

Fact of the matter is Nintendo has completely ignored a franchise that is ripe for a return. People are always talking about how titles like Pikimin, Paper Mario 2 and Donkey Konga are great games but don't appeal to widespread audiences... Punchout would and in the process would serve to remind Nintendo that there IS a market for first party arcade style sports gaming that doesn't include mario in the title.

I think they'd really have something if they made a new one and focused on character quantity. If they kept the gameplay mechanics in their simple (yet effective) form, they could keep the replay value high by having over 100 characters to face. If I were a talented programmer, I'd make a MUGEN that utilized the Punchout Engine.

They changed it later after his rape conviction, they replaced Tyson with Mr. Dream. They could release that.

Nintendo doesn't care because it's not big in Japan.

Two games that if they continue the GB classics line that I would like to see in the next lineup are Kid Icarus and Super Punch Out. I, myself, enjoyed Super Punch Out more than the original. Also Earthbound needs to be released again here.
Punchout is an NES game that you can find in AC, can't you?
You can't get it through normal gameplay, and you can't say a Universal Code to nook for it. I think it was a rare E-Reader unlockable.

I for one, would actually buy Punch-Out if it was re-released for the GBA. I'm not too big on the whole "classic series" but this is one game that I believe seriously needs to be given another chance. Anytime I fire up the NES I have to at least get a few rounds in.

I somehwat follow Tyson...

He was contacted a few months back and I even posted it.

I am unsure if it was EA or Nintendo but I think it was Ea that contacted him...

Something could come of it in the future... or he missed the boat and coulda/woulda have been in fight night 2?

I am not sure but figured I would give the bit of info i knew from Mikes standpoint.

Punch King is almost identical to Punch out minus Tyson , plus some cool new characters. And it was cheap, I got it for less than $10 a couple of years ago for the GBA.

I bet its a port of punch out.

"Why does Nintendo shun Punchout?"

Because Nintendo thinks it knows what we want and is too busy telling us what we want. There is no punchout for the same reason there was no Metroitd for how many years.

Nah, I played Punch King. It wasn't very good, in my opinion. And it wasn't released by Nintendo, either.

I got it from a CodeGen code, which I got from GameFAQs' AC trading board. You can just post your info and you'll get a code for it and some other games. They worked fine for me, and they should for you or anyone else that wants them. I can post a link to the board if you want. They're all generally nice guys there, unlike the rest of the site.

There was a code released through the European official AC site that unlocked Punch Out. I don't have the link, but I think I found that link somewhere on these forums...

There were 2 seperate versions of Punch Out!! released, one with MT, one without.

What are these "much better" games? Because I can only name 1 game (Castlevania 3) that I'd want a GBA port of more than PO!!.

Actually you can "legally" get it by decorating your room a certain way (something about red stuff only in one corner). I remember spending 2 whole weeks trying to unlock it, then I gave up and bout an AR :)
Kid Icarus and Earthbound (to a lesser extent) are neglected as well.
Indeed, how dare they cancel earthbound 64, I like nintendo but some of there decisions are fucked up to say the least.
Kid Icarus is more neglected IMO but punchout is more fun.
Man that's the first thing I thought when I saw this topic. Punch-out was great, but Kid Icarus, there was a game that did quite well and yet Nintendo didn't even make an snes version. Of course Nintendo is best known for two things: Mario, and the failure to use common logic, resulting in heavy financial losses.

about the reason nintendo took tyson out of it

I remember a while back Nintendo commented on it and said that the contract was up for them and they did not want to renew it since tyson was not the champion anymore. What I am trying to say is that the liscence to use tyson in the game was running out by time that the rerelease was planned and Nintendo did not want to waste the money to resign tyson since he was defeated.

Hmm... not bad, I'd have preferred a version that had no vocals, but still worth the dl'd.

I also caught a Metroid comment in there, as Nintendo foolishly left Metroid off the N64, and now look how well the GC Metroid games are selling. Ugh... why Nintendo does some of the things that it does is beyond me, it truly is.

I hated Super Punch Out. I pre-ordered it and bought it the day it was released. I took it home, loaded it up and made it to the first Bruiser my very first time playing it, with no continues. Needless to say, I was really disappointed. That was the only time I played it. I took it back to Babbage's the next day.

The game is insanely easy. The characters are boring. The voices are absolutely horrible.

By contrast, Super Punch-Out!! is one of my favorite SNES games. I'll admit it isn't terribly difficult, but it's still damn fun.

It's all about the time trials though....

also remember that today a game that has those stereotypes today wouldnt fly.

Im not going to list what they are to aviod an arguement but play the game and look at the countries each character is from.
